Pics later...BUT I GOT IT!

A 36 inch Kenmore with a griddle..The lady that had it bought it new in 60 when she married, they moved in 64 into a new house that had gas, so the Kenmore has been in the finished basement for 50 years, the Daughter said her mother used it to bake wedding cakes in, and make pancakes on Sunday morning, it needs a good cleaning, but is in really great shape for 54 years old.I will clean it up good and post pictures..

Well!

I just got thru SCOURING the griddle...Now on to the stove, Its really clean except around the griddle and underneath the units...greasy! and to make it harder to clean, she put foil under the units, whic of course got stuck down with grease, so, bit by bit, im scraping it off..underneath is nice real porcelain!

1960 KM Electric Range

How cool to see this style range again, my Aunt had the 30" version of this range, when they bought their house in Chevy Chase Md in 1959 it had a Chambers Gas range in the kitchen and my Aunt being a great cook and avid homemaker had that old gas range ripped immediately in favor of a modern electric range.

Only problem was that even though that range cooked up countless great meals it was a piece of junk that Aunt Margret hated with a passion. When her oldest Son bought his first house and needed and electric range to replace the gas range the house came with she gave him her range and I found her a used 1967 30" Frigidaire Electra-Clean range which she loved from the day we installed it.

It is really neat to see this range again, I though it was very tastefully styled, hope yours works better that Aunt Margret's, Hans call me if you want the details on what to look out for.

It has one feature..

Ive never seen before, and I bet would be difficult to find...plug in surface units with 4 connections...7 position heat controls..which I much prefer over infinite. They are Chromalox units, and unlike the junk sold today, they have very substantial contacts ,instead of just a loop of wire as todays stuff has.

I always wanted a Kenmore..

Just because I have great memories of my Great ant and her Daughter, who both used them, I know most guys here dont like them, but this one was in such good shape I couldnt resist!

Hans, sounds very cool... please post photos, the craigslist post is already removed! Does this replace the Frigidaire... or are you starting up a larger collection? Remember to save room for your new Caloric oven and Thermador cooktop!

I think..

Im going to use the Kenmore a while...I like the Radiantubes on the Frigidaire...but not much else, its pretty, but not practical, any utensil used on the rear units has to be small or it cant be centered on the unit, even then, the overhanging light causes steam to roll over the glass panel, making a mess, and like most of those old infinite heat switches, you are constantly fiddling with it to keep a steady heat...I think Ron will get this one back ,or I will try to store it for him..

1960 KM Electric Range

Four Terminal Plug In Surface Elements were not used all that long but they did work well, I agree that the 7 heat cooking was a little more flexible than GEs 5 heat elements.

There were actually a lot of good features on this Roper built Sears range, but a few problems with Sears service and an oven door that never closed properly and top burners that were not level led my Aunt to really hate this range.

I remember that after this range was in her sons house in Silver Spring Md. and he had moved to NY, they rented the house, and the new tenant was complaining about the ovens cooking performance. Well my Aunt was floored when I ran a service call and found the ovens temperature was right on the money, but without top heat in the oven it still was not a great baking oven.

Well....I have a hard head!!!

You are probably right on all accounts, the only real problems I have encountered so far are, the oven light was wired with regular wire, so all the insulation burned off and it will also need a new porcelain socket, one wire to the broiler was burned off at the terminal, I fixed that, and the flourescent light wouldnt burn, ill get to that, I never understood why top heat was that important...gas ranges dont have it and they bake ok,but I know you know more about it than me...I judge all ovens by the Norge, rusty liner and all, it baked as even as any I have ever used..here is a picture after cleaning, one chip at the left fron edge, but other than that it looks pretty good.

Its odd...but

Some things are better on this range than any I ever saw....and then, you say..What on earth were they thinking!???The best storage drawer arrangement I have ever seen...first the drawer is painted white, so you can see in it, then it slides on regular ball bearing drawer slides!!

Congratulations! Your efforts in the clean-up department paid off. We had a mid-1960s thirty-six inch electric range for many years. Loved the small left oven and used it quite often. I see the designers at Sears carried the taller control panels of the '60 Lady Kenmore laundry pair into the range line, as well.
