HELP with GE Monitor style refrig...

Hey, Chuck here... perc's other half (I won't get into any of that better half or better-looking half stuff!). We have a chance to buy a monitor style refrigeration unit. It's got the globe style top instead of the round can (tuna can looking) top unit. The question is... can we transport it on its side, or does it need to be transported standing up. Please help ASA as we leave here tomorrow morning!!!Rich is out looking for other treasures while I help my dad here, otherwise he'd have written himself!!!

Hey Chuck, just saw your post. I checked with my Appliance guy and he says you can lay it on it side for transportation, but when you get it home, IT HAS TO BE IN AN UPRIGHT POSITION FOR AT LEAST 24 HOURS OR MORE BEFORE PLUGGING IN. This gives a chance for the gas to settle.

hi chuck,you can take the top off the cabinet,then lay it down to transport.be careful it is real heavy. don.

Chuck, He also said it would help after lying it on its side if you could cushion it for its ride home either with and old blanket or quilt.

Personally,I would NEVER lay an older one on it's side.You take a chance on oil migrating from the compressor into the lines,and causing a problem.Why take a chance? Just my $0.02

Be careful in shipping and handling the unit-I beleive the refrigerent in those monitor tops was Sulpher dioxide.That stuff is toxic.

Home at last!

Thank you all for sharing your thoughts on the transporting of the GE fridge. We did get it and it fits perfectly!!! We will let the unit sit for 24 hours before we plug it in.

We have been wanting a monitor top for a while so this is a particular thrill.

I will try to send some pics of it in the next couple of days.

Monitor Top

Hi Guys
The best way I've found to move the Monitor tops is to lift top off, (this includes the freezer compartmaent)its all one unit, I set the top on two inverted milk crates, and secure it with bungee cords, once the unit is in place place the refrig unit back on top and let the unit set for 24 hrs (no cheating) it should start and run like a top!!! Enjoy the Monitor Top GE

Well, Is it cooling nicely, I have a 4 set of black foot pads that go underneath the legs to protect the floor, your welcome to them if you want! I beleive that was called a Planet Top

Thank you for offering these. Are they something that was sold with the monitor? What would you like for them?

The unit works GREAT and it's so quiet that i have to realy listen hard to hear it run. The freezer works FAST!!!

I have a Hamilton Beach electric ice cream maker, from the 1930's, that I am dying to try. Now I can!! Perhaps for the NE Wash-in

I got the pads from a unit that was on the front porch of a house being torn down, there about 3/4 in thick and have a groove for the leg, I have a pretty good idea what box their in, I just cleaned the work room and will locate them, maybe we can swap out a toaster or like item, let me know, Have a great NE wash in
