Please read this post in its entirety.
Major changes just went into the system, so me of these you will actually be able to see the results of this time.
#1 If a thread was created after 2/23/2010 (7:00pm) its text is now being saved in a database as opposed to a html file. This will open up a new world of possibilities for features in the future that were previously impossible by saving the posts as text in a html formatted file. On the index page you will see a new icon (tube with a gear) letting everyone know that its a new style thread. Once all threads in all three forums on the active list are of this new style I will remove that icon and adjust the code so you will be able to post html links (like youtube videos) without having to remove the " marks first. For the techies out there: When you click on a link to read a new style database thread, the posts will be read out of the database presented to you via a perl cgi-program, the old threads are simply sent to you via a html file.
#2 On the index page you will notice a little green down arrow next to any new style thread. If you click the little green down arrow it will display the thread but IT WILL SORT THE POSTS BY REVERSE ORDER. Meaning the newest posts will be at the top of the screen. Ahhh the wonders of database threads.
One known issue with this new green down arrow feature in Firefox (not in IE6, IE8 or Safari) is that if you click the green arrow to view the postings in reverse order the link back on the Index page does not turn from blue (unread) to purple (read). It will change color properly if you hit refresh once or twice. Internet Explorer and Safari doesn't seem to have that issue and I will try to figure out what the issue is with Firefox with a later round of code changes.
#3 In all new style threads if you are not logged in you will get login options at the bottom of the thread, once you log in the reply boxes will magically appear. This saves a step or two for you guys later on and it solves the not logged-in but uploaded picture bug.
#4 The new icons on the index page are for regular aw.org users only so you will have to be logged in to see them.
I uploaded these changes last night and there were some major bugs did that I didn't catch earlier in Development so I backed the changes out. If we are still have major problems I will back out these changes again and go back to the drawing board.
There most certainly will be bugs, please post any issues you see in this thread and not in the regular discussion threads as I might miss them and they are off topic to that thread.
This is just the beginning, searching through a database is much easier and faster which will enable me to revamp the Super-Searchalator at some point to be much more thorough than going through Google.
