Hi
As some of you may have seen , i had fitted my kitchen with original appliances and units etc from the 1950's - 60's. I am undergoing a re vamp at the moment ( i will post full pictures upon completion) and as apart of that re vamp i have had new formica worktops made using a 50's styled design. I also had my lovely 1961 new world 44 gas cooker serviced only to find it has a gas leak on the oven control thermostat, i have tried all over in the uk to see if anyone has replacements (even ukwhitegoods.co.uk) however a replacement cannot be found. This is a real shame as this is a great cooker to use and cooks, grills really well and i love its design. So my question to you all is, 1) does anyone know of any cooker suppliers that have been around a long time who may have spares? 2)does anyone have a suitable electric oven from that period as i think these are likely to be more repairable?.

I will also be refitting new vinyl tiles but have not been able to get any in the bright citrus yellow, blue, white etc i fancy , has anyone any ideas?

Also you will see i have eventually repainted this dishwasher (it looks a little bright compared to the cabinet doors but they have been on 7 years now )

Thanks

Richard

Beautiful!

Richard, I love your kitchen, especially the colors. It's very bright, and at the same time warm and inviting.

Your kitchens looking fantastic and real original. Don't give up on the stove too soon, the part will surely come your way hopefully sooner than later. BTW I love those stoves. When I was 16 back in around 1972 I went to the UK and stayed with my great aunt in Manchester for part of the summer and she had one similar. It was great for making melted sandwiches etc. Also got to Durham cathedral etc...Dads from Newcastle and have/had lots of relatives in that region. All the Kelly's and Hairs are my relatives LOL

Do you know who made the thermostat?

Most manufacturers of ovens don't make their own thermostats, but buy them from another manufacturer. If you can find the original manufacturer's part number then it could be cross-referenced to later replacement models or even thermostats from other manufacturers.

thanks

Hi thanks guys! i hope to show you it all when its finished as its been done 7 years so needed a re vamp, i have tried an American stove repairer to see if they can re build uk thermostats, but thanks for the advice i will have a look to see if i can trace manufacturer.

I live in Medomsley near Consett about 20 mins from Durham city Centre

Richard:

Your floor tiles should be available anywhere in the U.K.; Armstrong make them in all three of the colours you show, or very close. I'm providing a link to their U.K./Europe web page for their Imperial Texture range below. Based on what I can tell from my monitor, their 57509 Lemon Lick is closest to your yellow, 57506 Colorado Blue is closest to your blue, and 57518 White Out matches your white most closely. Some checking of the Armstrong U.K. site should give you the name of a stockist who can order what you need.

The laminate on your countertops is a very famous American pattern known properly as "Skylark", and popularly as "Boomerang." It was designed in the early 1950s by Raymond Loewy. Formica still offer it in both the U.S. and the U.K.

thats good to know

Hi Danemodsandy thanks for the help, i did get the formica from a local supplier, i thought it was going to be expensive as the first supplier quoted over £200 just for the sheets, but i went to another who made them into work tops with joints and cuts ready to fit for about the same price about a month sooner! Its good to know its design heritage, and thanks again for the floor tile site, we used to have Marley floor tiles as a manufacturer but they no longer exist, i will study the site !!

Thanks again Richard

Is the entire cooker

unusable? Or just the oven and grill? I would be sad if you had to go electric. I simply despise electric cooktops/hobs.

Otherwise, your kitchen is simply beautiful! Please show us the fridge. Is it one of those wonderful SMEG brand fridges like Jamie Oliver had in one of his television series?

Richard:

You're welcome. I don't think Armstrong are as well-known in the U.K. as they are here, so perhaps their products are harder to find. But they are there, and I hope they'll be able to help you. BTW, they have a samples programme here, where you can order samples to check colour, etc. Look 'round their U.K. site to see if there's something similar on offer there.

Oh, and £200 is not a bad price for "Skylark" at all, if two sheets were involved. The stuff is very expensive.

fridge shot

a Smeg? oh no its an original GEC from 1960, Lawrence. I am afraid due to the slight leak the cooker has been condemned so i am not allowed to re connect it ( or at least i am liable if any thing bad happened ) i agree i would miss the fast grill and hob and very fast heat up oven.

Thanks 58" i will try them! anything would be great.

As for the cheese dish its not branded only has England on it so probably a cheaper copy.

Attached are some photos of the kitchen before i started to add the new worktops so you can see what it did look like

still no luck

Hi 58 limited i contacted TOAC and they kindly replied but they are unfortunately unable to help, so i have e mailed everyone in the uk who came up in a google search for new world gas!! so heres hoping!

Too bad they couldn't help - I'm a little surprised. In restoring old cars, I have sometimes had to have parts custom made, or try to refit a different part. You might end up having to do that in order to keep that stove - I would, because these old appliances are getting rarer and they just function better that many new ones. Plus, more character than the new cookie-cutter designs.

Oooh I see many things on those counters we have alike...
for starters the plastic watering jug by your window.
The Kenwood Chef model a700d
The Sunbeam Mixmaster model 12
The Bialetti espresso maker on the stovetop
I can't quite make out what that is in the corner near the Kenwood.. is that some sort of blender base and if so what kind LOL

Looks so inviting!
Your kitchen looks great.
I love the stove! Looks like you could really cook on that cook top!

Kenwood corner

Hi Petek the blender in the corner is also a Kenwood , it has the jug that fits the main table mixer i hope when finished to photo my smaller appliances as have groups of kenwood, sunbeam, russell hobbs, swan, etc and they would make great glam shots on the new worktops!
