Hoover A3110 help needed please

Hi all.

As you may know I purchased Richards' very lovely Hoover A3110 back in the summer. She has been a delight and a pleasure to use, faithfully being hammered in a large household. She does at least 3 loads a day.

All been going fine, put a load on this morning and fortunately noticed that the pump wasn't working. Pulled our machine (horrid job!), nipped out into my spares stash and found replacement pump. Swift swap out of pump, turn her back on and . . . No pump!

Have checked all the wiring down to it from timer, no breaks but no voltage either. Would I be correct in assuming the worst that the contacts in the timer have burnt out? Please excuse the silly question from an ex appliance engineer but since being ill earlier in the year memory has been badly affected.

Hi Bjorn have you checked the timer with a multimeter ? That machine was the one renovated 2yrs ago and it had a new / old Hoover timer put in it !! [this post was last edited: 12/20/2016-15:46]

It was a brand new timer

if I remember correctly, so considering the relatively small load of the pump compared to say the heater, I'd hope the timer wouldn't be faulty. Also doesn't it pick up a neutral from the heater, could there be a fault there?

Saying that, have I got a different machine in my head? I thought Richard said this machine was leaking and the capacitor had blown at the end of october, so maybe I've got my richards and 3110s mixed up, in which case it may not be the one with the new timer after all.

It was the one that got renovated that I got off Richard. Was it October? Thought it was the summer. See what I mean about my memory now?

I did check round the heater connections but all seemed Ok, and heater was working as laundry was warm. Haven't checked the timer with multimeter yet. Will do tomorrow.

Dis you ever find out what the knocking was? Also how is the machine coping with 3 loads a day? I was using a Logic but with its small drum I thought two loads a day was too much and would kill it in a fairly short time. Maybe I'm wrong...

The knocking noise was on another A3110 I have but Richards came up for sale and it was too good to miss.

She copes well with the work load. There are 5 children under 10 and 2 adults plus a dog living here full time and my daughter comes at weekends. That equals 4 sets of school clothes a day, 7 bed changes every week or so. At the very least it's 3 loads a day but it not uncommon to do 6+.

I did have a 12kg Beko before (which was horrid) and a Miele which is in the shed. I fund it quicker to do 2 loads in the Hoover than do 1 in the Beko, and with better results.

Well, did have a little faux pas.

Typically after few moments of trying to do something the inevitable "DAD" gets yelled. Off I duly trot to wipe one of my little cherubs backsides, with multimeter in shirt pocket. You can guess where that landed can't you?

After a few words not particularly suitable for young ears and a trip to Maplins to purchase new meter, traced the fault to a bad spade connection on the pump. How I didn't spot that yesterday . . .

Anyway, she is now back insitu and running to catch up on the backlog. Probably about 8 loads by looks of it.

Rats! Stopped pumping half way through cycle. Followed wires up to timer and no breaks, reads 0 ohms even jiggling wires. Checked all spade connections, wires up to and beyond heater back up to timer, again all OK. Checked heater resistance which is 22 ohms disconnected just in case as have had odd faults with heater faulty but normally machine also doesn't heat or blows trip. This works fine.

Any other ideas chaps, what have I missed?

Forgot to mention I have spare pump here which I am also trying.

Also, there seems to be 240v (well 237v) supplied to pump when turning on to a part of programme that needs pump.

Update: all working again. Have done about 10+ loads since yesterday and all good. Who would of thought a duff nib pump!

Just seen this post...

Hows things going now? From what I can remember the pump was a newish pump either at renovation or just before. I wonder if the storage in the shed has caused the fitted pump to get some dampness in it causing a bad contact?

Good to hear the machine is going well and coping with the large amounts of washing you have.
