For the longest time, I've been using Tide He powder in my frontload machines (I now own a Duet HT). However, I'd like to go to something more environmentally friendly. Does Ecover make a He powder, and if so, does anyone have experience with it-is it any good? What about other brands?

I believe all Ecover laundry products are designed for use in European machines, such as compact front-loaders, thus they are low sudsing. I have a box of Ecover powder, and it works okay, but not great. It's fine for everyday lightly soiled laundry, but needs a boost on stains and whites. I really like Seventh Generation powder. It contains oxygen bleach, and has so far cleaned everything I've thrown at it.

Try Country Save powdered non-chlorine bleach if you can find it in your area. It's an oxygen bleach, and it works great on whites. It should only take 1/8 to 1/4 cup in a Duet-type machine, depending on load size and soil level.

If you have a Whole Foods or Wild Oats they carry Ecover and such. I use the Ecover dishwasher detergent and get very good results. The Laundry detergent isnt that great I think. the softener from ecover is good and leaves a fresh scent.

Sudsman, I buy the Country Save bleach at Whole Foods. Their website, countrysave.com, has a store finder function that might help you locate a retailer in your area.
I've also used Country Save laundry powder with good results. I have a sneaking hunch it's the same detergent that Trader Joe's sells under their "Next To Godliness" label. Perhaps I'll do some sleuthing....

Although I can't say that I have ever used it. I am a Persil/SA-8 guy myself. I sometimes will put a small scoop of the oxy clean that i get at Cosco in with the load( the one with the scoop that grows each time I open a new box) funny thing. There is another soap that I have seen alot of here in Portland, and that one is Bio clean. That stuff is used by sevral people that I know, and they seem to love it. They make it accross the bridge in my hometown, Vancouver. .One suggestion would be that .you could go to Wild oats and get a little of the BIO clean in bulk and try it and see if you like it before buying an entire box. Just a thought

I've got a bottle of Bi-O-Kleen liquid (original version, although I see they now have Cold Water and Fragrance Free formulas). The directions say to use 1 oz. per load, which seems like a tiny amount once diluted in 20 gallons of water in a top loader. I wonder if it would be more effective in front loaders using only a few gallons of water? I haven't tried mine yet, but it was only $7 on sale at Fred Meyer, so I guess it's no loss if it's icky pants.

It worked fine on my business clothes, no problems. So, it shouldn't be bad for most of your laundry.
I found that it did fall down on heavy soil and in cooler temperatures in my top loader; maybe adding it to a low water HE wash would help it out. It's not terribly sudsy from what I can remember.
