Stopped by the local high end shop last week that is also a Miele dealer for other purchases. Whilst passing the detergent section went over to the Miele/Henkel rack to see what was on offer. Sure enough they had the same small boxes of Persil we did a swap for several months ago. One knows they are the same because upon taking a "nose test" the whiff is exactly the same.

Funny old world ain't it? *LOL*

Hello Dear

It funny, I was thinking about that the other day...
I was going to ask you about this on another thread (here is better)
Has that scent died down yet?
Who's buying this ?

But since one has confined the "working" box to a vintage Persil tin (see previous thread), things are well buttoned down on that front.

Am only using true European detergents in the new AEG so the Persil is now being depleted. Am doing this for various reasons but mainly because the machine and detergent were designed for each other. Also unlike the Miele one cannot easily do extra rinses. If there is detergent residue after the series of programmed rinsed in the AEG all one can do is either wait until the cycle is over and set for another rinse and spin, or abort final spin and do same. Would rather avoid all that and simply use proper detergent in correct dosage.

Many persons in NYC well at least Manhattan who own Miele and even other front loaders get their Persil or Miele laundry product fix from this particular shop. Their prices while higher than perhaps ordering from Miele directly, are still cheaper than most places selling the stuff online, and that includes eBay.

Case in point someone is selling Persil gel on eBay at nearly $38 per jug. It is only $20 (plus tax) at this store. Mind you the place is only several blocks away so we don't have to pay for shipping. Miele USA online sells same for exact price but living outside of NJ one wouldn't pay sales tax just shipping.

Have found with good rinsing and proper dosage the scent of this Persil isn't that bad after laundry is dried. While we tend to line dry especially after tumble drying the fragrance is faint.

I'm still working through that 80 load box of Persil Universal Powder I bought. I use one ounce with a slightly greater amount of STPP for a load of bath sheets in the SQ. Its low sudsing makes it the perfect detergent to use with loads that have a tendency to foam during the first extraction. I haven't even been able to smell it now for months unless I put my nose right over the box and it leaves no odor at all in the load after the cycle is over.

Does anyone have an opinion on whether this or the Miele detergent is better?

Gain Liquid

Am up late doing the washing now; have a load in the Miele with Gain "lavender" scent in the Miele atm.

Bought a job lot of the stuff at a what seemed a good price then (anything lavender scented for laundry always gets my vote), and find am rather betwixt and between about the fragrance. With careful dosage and rinsing it isn't *that* bad. Nothing like the fresh lavender of one's European laundry products or French lavender buds/stalks used to make scent pouches for linen storage; but a good work a day scent. Nice for sheets and towels.

Find after line drying, ironing and airing much of the scent dies down. Tumble drying will also help take down the whiff factor a peg or two.

Universal Powder

I've been using Persil Universal Powder for about 3 years. With a dight of STPP, I do not use LCB anymore except for the Clean Machine cycle on the Miele.

For towels and anything else White with no elastic, I use the Sanitize cycle (Similar Boil Wash) and the results are stunning.

If you Love Persil so much......

Launderess. you gotta try Dixan (Persil in Italy) in Lavender scent!!!
Dixan Lavanda.....  I trhink you'd like it...
As for the Ver Nel softener in Lavender scent...
But guess you already tried the German Persil Lavendel...
But IMO another very good Lavender scent is the Fabuloso softener (Colgate Palmolive)...

No More Lavender

Have three bottles of the Gain and one of a French soap based lavender detergent. I'm done. As things stand still am on the first bottle of Gain and it is barely 3/4 empty. At barely 15ml or 25ml dosage per wash it is going to take ages to work through all this Gain. Happily one of my favourite aunts loves the stuff so some of it might make it to her home.

Have Found With Most Lavender Products

Aside from the FrankenLavender Gain liquid detergent, the scent does not last very long after drying, less if one uses a tumble dryer.

While one loves the fresh scent of *real* French lavender, most of the stuff sold for laundry use has barely a passing relationship to that classic fragrance.

