I heard about this recently and just tried it today. It works. To make grilled cheese in the toaster:

Toast slices of bread. Add cheese. Place bread with cheese on top and start toast cycle until cheese is melted.

My grandmother told me she did this and I didn't see how it would work, but it does. Of course the crumbs may fall onto the countertop or top of toaster, but I was surprised it made a pretty good sandwich and faster than with a pan and no cleanup.

I'm unclear what you're saying.. Place bread with cheese on top and start toast cycle?  Are you saying after you've toasted the two slices of break, make the sandwich with the cheese between the two slices and then lay it on top of a pop up toaster and run a cycle..?

Exactly. With the bread already toasted, putting the sandwich with the cheese on top will melt it.

Might be a haphazard way of doing it but worked for me. And the sandwich was crisp and not soggy like pan toasting with nonstick spray or butter would cause.

We had a GE waffle iron / grill for making them when I was a kid and I got one for myself not long after moving out on my own.. I've never made a grilled cheese sandwich in a  pan. Seems like an odd way of doing it to me.

I used to do as posted above about making it in the microwave, but to me this method tastes more like the real thing.

And I agree toaster oven would be easier. I don't have one but my grandmother does so not sure why she didn't make them in it.

I remember my sister talking about making grilled cheese sandwichs while at college. She used a clothes iron. Sounds messy to me.

In 12th grade speech class I even saw a demo of using an iron. I'm not sure I thought it sounded messy, but it sure sounded like a "why would anyone do this?!?" approach! But then...I was used to having a real kitchen (as limited as it was) at my disposal 24/7...

The ironed cheese sandwich

was wrapped in foil, and then ironed on the wool setting. College dorm life was very different before the microwave era. Lots of dorms had few electrical outlets, and breakers/fuses going were a commonplace.

John,

I think that the sandwich would be wrapped in aluminum foil before applying the iron to grill it. If it was done this way there shouldn't be a great deal of mess, though I've never tried this before myself. But if I really wanted a grilled cheese sandwich and was without a stove, grill or electric frying pan I'd give it a try. Cole's toaster method should work OK too, but you wouldn't get that nice buttery, grilled surface, it would be dry on the outside. Hey, you do what ya gotta do.

According to my sister, BGSU dorms didn't allow frying pans, griddles, etc., but they were allowed to have an iron.

I suspect that most dorms have such rules...

I never lived in a dorm, but I do recall hearing that my college had a long list of items presumably prohibited due to fire risk. However, the dorms did apparently have some sort of kitchen space, so it wasn't like students would starve or necessarily have to do something creative with an iron to make something to eat. (There was also requirement of a dining plan in the student cafeteria on campus, but, of course, that didn't cover snack time. Nor the nights when dinner was beyond terrible.)

well, to me, grilled cheese was always done on a grill of some sort....

toasted cheese was 4 slices toasted, buttered, laid flat on a plate with a slice of cheese on each, micro for about 10 seconds or so, and then assemble...
