Miele vented dryer filter(s)

I have five Miele 240V vented dryers ranging in age from 7 to 20 years old and all have only 1 actual “filter”. There are, what they call “grill filters” after the lint filter, but they do little to no filtering. There is not a 3rd filter. I believe the heat pump dryers do have 2 or 3 different filters which need to be cleaned regularly.

Ralph, that’s a tough call on the vented vs non-vented dryer. Perhaps if you do get the Miele pair, you can install them in another part of the house to really take advantage the lack of a need to vent. Hey then you can install more dishwashers where the laundry “was”! LOL!

Oh, I'm definitely in the camp of never having heard of clothing being affected by gas dryers. Here on aw.org is the first. It just seems like there're so many here who have had problems there must be something to it. I was just brainstorming as to possible patterns or explanations.

Bad washing habits might contribute to the problem too but I think the main culprit of stinky HP dryers is when people shut the door after unloading.
The looped system just doesn`t get hot enough everywhere to keep microorganisms from growing in the residual moisture.
This is less of a problem in traditional condenser dryers with much hotter resistant wire heating but even there it`s a disgusting habit in my opinion.
Why manufacturers usually don`t specify it in their owner`s manuals is beyond me.[this post was last edited: 5/26/2020-02:50]

I cannot detect any difference (nor can my partner) whatsoever in smell between laundry dried in our gas dryer versus our heat pump dryer.  I have seen those posts on AW in which some people say they can notice a difference and I have wondered why.

 

My Miele heat pump dryer is 6 years old and has no smell at all and is clean.  For years, I always used to keep the door closed and never had a problem.  In the last couple of years I've started leaving the door open to allow it to air out (for no reason other than it just seemed like a good idea).  I always close the door of vented dryers.

 

Interestingly, the Miele instructions for my heat pump dryer specifically tell you to always close the door after use to prevent children or animals climbing inside or objects being placed inside by children.

Small animals

Am a washer open dryer closed kinda guy as well.
It is a moist warm place and I would like my clothes spider free after drying...

I do notice the difference in smell.

But it is mainly a temperature thing.
In hot dryers if dryer sheets or softner or something are used, it smells stronger for shorter.

Never smelled a musty condenser dryer when kept clean.

<span style="font-family: georgia, palatino;">I am also a washer open, dryer closed kind of guy.  I got my first FL washer in 2002.  It was a Bosch and from day one I have always left the detergent tray out just a little and the door cracked open.  I do the same with Samsung Washer we have now.  In all these years I have never had any mold "in the fold" so to speak and never a musty smell.</span>

Heat Pump

Considered buying the "new at the time" Whirlpool Heat Pump HybridCare Dryer.
Ultimately I decided against it because of the increased maintenance and sensitivity to dryer sheets and other agents. We had 2 dogs at one point in time and I'm not sold on not using dryer sheets on certain items like synthetics and blankets. Also, a full load of towels would likely take nearly 3 hours to dry, and that is just too much mechanical stress on the compressor and other components for my taste. However, I now have a spin dryer from The Laundry Alternative that spins at 3200 rpm. This removes insane amounts of water from towels in particular. I do regret not purchasing the Heat Pump dryer.

Not quite sure what heat pump version Miele uses in the US, but since the system online draws 900W top I think, it should be quite simmilar to the EU.
