At my parents we have a solar collector since 1994 and it works great! It preheats the water for the boiler and from eary may to late september the gas consumption is ZERO, I mean, even if we leave the boiler on, it never really heats anything except when we call in the recirculator to have instantaneus hot water at the faucet but, when there are around 40°c warm water is something you'd like to avoid. Before installing it we had bills of around 180.000/200.000 lire (that is 100-210 euros in 1994) because of electric water heating, for the following year, 1995 we had 6 bills with 0 lire to pay, since the company overbilled us because they didn't know that we had installed. Solar collectors are usefull even in the darkest winter, they manage to keep water at 30-35 °c even when it rains or sky is cloudy. We only bypassed them during the only week that it snowed for a couple of days. Now, you can get a much more efficent system for half the price and best of all, completely integrated with your boiler. Well worth the investiment! You will get back the money spent in no more than 3-4 years!
