Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

6+Economy = Quick wash

Yes, the red one's do correspond to the Option buttons - Prog 6 is a 40C cycle, however selecting Half load, the machine activates the Quick wash, no heat cycle.
The Pre-wash is just red for some reason, the only reason I can think of is it is to warn you it's not a complete wash cycle, or it was in place for machines with Auto Pre-wash option?

On My WM31 the Fabric softener compartment is flimsy too, but they all are, it's just the way they were designed.

It does Look like the door glass has been changed from the Bowl to the Aquarius model door glasses. I also think it has the wrong drum? This one is 5KG, 50l, the one which may have came with the machine is a 46l one, no holes in the paddle - larger rim next to the rubber. Still at least with this one you will get slightly more power due to the holes in the paddles, there is better showering of the load.

Excellent result George though, bet you are really happy. Looks immaculate, and I hope your sealant works.

good machine there, glad it's fouctioning alright again. As for the drum and glass design, this model must of been made in 1990, when they 1st appeared on the Hottie's. If u take a pic on the sticker at the back of the machine, I can work out when it was made by the first or last 2 digits in the serial number, for example, the last 2 digits being 95 would of been made in November 1977 or the first 2 digits being made in November 1985, so I have a good idea as to when this was made lol :)

After looking at it again - I can now see the drum has a large rim, and is 46l. It was specifically designed for later machines, such as 1990, as miele4life says, just before the 5KG models launched with the smaller rim.

Just a heads up .....

Before you use the machine for a complete cycle you may want to turn the fabric conditioner compartment around so the syphon tubes at the back, You will find it drains better :)

They are quite a bit different to the 18 series. For one thing they have a removable lid, far more sensible! They still have the GEC type motor mounted at the top but the tub is plastic, not metal. If I recall correctly, the 18 series had 3 bottom suspension units whereas the later models only had 2. Actually the washer dryers did retain the metal tubs for a few years before they too went to plastic. On the plastic tub the front comes off and is held on with clips, on the 18 series the back of the tub came off and was held with bolts, similar to the Hoover Logic setup.

Lovely machine!

I'm so happy that we are now two very proud owners of two examples in great condition of the famous model! I hope you enjoy using yours as much as I do mine!

Your's is a later model from 89/90, your module is on the top with a later style timer whereas mine has the module at the bottom with the earlier timer, your drum is also original it just has the later style rear. I'm not sure about the syphon tube but I think that style did come into production at that time too.

Nice to see the sticker on yours and to see that your sidestrips are intact, mine has a chip on the left one and I also chipped the door handle on mine but super glue fixed that on again. You could fix it too if you had the chipped bit.

Nice

Although ours is in storage at the moment, you do have to admire the simplicity and functionality of the programming and controls, and also how they could build something so flimsy from the outside (as you have discovered with how easily the plastics break and I'm sure will have noticed how much the cabinet bends and reverberates on spin!).

Luckily the door catch and lid trim is still available as a spare part if you look online, but it really can't be stressed how fragile they are!

As has been said before that is not the drum from the aquarius models, there are no holes in the paddles and it still has the thicker rim, just has the newer back and door glass, making it a late production run (again as has been said above).

I gather it also has the later style (unfortunately far more repair prone) interlock, by the lack of the unique buzzing noise when it's draining in your video.

Just to correct some of the above information, the later style "5kg" Aquarius style drum had a 45l volume not 50, I'm not sure of the exact capacity of the earlier drum, but naturally it's less than 46l.

Here's our 9530 on the day Marc collected it, aside from some adjustments to the belt and currently needing new brushes we've been extremely lucky, mechanically and cosmetically it's immaculate and all original; not bad for 25 years old! :)

Have also attached a link to the replacement door catch, and will post a link to replacement lid trims.

sorry hoover1100 if i provided false information... but...

Hotpoint told me directly the drum was 50l on the newer model's, when asking about my drum on My WM31. Why The drum develop some bumps around the paddles a few years back. Nothing to worry about though, no harm has been done in the 2 years they have been there. I was just asking Hotpoint what drum I should replace it with - the man on the phone to my dad on speaker phone, immediately said the WM31 drum is 50l and is available for immediate delivery. However with his knowledge ensured us the drum was not going to brake, and that bumps in this stainless steel was normal.

I have even been told by other people on this site the drum is 50l.
But mistakes happen, maybe you correct it is 45l/46l. Maybe no one is correct and it is 48l, or 52l. In fact I am now so curious to know, I am going to now experiment in future, with a large plastic sheet, and some water.

glenfield... thanks for the reply and filling me in on what they do. there are no holes in the paddles, so maybe it is a replacement for this machine just with the newer style?
miele4ever... yeah ok will do
henrypeter21... there are not many differences apart from the outside casing, and jack does not have a 9526 anymore, broke about a year ago.
aussie... cheers austin
supermaticjames... yeah we do aha, and tbh i prefer the newer drum look, but would really like to get my hands on an older door glass. yeah aha but it fell off at the yard i got it from and is lost now.
hoover1100...its a 9517 you have in storage isnt it? and yeah i blooming well have, when i put the fascia back on it cracked behind the dial, but luckily its not visible, and the sides are very very loud on spin. and actually, it does buzz when its draining, but when the waters gone out of the drum it goes like this. so i can tell when its emptied. sounds great when it starts to drain.
cheers for the links will definately look into it as i really want this looking perfect too.
thank you all for your kind replies and help for things i was unsure of.
george!:D

well done

George on completing the repair, I hope your justly proud of yourself, you should be enjoying that machine for many years to come.

I hope you treat yourself to the replacement door handle and whatever strips you need, just to finish the restoration off perfectly.

Matt, thats the model my grandmother replaced the english electric liberator with, it was the first machine I had seen in action spin at 1000 rpm. Yes they may have been thin cabinets, though stronger than what was to follow, (thinking of the creda supaspeeds and later dryers especially) and yet the pannels all came off for ease of repair.

I think its safe to say this series of machines washed for a generation.

Well done

Mathew

Great thread!

We got one of these machines brand new in 1988/89 to replace out 18371 hotty!

I can confirm it had that door glass from new. Perhaps they used those toward then end and on to the later restyled doors.

Ours had one of those drums fitted but we got one with holes in the paddles which turned it into an Aquarius wash system :-p

It didn't cause any problems and it danced around for another 6 years after that.

I'd love to find one to relive those old memories as well as a spin slider models from the same time perood. The countless times it used to lunge out and being 5 or 6 and the dryer being stacked ontop was pretty scary! Also I remember accidentally starting the spin on the wrong part of the dial and it span instantly full of water!!

Drum size in Hotpoint WM / Aquarius range

For those who are wondering about drum size, here's the page from the 1995 brochure where it gives you the specs...

superelectronic++8-3-2012-06-17-22.jpg

Increased capacity did not mean a bigger drum...

The Ultima models apparently had the same size too...despite taking an extra 0.5 kg...

Does anyone have a full brochure with these specs from the 9lb loaders (later range brochures probably did; earlier ones didn't)?

excuse me.

yes philip but did i tell people what it did? i said the red programs have something to do with a button. i suggest you read what i say before you start being funny on my restoration thread.

well..

if you read what i put philip i think youll find that what i said("the ones in red are in connection to one of the option buttons i think? not sure which one though.")
is actually true isnt it? because 6 is red and does have a connection with the buttons. an apology would be nice, you know how much i hate people getting picky and ridiculous about nothing.
