Hoover Tumble Dryer

This morning was the coldest and most icey i have had at work this year, in amomgst the frozen washers etc I found this lovley old Hoover tumble dryer.

It was covered in frost but doesnt appear to be in too bad a condition, whihc is good as it is the matching dryer to the A3110 washer I have

Well done again Gary, but whats Pauls question?.

You'll soon have that looking mint too, but is it a trick of the light, but the drum doesn't look black. Also shouldn't it have a base and a back, being a sealed cabinet design? In fact just looked at photos again and it has the logic drum, so it has some history of repair. And yes Paul I need to go and give the vision dryer back and reclaim the D6096 you and rob bought me. Though I am enjoying the D6042 we've recently restored.

Gary you'll be able to add another you tube vid of the buzzers sounding in sinc. just as you've done with the 1100s.

Lol Paul your records must be almost matching those of the inland revenue, watch out for the data protection inspectors, lol.

I will be interested to see the crease gaurd phase in action as the timer doesn't advance on mine, so I ve not seen that part of the cycle. Though I guess it would be similar to the electron dryers, but without the reverse tumble.

Is It Or Is It Not

Let me just say that this machine is not what either of you think it is, its origins will be revealed later.

Took it to garage plugged it in....Dead.......hmmmm so i started at the plug end of things

Hmm a bit like the 3203 keymatic plug, except the unusual colour (for Hoover) mains lead was in pristine condition

Testing

Checked the motor before i switched it on to make sure it wasnt seized (looks very old fashioned painted that colour)all ok except the drive belt is cracked all over so ill replace that later

I switched it on and.........what a bloody bone shaker!.......christ i have never heard such a noisy machine, it needs a complete service, the extractor fan bearing was dryer than a desert(thought these machines were sealed type without an extractor fan)
So i greased it that stopped the screeching sounds, but plenty of other noises to sort out

I also checked the heating elements they are both working, the extractor fan belt is in good condition

So alike, just plug in and blow up the bloody lot, then start shouting at it because you have to change the fuses or reset the RCD which means the bloody bedside clock will be flashing at you when you go to bed begging to be reset and if it’s anything like mine it a bitch to do so end up pulling the plug on it.

I bet you do the sniff test like I do, dose this smell hot and burnt or the quick touch test to see if you hair stands on end just can’t wait and take the lid off or check the connection first.

The Answers

This machine is a sort of cross over design in some respects, as it shares the older design hot air extraction system (a fan) and the newer type timer with built crease gaurd and an audible end of program buzzer

D6130 (never heard of one)

Ha ha matey yup and yup again.......i stroke the cabinet gently to see of there is any potential on it.......

There was also a fair amount of water dripping out of the machine as all the frost had melted

However i do smell test after it has run for a about 15 seconds to whats burning fluff or plastic ;-) if i blow the RCD it is another garage so i have to go over there get a broom and flip the switch.......bah!

As you can see it has travelled a fair few miles to end up Totnes in Devon it is not unusual to come across smaller eletrical items, these are mainly brought in by forces personel whilst on their travels.

But this is one big item to get in your kit bag ;-)

Yes, the trusty broom handle and the RCD switch, second to the lump hammer in the best tools in the tool kit. Trusty is currently helping the garage door stay open and my head safe.

Nice machine, but made in South Africa, thought all Hoovers where built in the UK.

I never knew Hoover where in South Afrika.......i know Tri-ang had a factory there in the 1960s

Sad but true

it was mine i used to collect Triang railways stuff, that loco was from the late 1960s.

I sold it all about 6 years ago, i was bought a modern hornby loco as a present and it ran soooo much better than my old Triang stuff that i decided to go modern, i miss the old rattly triang stuff...........but the new stuff is miles better

now then, Hoover and Triang were both producing gear in South Afrika when apartheid was still going the naughty lot, mind so were all the banks etc.......

A South African machine - does everything that the UK built D6096 does, but with a different colour interior.

D6130 has definitely never been mentioned in any of the paperwork I have seen and I am relaxed that it was never sold over here. Phew.

Its interesting finding info about foreign versions of our machines.
In Italy the A3008 Keymatic is a cold fill only machine, called the 'De Luxe', with the model number A2026!
Our UK model A3006, was also cold fill only and was model number A2024 and boasted a chrome door!

In Sweden they had a square button electron with, what looks like, a variable temperature slide and then there are the three thumbwheel equipped Logics in France and Germany.

God knows where all these non-UK sold variations were built, whether they were built at Merthyr and exported, or built under licence as per your D6130.

Good find and, even though its not a UK D6096, it will definitely feel at home with your A3110, I am sure.

I had three Em2's electra Aurora and the electric blue test one (cant remember the name). oh christ i know i should put maroon mk1's but it is triang yah know ;-)

It is amazing that these two machines built thousands of miles apart match so well, I wonder what Hoover did have over there, a Complete manufacturing plant or just an assembly plant.

I did wonder if the model number would mess up your system ;-)

I thought at first it was written in German when i glanced at the ratings plate.........

I am glad to have found it though it sort of completes my 1100 matching dryer sets now.

You had an AL1 (I knew tham as class 81) too!

Saw most of those up and down the West Coast Main Line. The majority of the class were scrapped at Coopers Metals Sheffield. One survives though (E3003 later 81002) and I am a member of the preserving society.

Back to the dryer...

am not letting it mess up mys system, for I am still satisfied that they were never sold over here.

Model numbers A2014, A2016 and A2022 - dont get me started on those:-(

Wondering whether a totally seperate company simply bought the rights to produce the machines under licence, rather than Hoover having plant out there?
