for 1955 General Electric oven Model # 1J501M. I need the Amperage and Voltage requirements for this oven ASAP please. The electrician needs it to allocate breaker space. Thanks.
Most single wall ovens need a 20 amp 240 volt circuit.
Ranges are rated by KW, so multiply that by 1000 to get the total wattage. The wattage is then divided by the voltage (240) to find the amperage. Multiply that by 125 percent to find the minimum circuit rating.
An example: 3.6 kw x 1000 = 3600 w. 3600 w ÷ 240 = 15 a. 15 a x 125 % = 18.75 a. The next circuit breaker rating is 20 amps.
Hi Louis, If it is a single wall oven a 2 pole 20 Amp breaker is fine.
If this is a single oven range a 2 pole 40 Amp breaker is fine
If this is a 2 oven 40" range and you are going to use it a lot a 2 Pole 50 Amp breaker is good, However if you don't intend to start cooking a lot it is safer on a 40 Amp breaker.
