I had one of those Miele dishwashers. It was a G45. It didn't fit in my kitchen because it was wider than a modern dishwasher. I believe it was 67cm wide. I sold it to a guy in Germany who did a full restauration with a lot of Bosch parts. It became his daily driver.
Come on up, there is a G45 in my garage. And a Dishmaster - just about. And a SwanMaid ......
Actually I doubt the G45 holds any more than a standard dishwasher (its even wider with the external water softener). The Swanmaid is very closely based on early model US Kitchenaid dishwashers
In this thread are pictures of the G45 after restauration by the then new owner. In that thread is also a link to a thread with more detailed pictures from the time it was in my shed.
Saw the mention of Swanmaid, I have this sales leaflet and manual for the Swanmaid Standard and De Luxe, got a load of technical literature for them and a service manual for a kenwood A1212. WIil scan it all properly another night and share. Chris
Also got this brochure with letters for Cygnet dealers back in the day. The letters say ''Manufacturers of Swanmaid Dishwashers' so it would apppear they're related... Hope you can read it. Chris
@servischris I really enjoyed those brochures. Never heard of the Cygnet before. I’d love a look in that Swanmaid instruction manual if you have a chance to scan it some time. Lovely bits of UK dishwasher history there.
First of the scans. And now I remember why I havent scanned anything in years! This is an a4 double sided sheet dated Oct 1971 with information on a new model - the Swanmaid Select.
''The New Swanmaid Select, a development of the popular Swanmaid De Luxe, is modern in appearance and is designed to match and fit under the new metric height working surfaces as well as conventional kitchen units.''
Although I am not British, I have some ads and brochures for UK’s dishwashers and I gladly make a contribution to this interesting thread. I got this one on eBay 4 years ago, the eBayer who sold it claimed it is from 1978.
I’m not a fan of this dishwasher particular loading pattern - it looks pretty inconvenient to me, but I wonder what kind of performance this Kenwood machine provided.
Gone back to taking photographs. This scanner is awful and I don’t know why the quality is so poor on here. Used to be better I’m sure. Hope it’s readable. If all else fails I can email the photos and see if that’s any better. Try this...
Wow absolutely fascinating, I loved reading through those. The baskets of the Kenwood are certainly very different, yet another “reverse rack” concept. And @servischris I really appreciate all the effort to upload all those pages, thank you!!
We had two Swanmaid De Luxe's in my family, but they were an earlier version with a round metal 'on' button - would presume 1960s machines.
Thinking about it, one of the couples got married in 1969 and more than likely had it bought them as a wedding present, along with their Hoover 3221H Automatic washing machine. My uncles parents were the other couple and probably were the purchasers of the gift.
Thanks Chris for posting the info on the Swanmaid products - really has stirred memories of the machines that I had contact with in my youth.
I have attached a colour image of the Swanmaid Select, which looks to almost be an older de Luxe model, but with a 'modern' dishwasher frontage grafted on to it ...
Attached below is the dishwasher report from Ideal Home magazine in 1978.
Contains a bit of info on the reintroduced Swanmaid De Luxe, which I retype below in case its illegible on the page:
'It has been on the UK market since the early fifties, disappeared briefly and has now come back (by popular acclaim it seems) under the marketing control of a new company who offer another version (the Select) with a choice of four programmes and an optional water softener'.
The 'new' company is Cygnet Electrical Co Limited.
Sadly it looks like the report will upload poorly and become pretty much illegible :-(
Welcome to the forum!
many thanks for posting the Kenwood dishwasher brochure - and what a great brochure!
A couple of years ago I was driving to work, which involves driving behind a branch of pretty much our last national, store based electrical retailiers (Currys) and thought I saw one of these Kenwood dishwashers dumped out the back of the store.
It was there for days - thankfully it turned out to be a freezer (or so I was told, though I still have my suspicions), with the narrow control panel of the freezer making it look akin to an A1414 dishwasher from a distance.
Thanks again for posting the brochure
Regards
Paul
There is a Electrolux 500 a hotpoint fl and the Electrolux fridge freezer which is the same model we had in 1972 bought from Bejam's freezer centre no idea what it cost but I was 12 and so excited we had a new fridge as the old gas one was well old.... Such memories of old huh !!
I see from squinting at the uploaded pages, that the Swanmaid recommends 'Hygleam' detergent. The Colston recommends Colston's own. The Indesit recommends 'Finish' or 'Bio Finish', most of the others recommend either 'Sun' or 'Finish'.
But the Electrolux and Kenwood recommend... 'Freedom' detergent!
Confirmation in print at long last, that I didn't dream up 'Freedom' detergent. I'm pretty sure that it was made by Procter & Gamble.
Thank heavens for a bit of sensible information. Modern articles wouldn't go into that depth of info.
Really frustrating that when uploaded, the images degrade.
I promise you that, although photographs, the master images are completely legible.
When the new way of uploading images was introduced a few years ago, the ability to upload good quality, big images was removed (unless I am missing something - if so please tell me!). This is why I generally stopped uploading brochure images and stopped doing full histories threads, cause the visual results didn't make it worthwhile :-(
Anyway, living within the quality limits, I attach the 1979 Ideal Home magazine report.
Thanks for sharing those scans. It looks like Neff was asking a premium price for those relabelled AEG products. The AEG with more programmes is much cheaper than the tested Neff dishwasher.
Although there was the later tie up with Kenwood I am think that Dishmaster was a separate company to begin with as I have an instruction book which makes no mention of Kenwood at all.
Here is a Pathe video with also features a waste disposal, also marketed by Kenwood
It was about 18 months after that posting that I had the pleasure of meeting Richard face to face. He brought down his Electrolux dishwasher (now working) so that Mike and I could see it in action.
Love that video but the way she dropped those trays in she might have well tossed the dishes from across the room like Lisa Douglas used to do!! That looks like it would be a fun machine to play with. Were those automatic or semi-automatic?
