Also, what is the best way to bypass the lid switch on machine like this one?

Jon the best way is to take off both wires from the switch, strip off the ends and join them together with a wire nut. This way you retain that wonderful orginal ***click*** when you open and close the lid without having the nasty effect of the ***click***.

I kind of figured that's what I would have to do and that's an easy fix. Does your Filter-Flo have a lid switch? I don't recall yours "clicking" when the lid was opened and closed. I probably wasn't paying attention either. You have so many distractions in that basement! :-)

No the '58 does not, I'm pretty sure GE didn't start with a lid switch until at least '60, if not '61.
