Hotpoint VTD20 Banging

Hi

I am sure most of you know I own a Hotpoint VTD20P vented Tumble dryer - made in GB

As the machine tumbles in clockwise direction the machine is making a banging noise, I have investigated that the front paddle is hitting something below the drum, though when it turns counter-clockwise there is no banging, or very little every now & then.

Please can someone tell me what this banging is-will it effect the drying results, and how can I stop it-lift the lid-check inside?????

The machine dates 2004 btw.

Please do leave comments tell me what it is, and please advise an alternative vented glass door tumble dryer thats not very expensive should this fault be incurable.

Possible bearing or....

Maybe the belt has stretched and the drum catches on the jockey wheel in one direction.

Its worth taking the inspection panel off and shining a light in maybe you can then see whats catching?

My guess is a worn jockey pulley. The build quality of them are just awful.

7 years tho, Optima.....

I'm no modern Hotpoint fan, i think that's pretty evident. However, 7 years for a dryer is pretty decent these days.

Might well be easy to repair but if not i certainly wouldn't feel let down with that lifespan.

As for replacement, i'd probably avoid Hotpoints new range till it's proven itself. Not even sure if theyre see-through doors now either :-/ Beko dryers are hopeless compared to their washers & dishwashers and the doors are solid, and Miele are too expensive i'd imagine!? Hoover/Candy can have see-through doors but i wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.

Therefore i'd look at:

*White Knight (British, simple, cheap)
*Gorenje (good warranty, not too pricey)
*Zanussi (generally dependable, not mega money. Solid door may not suit?)
*Whirlpool (seem fairly well built & some still have see-through doors, but parts pricey)

Bosch might be worth a whirl but it seems their cheap stuff is largely no better than cheaper makes now, and their better stuff is pushing Miele prices, so is pointless aswell. The cheaper stuff friends & family have bought has been a letdown, so i personally wouldnt go near unless it's the same price as one of the above 4.

On the subject of Hotpoint Dryers,

We had a TCL780P Condenser Dryer delivered to us today. I know Hotpoint are on with changing their Dryers but this was a mixed bag of old & new. It had the new wave design lifters in it also the bottom air inlet grill that used to be square was completely different also the rubber seal & the plastic around the porthole was white in colour which has always been grey. It just looked strange. Surely Indesit Company should of made sure enough old model parts were left before putting new model parts on old models.

I think it was just a design upgrade, Bosch & Siemens are always doing it. hence the model/01 or model/05 etc!
I think that Indesit still have a smooth drum, as the new aquarius dryers do have smooth drums.

I can confirm to FL1012 that Hotpoint new Aquarius timer dryers have solid doors, though the sensor ones in Argos also have solid doors, though other shops will have glass doors. (Its so Argos can sell it in their catalog and not just on their website)
Miele are to expensive and they have solid doors, no see through ones.
I might look into Whiteknight, though they don't normally have sensor drying, which is what I like about the VTD20!
Bosch dryers aren't reverser's-so everything tangles from reviews I've read.

7Years is good these days, and I was happy with it, and I mean we will still use it even though its banging.
I'll have to go for a look!

My non-reversing BSH dryer doesn't tangle much at all. Only the occasional instance of bedding rolling up in a ball, and to be honest nothing worse than the previous Electrolux dryer which did reverse.

White Knight....

White Knight now offer sensor dryers (both vented and condensor), and from looking at their website (link below) are about to start selling (if they havn't already) ones with digital displays aswell. Look abit old school compared to the likes of Hotpoint, but it's quite a nice feeling buying British and they're usually keenly-priced.

Whilst i'd probably go for a timed dryer as i've never found a sensor one that worked how i wanted it to and i do wonder how good White Knight Sensors are, theyre dryers do seem largely dependable for most people and whilst some makes are better, for the price they seem to last well.

Bearings Collapsed

On Monday 5th September the Bearings collapsed-the drum fell down.
On Saturday 10th September a Hotpoint TVF770P arrived, and must say it dries very well, Cupboard dry, ready to wear (Very Dry) & Bed + Bath-Yet to try Delicates cycle.
The Hanger dry did leave a few collars On shirts a little damp, so a Quick blast on 20 minute high heat and they were dry.

Its a very good dryer, and made in GB just like the old one!
