I used to think those were the ugliest telephones. BCTel in Vancouver which used to be a subsidiary of GTE had them but they obviously weren't very popular because you seldom saw one. The dispatcher at work had one, it was wall mounted to a scissor like extension.

bethann that style predates the 60's at least in Western
Electric manufactured phones. They were a fairly routine
item in typically nonphony places, like loading docks, and
back rooms in stores. I don't recall ever seeing a WE in color though, always basic black!
