Hi! Just got a Maytag LA510 and LDE7500

Hello! We've enjoyed visiting your site, and after our "new" Whirlpool w/d set turned into garbage after just three years, we set out to find an older Maytag set. Craigslist came through for us this morning, and we were able to snag an LA510 Series 01 Washer and LDE7500 Dryer in great working condition; not too pretty, but that's secondary to dependability in our book, after the "throwaway" Whirlpool disaster.

Wondering if someone could tell us what vintage these are, or direct us to a model-number chart somewhere. Stylistically I'd say they look very "70s" (they're that"almond" color...ie: not pretty), it would be good to know the year of make. The main thing to us is that they are good ol' American Iron from Maytag. Did a google on the model numbers and didn't come up with much. Would also like to know if anyone knows of a source for repair or owner's manuals, as we will want to keep these alive as long as we can. Thanks for having such a cool site. Enjoyed the old commercials a lot when we first found y'all! FWIW: We also have a 1949 Westinghouse fridge that runs like a champ. Old appliances definitely rock!

I found some parts diagrams on a site that also sells parts, and they seem to have the things I need to replace immediately, like the lint trap for the dryer. The people I bought it from had a small child, and it looks like there's crayon melted onto the lint trap frame. I've taken the plate off the lower back and vaccuumed much lint out of it. I'm going to take the front off and see if I can clean it out all the way. Got to also get rid of the heavy "fragrance" that's lingering (can't stand all those heavily scented laundry products!). Maybe a good soak in baking soda and water for the plastic parts I can remove from the lint trap frame is in order.

Come again? I guess there's something about "who made what when" that I don't know. It's got Maytag on it. I figure if it's at least 30 years old, no matter who made it, then it's GOT to be a far sight better than the pieces of garbage we bought new three years ago.

The 10 series is Maytag's first right-dial control panel layout with ivory buttons for temperature/water level/speed control/etc., introduced in 1980 so your machines are at least that old. It came in white, almond, and Steve (MayKen4Now) has a harvest gold version. Not sure if they came in Avocado though but I bet they did!

Wasn't this control panel design discontinued around 1984-85 or so and then the black panel layout was introduced?

Our "daily driver" washer is an A 511,which I believe is early 80's. Been a great washer,pulled it off a trade in junkpile about 10 years agne set of belts is all it's ever needed.

The washer control panel has a glossy finish, ivory buttons, chrome side panels, looks a few years older than the dryer. The dryer control panel looks "newer" and has a duller finish, black buttons, black side trim. I'm trying to get some pictures off the memory card in my cam to post, but the card reader isn't cooperating right now!

hi everyone i'm new here and felt this message was something i could contribute to. i have a maytag la712 washer bought new in 1987 when i moved to fl., this has been an oustanding washer as it ran 15 yrs without a single repair and in 2002 i replaced the pump. in 2003 when i moved i put this machine in my dry cleaning and laundry plant and it has run 8 or 9 loads a day since and is still running fine. this has truly been the best washer i have ever owned. in 2003 i bought a norgetag atlantis for my house and it has okay so far, but no comparison to the newton made maytag. i have owned 14 coin laundries and worked on just about every brand out there, but nothing works day in and day out like the old helical drive maytags with the power fin agitator. laundromat customers always liked the fedders made norges as the washed a large load clean, but they literally worked themselves to death and need
repairs. ge filter flos were decent washers in the coin laundries,good service easy to repair but always had transmissions leaking, but they were easy to replace. well i guess thats enough for now. talk to you all later

I'm curious to know as no doubt others, what Model of Whirlpool Washer and Dryer did you have that didn't last very long? Was the Washer a Front-Load or a Top-Load Washer and a Matching Dryer? I just can't believe that any Whirlpool Washer and/or Dryer wouldn't operate properly after only 3-years. If you happen to have the Model Numbers still available, it would most appreciative as well, thank you.

I don't know the model numbers offhand, but they were the "mid-grade" models from about three years ago. Bought 'em at Conn's, paid around $400 for the dryer, I think $450 for the washer. The dryer began squeaking while running almost immediately. It isn't anything visible that we could find. It's just gotten louder and louder, until it's now a high-pitched screech every turn of the drum. The washer was a poor performer from the beginning, not really able to handle large loads at all. Always had to stop it and rebalance the loads or it would walk. The "spin brake"(?) on it has broken completely, and it sounds horrendous when it tries to stop spinning, takes about 25 or 30 seconds of hideous banging to stop. We just couldn't take it any more. Did lots of online searches, found most people agreeing that "new" appliances just aren't built to last, and are constantly breaking. These two cured us of wanting anything new!

Thank you for your reply, about your Whirlpool Washer and Dryer. What did you do with them, after getting the Maytag's? Maybe someone near you, who knows about Repairing Washers and Dryers could get them from you, to use Parts off of them, to Repair other Models!!!

It is too bad that those problems didn't turn out when the Machines were newer, you might have been able to get the Company to replace them at no charge to you, with another Set.

I just can't believe that Whirlpools wouldn't keep going well, with such a short time span of use on them, I'm real sorry to hear about that happening with you.

We still have the Whirlpools, and will be stuck using them until we get the Maytags cleaned up and settled into the new "laundry nook" we're building for them. (Just got the Maytags this morning!) After we're finally done with the Whirlpools, we were thinking of giving them to Goodwill or some other place that could benefit by fixing them and reselling. The Whirlpools are very nice looking, but have truly been a disappointment as far as quality and ability from the word go. Perhaps if we'd gotten the "top of the line" instead of the "mid-grade" it would have turned out differently, but still, at only three years old, they shouldn't be in this shape.

Gotta tell ya, the Maytags just "FEEL" better to look at. They just seem more solid. And seeing "Newton, Iowa" on the model tags adds to that. And it seems that there is no shortage of parts. Found a new dryer lint trap at three different online stores for between $14/$15, and the cage that it fits in is also still available. If we can't clean the crayon off the trap and frame, we'll probably get new ones. That may also be the way to go to get rid of some of that awful "fragrance" saturation in the dryer.

The only caveat to switching from the Whirlpool dryer to the Maytag is the change from "top-rear-mount" filter to "door-mount" filter. Never really been that happy with door-mount filters, they don't seem to catch as much as the top filters, but if it will sit there and be a nice, quiet dryer for the next ten years or so without having to do anything to it, then we'll adjust! ;-)

Might you even "FYI" for curious minds and sight, be able to take some Pix's of your Whirlpool Washer and Dryer? It would be nice and interesting to see which Models they are, if for any reason, just in case any of us might see a Whirlpool Washer and Dryer 2nd Hand and they ended up being the same Models as the one's you've had problems with. It will certainly be most welcomed and very appreciative, thank you.

Thank you for the info, I hope that you get the Memory Card on your Computer operating all right, they as with a lot of things able to do on a Computer are either not what I've gotten into as of yet, or not known "How-To" do by my experience or "lack or" knowledge on my part.

we're the proud owners of an LA511 from 1983. It's as old as me! it's had one major repair, and that was to stop it from walking across the floor. Something to do with the suspension pivot point. But that was at least 12 years ago, and since then it's still running fantastically. We lost the matching dryer to a 2003 Neptune dryer because the 511's matching dryer kept blowing thermostats. But the Neptune dryer is virtually the same design, and the 3 years we've had it, it's been the best dryer we've ever seen.
