Oil BBHW up here in cold Maine
I have a 2 story 24x40 home with a New Yorker boiler and power venter exhaust. In the 16 years since installation, it consistantly uses 500 gallons per year for both heat and hot water. When first installed, heating oil was 60 cents a gallon. This past October was 3.49. Unfortunately, I am quite a ways out of the city, so natural gas is not available here. I also have a Hearthstone propane stove in the living room and an Empire propane fireplace in the downstairs rec room as backup in case of power failure. I did use wood for several years but it just was not worth all the hassle. Some neighbors have installed wood pellet stoves which seem to do a good job but require power to run where my propane ones do not.
