Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Anyone know the capacity of that particular GE dryer?  I've got one just like it and the interior of the drum seems huge - the opening likewise - if you'll notice the larger door on some of the older GEs.  It seemed to dry very fast to me.  Just curious about it's capacity.

I would say it's close to 8 cu. ft.  That's what a 1/18 dryer is and this is pretty close to that.  I used to be able to get two 3/4 GE washer loads or a full and 1/2 load into the dryer and dry if needed--if the same type of fabrics.

John, I vaguely remember someone around her commenting the 1/18 dryer was about the largest ever produced of vintage products and was close to or at 8.0 cu. ft.

Biggest Vintage Home Dryers

Hi Bob, maybe when the 1-18 was introduced it may have been one of the biggest dryers across the entire FD line, but I am quite sure that the GE in question is bigger, also many of the Norge-Wards dryers were bigger than the 27" wide FDs. And bigger still is the limited model that WP built for Sears in 1969, I have one of these 31" wide dryers and it is huge, unlike the big GE the drum is full diameter all the way to the front of the dryer [ on the GE the drum diameter is really cut down at the front for the bearing slides ].

Sears carried this dryer so they could say they had a bigger dryer than Wards who was beating up on Sears over capacity of washers and dryers in the late 60s.
