Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

It looks like a WCIB or WCIG from 1978-79 as it has no shading and it shows the agitator under the water level knob (I think the previous model, WIB from 1976-78 didn't show an agitator on it's control panel).

Nope it's a WIA. Imperial. Not Custom Imperial. The Custom Imperials had an 8 position fabrics selector, three agitation speeds and a full width fluorescent light backsplash. This one has only six settings,no light,no window and two agitation and spin speeds.

Chuck,

With the introduction of the WEG Elite model, the Custom Imperial was downgraded to what used to be the WIA and WIB. The Imperial (WIG) name was downgraded to what used to be the Custom Deluxe (WCD) model (with a single kob for the 4 wash/rinse temperature selections, a separate speed knob and no 6 position fabric selector).

While the early 1970's 1-18 washers with a water level knob usually show a pictogram of an agitator next to the water level knob, the mid seventies models like the WIA and the WIB didn't show one. The later models did again.

And after 1976, even the TOL models didn't have 3 speeds. The Custom Imperial from 1977-78 was the WIC-A (it replaced the 1975 WCI and the similar 1976 WIC) and it still had the lighted panel, the 8 position fabric selector and the pre-wash/extended soak and extra rinse features but no 3 speed motor and no "Hand Washable" selection (it was replaced by a second "Delicate" position). The Elite which replaced the Custom Imperial also had only two speeds.

Frigidaire 1-18

So, I just purchased this machine. I will be driving over to pick it up soon. My question is, Can I lay the washer down on it's side or back to transport it in a mini-van or must I have it standing to transport?

Your advise is greatly appreciated!

If the washer works as well as the seller says, I want to do the sound reduction techniques I read about earlier in the spring.

Congrats!

I picked up a 73 GM Frigidaire washer this winter and am very happy with the vigorous washing and rinsing it still provides. They are fantastic machines. As for transporting, I'll defer to others. I think we kept mine upright during transport but it was only a 30 minute trip.

Congrats Brainard!

I never laid one of these on the side to transport them but since they don't have a gearcase with oil in them, if you do, it shouldn't leak oil!

Keep us posted about the machine. I'm curious to see more details about it. I think it should have the pan-type lint filter rather than the earlier bed-of-nails...

Congratulations Brainard!  I think you're going enjoy having this washer (especially the spray-rinse...).

And, just in case you wondered, that KA portable that you helped me out with will be moving to our new home in August - thank you again for all your help!

transport on it's side

is fine, we did it with the 1-18 that Phil found us last fall in Queensbury NY, we stuck into a SAAB 9-3 wagon, so it HAD go go on it's side. No oil = no problems!

Have fun, they're great machines!

Thank you

Thanks, everyone. I feel much more confident now. Someone else suggested that I get some "Noodles" used in the Swimming Pool to put around the outer tub just to stabilize it while transporting, which I will do.

Also, if the 1-18 in Chattanooga is still available when I go there at the end of the month I am going to grab that one, too!

Test Run

I put the 1-18 through a test run outside this morning while drinking a cup of coffee. Surprised at how well it ran. Very smooth and very surprisingly quiet and no leaks? I will run a load later this afternoon to test drive for real!
