Please read this post in its entirety.

Major changes just went into the system, so me of these you will actually be able to see the results of this time.

#1 If a thread was created after 2/23/2010 (7:00pm) its text is now being saved in a database as opposed to a html file. This will open up a new world of possibilities for features in the future that were previously impossible by saving the posts as text in a html formatted file. On the index page you will see a new icon (tube with a gear) letting everyone know that its a new style thread. Once all threads in all three forums on the active list are of this new style I will remove that icon and adjust the code so you will be able to post html links (like youtube videos) without having to remove the " marks first. For the techies out there: When you click on a link to read a new style database thread, the posts will be read out of the database presented to you via a perl cgi-program, the old threads are simply sent to you via a html file.

#2 On the index page you will notice a little green down arrow next to any new style thread. If you click the little green down arrow it will display the thread but IT WILL SORT THE POSTS BY REVERSE ORDER. Meaning the newest posts will be at the top of the screen. Ahhh the wonders of database threads.

One known issue with this new green down arrow feature in Firefox (not in IE6, IE8 or Safari) is that if you click the green arrow to view the postings in reverse order the link back on the Index page does not turn from blue (unread) to purple (read). It will change color properly if you hit refresh once or twice. Internet Explorer and Safari doesn't seem to have that issue and I will try to figure out what the issue is with Firefox with a later round of code changes.

#3 In all new style threads if you are not logged in you will get login options at the bottom of the thread, once you log in the reply boxes will magically appear. This saves a step or two for you guys later on and it solves the not logged-in but uploaded picture bug.

#4 The new icons on the index page are for regular aw.org users only so you will have to be logged in to see them.

I uploaded these changes last night and there were some major bugs did that I didn't catch earlier in Development so I backed the changes out. If we are still have major problems I will back out these changes again and go back to the drawing board.

There most certainly will be bugs, please post any issues you see in this thread and not in the regular discussion threads as I might miss them and they are off topic to that thread.

This is just the beginning, searching through a database is much easier and faster which will enable me to revamp the Super-Searchalator at some point to be much more thorough than going through Google.

Robert

All the threads previously read this morning have turned once again to blue, and not purple.

Threads that are read now return to purple to let me know I have read them.

Hi Gary

All the threads previously read this morning have turned once again to blue, and not purple.

That's to be expected with a change in code and link address. All old threads will revert to blue until you click on them with this new code change.

Robert first thanks for everything you do I'm sure all members here really appreciate as well as i your time and effort to keep the site going with improvements and maintenance thanks again.
I am slow when using computers i don't understand the tool html file situation can you explain it differently please.
And when i use the super- searchalator it is hard to find my old post's and others threads and how do you put the thread if i found a old thread into a new thread ? I have a Mac mini.
Thanks.

Darren k.

Just got home and opened the Imperial Forum

to find these tiny strange World War 2 mines all over the page. Afraid if i click on one, they may blow up. (huge Grin). They're so cute. Nice touch, Man.

aldspinboy's profile pictureRobert it seems like all profiles are not visible or present at this time.

Ding ding, first bug, thank you Darren I'll get to work on that ASAP, gotta pee first :-)

Don't know if it's part of the profile problem already mentioned, but every post in every thread I view has a Dash detergent background.

So far, everything seems to be working really well, thank you!

On the index page you will notice a little green down arrow next to any new style thread.

That is working wonderfully too. My suggestion, for when/if you redo the index pages, is to put that arrow near the thread numbers, so with just a slight move of the mouse/pointer one can select either regular or reverse order.

Profile problem is fixed, actually every post I look at has the 60's Frigidaire logo, go figure. Back to work!

Thanks Glen, I'll get on that.

There we go all fixed.

Are we getting backgrounds back in the Super Forum?
Hi Louis, for years I've had it coded that no wallpaper will display in Super Forum threads. Once we move all the controversial stuff to Dirty Laundry I'll think about changing that.

The location field apparently has been truncated to 30 characters maximum.

Oh you're right Glen, I'll up it from 30 to 60 characters in the database and adjust the profile create and update programs. When you change your location in your profile it will now flow through to all database threads and they will all be updated instantly!

I would appreciate if people would include at least a state or country. I understand some might not be comfortable revealing what city they are from although it is fun for most of us to see where everyone is from.

Cute little bald guy

I'm seeing at the bottom of every thread, asking me to log in.

Is it just his weekly request now embedded right in the thread, or will we be signing in every time we post.....

(In an arch British Hyacinth Bouquet Voice)..... for security purposes only, Richard?

Nope, just log in Mike and the system will keep you logged in for seven days. Since you obviously logged in to make this post you should now be seeing the new Logged-in "Push the Dial in guy" with boxes to reply below.

What if you're a Maytag guy and you have to PULL the dial out to proceed? (ducks and runs...)

Thanks for the work!

RCD

I saw him right away, meditating with his hand on the wand ;

In the past, every 7 days we'd go to send a post, and the white page would overtake the screen, but now the little guy is already there to remind us, and no white shock. Pretty cool magic, a tweak of the nose, and now we get to see him all the time--a reminder to be light-hearted!

lol Drew, looks like we will have to find some cute little whimsical Maytag washer cartoons then for the Maytag side of our family.

Speaking of cute little washer whimsical drawings, if you have some of those and would like to scan them for me at a high resolution so I can use them here on the site please do and email them to me. I'm looking for vintage washer, dryer and dishwasher related cartoons like our new little "logged in dial pusher" at the bottom above the reply boxes.

Any help sure would be appreciated.

What do we do if the gear starts spinning out of control, and shreds both the tube and the green arrow?

We all go back to IBM Selectrics then :-)

I'll move those arrows around a bit, this is all experimental right now.

Nice work Robert! I don't understand some of the terms of the programming you do, but it always works out for the better for the site. Thank you for all you do.

BTW: LOVE your new avatar. Those pink Kenmores are just beautiful! Nice to see them again.
