Happy Saint Nicolaus!

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Wow, Louis you are the first person that I know of who got a washing machine from Sinterklaas!

I have treated myself with a new computer :D

I got from Sinterklaas/St. Nicolas/Nikolaus....

...chocolate with almonds, orange, marzipan, walnuts into one of my bikerboots....
My mate got the same plus Walker's Scottish toffees and two marzipan breads plus MonCherie cherry pralinés...
He was so good to me this year....lol

I always asked for a washing-machine or vaccuum or mixer or coffee-maker for Nicolas-day or X-mas but neither the Christmas-Child nor Saint Nicolas ever brought one for me.....

So I went for Ebay....

BTW...

The film from Amsterdam is like a mixture of different habbits here in Germany!
The parade with the cannon we have here in Cologne and Düsseldorf and Mainz on our Carnival parades and the atmosphere of your Sinterklaas parade is more or less like our Carnival...lol

The throne with Sinterklaas and his helpers (Swarte Pieten) is the same as I told above, when talking about what used to happen in our neighbour's home every year during my childhood time, except that Knecht Ruprecht and the Krampus aren't black and wear different clothes. The Swarte Piet looks like the Sarotti Mohr (Sarotti Negroe) on a popular chocolate brand (Sarotti) here in Germany!

It appears that every region has it's own variations. Sinterklaas has a lot of helpers nowadays, each with a specific task, and they tend to get more attention than Sinterklaas himself. The customs around Sinterklaas are constantly changing. Even during my lifetime I have seen many changes. The number of helpers has increased from one or two to an almost infinite amount. The helpers were at first supposed to beat naughty children and the ultimate punishment was to be taken to Spain never to be seen again. Many popular Sinterklaas songs still refer to this punishment. However, nowadays Sinterklaas announces upon arrival that all children are good and the helpers do not carry anymore the implements that were used for beating. Then we had a time when it was considered wrong to give children sugary sweets as that was unhealthy and would cause tooth decay so fruits and nuts were given instead. Also there has been a lot of debate about the skin colour of Zwarte Piet. Multi-coloured Pieten were introduced but they didn't become popular. The behaviour of Sinterklaas himself has also changed. When I watched the parade as a child, Sinterklaas was solemnly riding his horse and kept in the centre of the street. Nowadays Sinterklaas rides back and forth, from left to right, shaking hands everywhere.

Yup he came this night and brought my only chocolat and nic-nacs:p Sinterklaas over here is the same as in the Netherlands. I remember me watching the arrival of his highness somewhere in the Netherlands because they skipped here in Belgium. Now since a year or two his arriving again in Antwerp and still thousands of childern and parents go there to see the man with his helpers.

Sinterklaas exsisted long time ago and he came from Turkey (Saint-Nicolas from Myra) There are three legends 1) tells the story about him helping 3 girls with money to get married. He gave golden appels (now replaced by oranges) 2) He found children who where kidnapt by a hotelowner, killed and put in a tub of water and salt. The Saint found them and brought them back to live. (reason why he loves kids) 3) he prevented a fishingboat from sinking by changing the weather (that's why he comes with a boat to our area's). The traditions in the Netherlands and Belgium are the same. Germany have other helpers (they said at school is that true? They should be more like a monster in stead of black, happy and a bit nuts...) In France they know Saint-Nicola. Santa-Claus we know now come from this tradition. Only by mixing up a religious party (Sinterklaas, Saint-Nicolas from Myra) with a Germanic of Celtique (dunno exactly) Joelfeasts (with Wodan).
It's a very long explenation and dunno if everything is true.

My mom is German. When we were kids we'd put our shoes out at the fireplace and in the morning there would be a few coins in them. Never anything else. Interesting how the customs can vary. None of my friends are familiar with this tradition.

'Washing machine

I'd love to get a washing machine for X-mas - a real washing machine with a hydraulic motor and a woodden tub....
Listen, Christmas-child! Pleaaasse bring me one. I know my mate will send me to hell, but I don't care!!

Theo,

It's a real washing machine. It's a compact toploader without spin, a Constructa. I've always wanted this particular model from Siemens, not knowing Constructa made them too. It's my first BSH machine. I have to be patient though, it's going to be delivered on the 14th.

You must come over sometime in the new year, we'll have the first Dutch wash-in!

Louis
