Help!

Hey folks...
I just got a Maytag A207(not a big deal, but a neighbor was throwing it out and I thought I might pair it with my Mom's DE308 dryer) and I'm starting to work on it. You've probably been over this a million times on this site but since I'm still relatively new: how do you get an obstinate agitator out? This is a powerfin job WITHOUT the lock-nut underneath the filter column so I'm assuming it's rusted onto the drive-spline. Any way to do it without breaking apart the agitator?

Grab bottom of agitator and pull up sharply. The old aqua Power Fin agitators had no nut to hold them down on the shaft.

No Rust!

The old powerfins did not have a metal spline so there is no way for it to rust. If the washer works, it is only obessesive to want to look under the gyrator. Most repairs, short of transmission are done with out removing the agitator.

See if you can beg,borrow,or steal an Agitamer.A neat tool,that uses water pressure to remove stubborn agitators.

Agitamers are nice sometimes but when using it on a powerfin there can be the problem of the agitamer expanding and only curling up the bottom of the agitator due to the flexible plastic they are made of. The agitamer sometimes breaks if allowed to blow up too much without moving the agitator. Agitamers work best on agitators with the splines on top such as Whirlpool or GE.

I thought some of the early plastic powerfins still had a metal spline. Maybe I am thinking of the wringer agitators.

In any case the plastic spline can be really stubborn anyway. The hold down ring gets hard and the metal drive shaft can corrode, still making them difficult to remove.

First try filling it with very hot water and after an hour of soaking drain and try again to remove it by hand. If it doesn't come off then try rocking the agitator back and forth then try again....and again....and again.

I'll tell you how I got mine off. I took a package of clothesline rope and threaded it up and down inside the center of the agitator, like a web. I laid the machine down on it's side and tied the web of rope to a large slide-hammer and hammered it off. It was really on there!

I just did this today. Fill the tub halfway with hot water and let sit a few minutes. Drain the tub and then grab the bottom on each side and rock back and forth while pulling up. It should come off. You'll be amazed at what you find under there. Good Luck! Patrick
