Got some cooking oddities today...

A friend in my hometown re modeled his kitchen and I got the vintage Jenn Air cook top, all the units are in line and the cover over the burners has slots at the top that are the vents.Also a odd wall oven, a 16 inch Suburbanette with a extra separate broiler in the bottom, both are stainless, I will post pictures when I get them cleaned up.I think they are both 1960 models.

I remember those early JennAir cooktops from ads in high end shelter magazines like House Beautiful.

You know what I remember from House Beautiful? That article in 1960 stating that because Americans love their cars so much, that the wave of the future was to have a living room where the car would rest. They had a photo of a living room with an enormous Lincoln parked alongside the living room furniture! The only outgrowth of that, that I remember, is that show 'Vegas' on TV where the guy parked his car in some sort of a warehouse with his furniture.

JennAir cookers-remember folks had a love-hate relationship to those-either they liked them or hated them-sometimes you would see one on the curb!At this point I can cook on anything.Basically the range or stove is a heat source for cooking-heat is heat!From various apartment homes-to my folks homes-got used to cooking with gas or electric.Either is fine for me!-just so long it heats my food!

When "future" arrived, it showed how Americans love so much their stoves that now they rest right next to the sofa with those horrible open concept kitchens from hell.

I like my open concept kitchen/hearth room, but a sofa close to the cooking? never.
Ours is French country themed, with a craftsman style twist. The hearth room is for dining with the fireplace, and the kitchen a step up with a center island.
When the weather is fine, we can open the in swing patio door, and enjoy eating in or out on the patio.

I've seen that Lincoln picture.  Our '64 Continental convertible slept in the garage where it belonged, and on warm-to-hot days after taking it out for a spin we had to leave the garage door open for quite a while afterward or it would have turned into an oven.   Parking in the living room would have been better suited to fall and winter.

 

I agree with Thomas.  Open concept designs with an island cook top a few feet from the couch are pretty ridiculous.

We're not the tidiest of people.. I don't want to see the kitchen except when I'm in it, nor do I want others to  LOL.
