HE Detergent, Is it really necessary?

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

bearing failure

while it is true that some bearing failure is and can be from oversudsing, most of the time the real culprit is twofold , overloading and poor machine design (cheap undersized bearings) overloading by as little a l lb can put 10lbs more stress on a bearing when in extract. also out of balance loads will add to that stress and cause bearings to fail a lot sooner ,as well as a machine that is not perfectly level. We have had that exact thing happen here 3 times. When one of the 50 lb machines was installed it was not level evenly and the bearings went in less than 2 weeks. Also on a a domestic Frigidaire Gallery the bearings went due to washman over loading and causing a out of balance load. Don't think that just beacuse the out of balance switch will cut the machine out if it is out of balance that that is enough protection any load the caused the tub to "bounce" enough to move the rubber boot to touch is enough to damage the bearings. The bearings in most of todays machines are not heavy duty enough to take a beating that the larger capacity machines have. Some of the problem is caused by them trying to meet energy requirements and makeing the machines spin faster than the bearings can really handle with the extra vibration caused by the higher speeds. Miele is one of the few execptions they have large enough bearings and a good balance system to handle vibration problems , Sure they cost more but you get just what you pay for,

Just about the time I bought my "Frigimore" back in '96, the HE detergents were just beginning to show up on the grocers shelves around here.

There was a sample of the Tide HE that came along with my new machine. I tried it right away and it seriously oversudsed the new machine. (Of course, there most certainly would have been residue left over from the previous washing in my TOL Maytag "orbital" as it had a very poor rinse).

However, over the next year, I bought Gain HE and Wisk HE and came to the conclusion that all the damn HE's made just as much suds as the regular detergents, and were therefore a waste of money---so I went right back to regular detergents.

One day it dawned on me that years ago I had used "Fresh Start" in my GE combo and it did not oversuds too badly-----so I went on a search and finally found some at my local Kroger. It did all right as far as suds were concerned but did a poor job of removing perspiration odors. So I went back to Tide or Gain. I never could get the dosage right, but was harder to guage with a load of towels than anything else. I just left the "Extra Rinse" option on all the time.

After about three years, I took the machine out of service.(And have never used it again!). That machine was pretty tough. Some movers dropped it "free-fall" down a flight of stairs during a move. When it landed at the bottom of the stairs, it took out the door knob, and a chunk of the parquet floor and had a dent on the top of the console, but otherwise never had a problem, not even with a bearing!

Now, since then I have discovered the new "Fab" detergent which is very low sudsing, and is almost always on sale at $2.79 or $2.99 box or bottle! The Fab is available in three "flavors" and is more "low sudsing" then the HE detergents. Costco's "Kirkland Signature Institutional" detergent (which comes in a 32lb. plastic pail. and is incredibly cheap at $11.00 or so!) makes almost NO SUDS at all, and you can use as much of it as you want in case you have a really dirty load----so I think it is the best "F/L" detergent I have found yet, as no matter how much you use you always get a clear rinse.

Gansky has used both in his F/L's and has VERY soft water, and I think he would agree with my assesment.

(My two shekels)

Fab

Hi!
Then this FAB is the best you can use in a FL!
This is like our powders and liquids here in Germany or, as far as I know, whole Europe - they hardly produce any foam!
I use them in my TL, too, as there aren't any other detergents available here in Germany because there are only FL in the shops to buy! (Except one or two specials via internet or old machines from the time before 1970.)

I use any liquid detergent in my Haier frontloader at the lake, just a tablespoon or two. I never had a suds problem, but the water is drawn from the lake an is hard, so I guess that is the answer.

Oh I said "new" FAB as opposed to the old 1960's (very high sudsing) Lemon Freshened Fab. Did not mean to create confusion.

The Fab I use is indeed made by Colgate-Palmolive and is available in Powder or liquid. Considering it's economical price, I was shocked when I first used it and saw how well it cleaned my filthy gardening clothes.

CR Finally Rates "HE" Detergents

On their own.

December's CR has ratings of HE detergents finally separate from normal detergents. The ratings for detergents are just after the laundry appliance ratings.

In rakings from first pick to last:

SA8 with "Bioquest"
Gain HE
Tide Free He
Cheer Colour Guard HE
Kirkland Signagure Ultra
Sears Advanced Formula Plus with Oxi-Clean Ultra HE
Method Fresh Air 3x Concentrate HE
All Small & Mighty Fresh Rain HE
Purex HE
Dropps

The first four all scored "excellent" for cleaning and keeping dirt off fabrics, with SA8 scoring excellent for keeping dyes off fabrics as well. Gain was only good at dye suspension and Tide Free HE, "fair". Cheer got a good

The final three, all scored "good" in terms of cleaning, with the first two "excellent" at keeping dirt off and dyes suspended.

All detergents tested were liquids, except SA8 and Sears. Dropps (who has ever heard of this detergent?)was "grains".

Noticed when perusing Wal-Mart couple days ago: Tide HE powder, liquid, and 2X liquid ($12.99/bottle!); Cheer HE liquid; Gain HE liquid.

Used Tide HE powder on a moderate load of whites/towels in the F&P today. 125°F EcoActive. Maximum wash time but no soak. No oxybooster. Results were VDG.

*Very Damn Good.

Notice they didn't rate wisk.. Wonder why???? Would love to put my paws on some cheer HE..

Is Kirkland only available at Costco?

I tried some arm and hammer liquid today and had suds out the ying yang... Got rid of the suds and used very minmal arm and hammer and it worked just ok, not quite as good as the Wisk or Tide HE

Launderess, did you see the following page?

MORE ratings, lol!

Exploder, the Kirkland is Costco's house brand.

Sudsman, I had the STRANGEST experience with a friend of mine who sold Amway, but I did like that "SA8" powder she sold me...

It was in a plastic bag packed inside a cardboard box and worked really well!

I really, REALLY like Costco's products, and they have a great return policy...it's almost no questions asked (not that I would do that...)

If you have a Sam's Club or BJ's, I hear they're pretty decent too.

SA8 is always for sale by someone on fleaBay. In fact many Amway laundry and other products are found there as well.

Yes, did see the ratings for non-HE detergents on the following page, but wanted to keep my post on thread topic.
Will say was gobsmacked that CR ranked Tide with Bleach way down with Tide with "Bleach Alternative" now top dog, followed by Tide Coldwater. IIRC Tide HE even rated above TCW. What is going on cannot understand. Unless P&G changed the formula of TWB since last year, how could it suddenly go from the top spot. Also Seventh Generation finally got out of dead last place, and was given a decent rating. Not as good as Tide products, but still better than it used to be.

Launderess, do you remember how they set such great store on the fact that they tested TCW in cold water last year?

Maybe their original assertion that warm water depresses TCW's scores proved to be correct, if they washed in warm this time!

I'll check THAT little detail later....

As for TWB powder, very odd...P&G is not one to forgo trumpeting any changes to their formulas, good or bad...

The only thing I can think of, is, remember my theory about that new "High Performance" Tide with Bleach that I believe sudsman posted about? That they'd foist a lower "performance" variation of TWB on us beleaguered consumers, and keep the "premium" formula (read: the one we were used to using, all along) at a higher price point, in select stores and the industry?

(Paging Alex Jones!)

Seriously, I would not put such machinations past P&G.

Oxydolfan1

Never put any thing past P & G I learned that many years ago. Did you use the reg S A 8 or the Bioquest. I really liked them both but now I think I will try Bioquest again. I too Can't understand why tide dropped in ratings. The last time that I used bioquest I remember that it gave all the work a nicer softer feel than the regular S A 8 did.
