Guess what Bobby got this weekend???

It's without a doubt the old helical tranny. I fired her up after the gym last night at the kitchen sink. (She is in the middle of the kitchen at this writing.) Purrs like a kitten. Tub bearing is a little dry, like most older Tags. Polish on Friday, install on Saturday. Lots of dirty clothes to be washed Saturday night. I'll post some pics.

Good find Bobby these are now officially collectible! That one is in MINT shape, and with that tub and agitator it will be nice and sloshy, can't wait to see it in action!

The first of the orbital tranny washers did have the blue/turquoise agitator and it was probably offered as a replacement with the orbital kit for older machines. These were probably changed to white as well when they began using white in all the new production machines.

seems like the new tranny was a big cost savings for Maytag. the orbital style looks like it weighs less than half what the previous did. looks like a lot less metal used.

Add-on start capacitor for Maytag A712

I was recently given a Maytag A712 washer that was not running. The motor hums, but won't start. I decided to try the 'add-on' start capacitor to see if that was what was wrong with it and got one at the electrical supply in town. Now I have the part and can make the wire connectors, but can't find any info on how to wire it in. Do any of you guys know how the wires should be attached? Your help would surely be appreciated! I'm confused...

...but that's nothing new. I bought my Maytag new and had it shipped here boxed in the van with my stuff in 2001. It does not have an orbital transmission. The transmission looks almost identical to the machines I worked on years ago. The motor of course is different and the blue "porcelain" outer tub is really plastic. The agitator stroke is long. I took this photo a couple of months ago when I changed the noisy pump...the only service it's needed to date.
