I am so sorry to hear about your gorgeous Funkie. You gave her a good, long life and was well taken care of. I know that she provided a lot of love and comfort to you as well!

I recently had to do the same thing with my beloved Tank. While it wasn't easy, I knew it was the right thing to do. He's in a beautiful urn next to my bed, so I can see him every morning when I wake up.

Even though it hurt so much, we are now on the quest to find a new puppy/dog. We have fostered doggies since Tank's passing but none have been right. I am waiting for the right fit for our family before committing. I just can't imagine not having a dog in our lives. Right now, my house seems so quiet and boring without someone greeting me at the door when I come home!

I'm so sorry for your loss. All the while reading this thread, I was crying my eyes out for you. I've been through this a lot myself, except with cats. You have my full support in choosing to end her suffering, though. It's just not right to allow a pet to die an agonizing death.

May God bring peace in your time of mourning. I truly believe God sends the Holy Spirit to comfort us through our pets. They're our children and I do believe we will see them again.

My Blessings and Prayers to you Pete:

I was faced last November with a similar situation with my 14-1/2 year old Cat, Speedee. Everyone told me that I should put her down, so she wouldn't suffer. I didn't want to do that, I wanted her to go naturally. I am so glad that I waited, because she really only dealt with whatever was wrong, for a couple of Weeks. {I know that for an animal, that is probably somewhat of a long time}. She would cry out, but sometimes it sounded more like "Where Are You" when other times I knew she was dealing with some Pain.

The most unfortunate thing that I faced, was that I didn't have any extra Money to take her to the Vet's, to even just find out what was wrong with her, even if there might not be any hope for Treatment.

I had her Body Cremated and I have her Ashes in a beautiful Cedar Wood Box, that looks like a Jewlery Box. It was a part of the Cremation process and also included a Brass Plate with Inscription on it. They couldn't get everything that I wanted on the Plate and I asked how much another Plate would cost and he told me that he would do another one at no Charge for me.

I got a Certificate of Cremation and the beautiful "Crossing the Rainbow Bridge" Writing also included all for $125.00.

Take care Pete, you know that you've got a big Circle of Friends here who care and who look out for each other, when we all have our times of needs.

Back in the day...

On the farm it would not be unusual for the farmer to take an unwanted litter of kittens and drown them in a tub of water.

Or to take out a terminally sick animal and dispatch it with a single shot.

Of course drowning isn't humane and while Fish and Game may regard the gun shot to be humane, it's not legal in most urban situations (let alone in an apartment). Se we are left with paying a vet to inject the animal with an overdose of opiates and perhaps a final toxic dose of some salt. More humane? Absolutely. But the animal is gone regardless.

Hi Pete. I am sorry to hear about Funkie. It is so hard to say good bye and you certainly do not want her to suffer.
I am going through this with my eldest cat, Lieselotte. She is 18 years old and I am watching her every day. She seems to have less energy and has lost some weight.
When the time comes, Lieselotte will be cremated and I will bring her ashes to the Rector of my parish for blessing.
Then the ashes will be interred with my other pets in the
pet columbarium at my former parish in Palm Desert, California.

i'm sorry to hear about your kitty

i had funkie cremated as well and i pick up her ashes tomorrow. she will rest beside my 2 dobermans that she grew up with, china and king. china died at 14 of cancer, i had her in treatment for a year. king died suddeenly in 2006 of heart disease, he was only 6 years old.

it is extremely painful to say goodbye and even more painful to have to end their lives but when were doing it we know we have to. we can't let them suffer!

it is way too quiet around my house now, funkie had a big mouth on her and was always barking at somethihng. the silence is very hard to accept. my other dog duke seems to be doing okay with it, better than me i think.

looks so sweet! and for being 18 she looks very well indeed!
we've always had cats in our family since i was a kid and some of ours lived to be 18 to 20 years old also!

hopefully lieselotte will continue to stay healthy even if she is slowing down and losing a bit of weight. hopefully no sadness for a long while in your home!
