Hotpoint 18680 Door Seal Change ( HELP WITH RUST )

Well I have striped down the 18680 and on pulling off the front for the door seal I was confronted with some terrible rust, sham as it’s the only bad patch.

Dose any one have any suggestion on where to go with this, I thought of taking the front panel to a car body shop to see how much it would cost to have it treated and re-sprayed.

As for the weight problem I will have to invest in some spanners has I don’t have any, it only need tacking off and re fitting, I have noticed that it is a bit dusty, like it is soft and would rub away, any suggestions for this, maybe some varnish or PVA?

The only other thing I can find faulty is the locking unit which works on a cam on the program selector bit like the water disrupter on some models, the plastic slider which engages the push to open button has broken, will have to try and glue that but not too important, just don’t open door with water in the tub, the pecker will stop it opning if the drums is moving.

Tub seems ok.

I can put the £1.25 from the filter to the new spanners, ho and a new drill bit too.

Ah - rust!

Lovely stuff - not!

our 95620 had some rust on the metal lip that can be seen in your first picture. without indulging in a total respray of the panel, the best job possible for the metal was done.

namely sanded the nasty flaky stuff off and sanded back down to sound metal. then a layer of rust protection/prevention paint.
eventually, when the 95620 becomes a workhorse machine again, will finish off with a layer of white enamel paint.

The best we could do at the time, with the resources available to hand.

Seems a shame to have to totally respray the panel of your 18680, as the general paint finish looks still top notch!

oh forgot - the concrete block.

again, back to out 95620.

the top block was shocking, with bits dropping off all over the place.

we did go through the rigmorole (that how you spell it?) of getting a replacement block, only to find it would'nt fit. Hotpoint, in their wisdom changed the shape of the block, so Next Generation concrete doesnt fit New Generation machines.

So back to the old block.....
you mention it yourself - we applied a very liberal couple of layers of PVA glue, which seems to have done the trick. certanly no bits have dropped off the block since and the machine no longer rattles, due to concrete bits rolling about the machine.

and finally.....

you got more cash out of your machine + you got a bloody present in the form of a drill bit!!!!!

all me and rob got from the 95620 was 50p (in the form of 2x20p and 2x5p), a money token, a sticker and a ring pull. Oh and a 1948 shilling (that we couldnt spend). Wouldnt have minded the latter if it was pre-1948, as shillings prior to 1948 have a silver content!

Spend your £1.25 wisely.

Thanks Paul for your input, will use PVA on the block.
I’m not very good with the spray can and want to do the old lady some justice got someone to give me a price to treat and to paint the bad bit.

Found on the Hotpoint spares web site that plastic slider which locks the door release push button, so going to order one only £2.50, also has listed on a 7 day order the front panel £57.00 bet that wont be available even if I tried, seems to be quite a few parts still available for this model.

Going to have a go at the paint job after all

Well I have be quoted £50 to re-spray the front panel including a full paint match so I have decided to have a go my self and if it turns out a bad job I will get the professional to do it.

Can’t be that hard, some rust remover gel, then a good sanding, some metal primer for galvanised steel and then a can of white appliance spray enamel. I will practice on the inside of the panel first to see what the finish will be like!!!!

Noticed also that the timer on the 18680 has a thermal stop device, but it works in reverse to the one on the 95622 in as much as the 18680 coil is only activated when the main cam barrel is to be advanced, where has on the 95622 the coil is activated to stop the main cam advance. Sad that I no the programs off like this !!

Also invested in those spanners today, so a long weekend of work ahead. Can’t wait, I’ve loads of washing to try in the old lady.