Seventh Generation used to make a pretty decent version lavender/mint fabric softener, but haven't looked for it in ages.

AEG suitable laundry detergents?

Hello - new here :) I am hoping someone has a few suggestions for detergents that are safe (but effective) to use with AEG washing machines? I have only had the machine a few weeks now, and the big box of Persil Colour Megaperls suppplied with it is simply way WAY too strongly perfumed. I ordered Persil Sensitive online, but it's still highly scented - and not sure if it contains enzymes (which I do want).

I figure I will have to order European detergent online (since I'm in N. America) but finding it hard to locate low foaming, clean rinsing, enzymatic, UNSCENTED or very faintly scented detergent. BTW, I mainly use it for warm to hot washes. I was told by retialer where I bought the machine that HE N. American brands are not suitable...thus my extensive google searches to source something else.

Any input much appreciated :)

We had that happen one time with Persil. I ordered some Persil Bio powder and when the package arrived, still unwrapped the scent was overpowering. After we unwrapped it and put the box in the laundry room it wasn't long before every last room in this house smelled strongly of the Peril. I had previously never smelled a detergent that was this strongly scented!

So I put the box on a shelf in the garage for about 6 months. The garage sure did smell nice, but eventually the odor came down to a manageable(tolerated) level. But it sure was "hot" when we got it!

Also have an AEG (well OKO-Lavamat) and yes it is particular about detergent.

If you have a unit with the jet recirculation system, then yes you need to be particular about detergent. It must be low froth *and* rinses easily. Only use European detergents in mine and am careful about dosage at that.

Sadly have yet to come across any main European detergent that is scent free. It is like the concept is totally alien or something.

I don't know how long it will take to get to your area, but results have been good with Tide HE Turbo Clean. It has suds that break down very quickly so they do not create problems in the drain and spin. I remember reports years ago on That Home Site about AEG machines having a strong sensitivity to suds.

If you let the Persil sit open a bit, the scent goes away completely.

Thanks to you both :) Yeah, it's definitely 'hot'. Even the inside of the machine still smells of it just from having the closed box stored there in the store. Unfortunately I just don't like the smell of it, even if it were milder :(

My AEG model does not include the recirculating jet (wish it did!), so perhaps this gives me more liberty to experiment with other types of detergents. I will start with tiny amounts of Charlie's or Ecover. Although very disappointed, it's good for me to know there really aren't unscented European detergents; makes me feel I wasn't lacking google search skills. Launderess, other than Persil do you have any recommendations for milder scented detergents suitable for AEG?

Thing about AEG washers, at least my Oko-Lavamat with Jetsystem is they are so efficient with water the margins for error in detergent dosage are slim.

Often I do not see froth during the wash phase, but when the rinses kick in, whoaaa Nellie!

With a good European detergent like Persil that is properly dosed by the second or third rinse things are fine. However if you have over dosed or used the wrong type of detergent even by the final rinse there is froth in the water.

One niggle have with that Jet System is the start of each rinse (when activated) will spew froth laden water back onto laundry until that sump is clean. There is no way to "flush" the system other than running a wash cycle empty. Using the separate "rinse" cycle (called Starching) does not activate the Jet System. This is probably a good thing as you wouldn't want starch residue spewed onto the next load washed. It would also become an excellent breeding ground for mould if the machine wasn't rinsed out afterwards.

Jeni

Have you considered selling or trading the persil? I know there's some here that might be interested and I'd like to be at the head of the list if you decide to get rid of the persil..lol..take care cheryl

Oh - great news about Persil scent disappearing completely! I will leave the Persil Sensitive in the outdoor storage area...

I will also source that Tide HE turbo clean. Thanks!

As for the Color Megaperls - I will gladly send it along to you Cheryl for the cost of postage. I'll get a quote from the post office - it's a 2.7 kg box, so may not end up being that cost efficient to send...will let you know :)
