House full of original avocado appliances

Hello all,

I recently bought a 1970 house with all manner of well preserved appliances and fixtures. I just created a flickr page for it here:

I had come across this page and forum in the past, but I figured now I should log in now and say hello...I may well need advise on getting parts for some of these things in the future. My next appliance project is to find the leak in the hot water fill hose on the side of the dishwasher...at least it's not the pump leaking.

Nice place! The Westy refrigerators of that era were usually pretty reliable, don't know much about the DW.

Curious as to the cabinet along side the DW with the vertical dividers. Would that be for storage of baking sheets?

Ken, I'm pretty sure baking sheets, pizza pans, etc. are what those dividers are for.  My dad rigged up something similar in the pantry for such items.

 

I can't say for sure, but someone here will know if that dishwasher is a true Thermador or if it's a Waste King clone.  If it's the latter, prepare to be impressed with how well it dries, and depressed over how poorly it washes.

 

Great house!  About a year ago I rescued some light fixtures out of a place of similar vintage, however the bathroom pendants were just too hideous even for me, so I left those behind.

 

I'm sure an avocado wall oven will come along at some point to replace the modern black thing that's there now.

Julia Child Wall Oven

I think your wall oven is the same (or similar) to the ones used by Julia Child in the 1970's version of The French Chef television show. Turn on Julia Child and take a peek at her ovens.
Also, if the house is 1970's vintage, it is quite important to determine now if you have aluminum wiring within the walls. It can be properly maintained but it MUST be done by an expert!

You both are right about the dividers being for baking pan storage.  My mom has them in her kitchen as well, and it really is a nice feature to have.

Our last house had a kitchenful of avcacado appliances. We were thinking about having them repainted by a local shop that does that kind of work using an epoxy paint, but never got around to it.

It may just be me, but with avacado surfaces never looked as clean as white or Stainless does. And it certainly darkens the kitchen. But if the appliances work and do a good job, why not?

I think avocado is making a comeback of sorts, just under a different name.  We weren't even thinking about it and ended up with an avocado shade of paint in our kitchen, but there's very little of it since cabinetry takes up all but about 18" worth of wall space at the top, and walls by the stove and doorways amount to just a few square feet.

 

We had existing wallpaper in the breakfast room that had to be matched.  It was installed beautifully by a pro and was left over from a movie my sister had worked on, so we kept it.

 

Then when the master bath conversion was completed back in May, we ended up with an avocado shade in there too.  I wanted to change it to a more earthy sage green while we had the chance but Dave gave it a veto, so avocado it is.   Since I designed and supervised the remodel, I let him choose the paint.

 

I'd much prefer avocado appliances over coppertone.  For me, with only a couple of specific exceptions, coppertone darkens a kitchen and never looks clean.

the 5th little burner on the stove....

that is so cute!!! i have never seen a small burner like that added to a stove. i really like that.

as for avocado making a comeback, i agree. my sister & her fiance' had their house built and they were going for the new earthtones in the colorscheme and they ended up painting their kitchen a darker avocado green.

for me, it's been pretty easy to match vintage to her kitchen. i bought her a sunbeam mixmaster cuz she liked mine so much. she was complaining that her little mixer had burned out, the last time she used it to make christmas cookies. so, i bought her one in "harvest gold". but i gave her the choice of the harvest gold or my avocado green one. and to my surprise, she wanted the avocado green sunbeam mixmaster cuz it went with her kitchen.

although i tried to get her a set of avocado green tupperware canisters to go with her kitchen, but she didn't want those. i guess i could only push so much "vintage" on her.
hm hm hm........

Thanks all for the replies. I guess I know what the vertical separations in the cabinet are for...I can't image someone doing that much baking that they would need that!

The Fedders system includes original condesor and air handler. Crossing my fingers it keeps going for now.

I hope avocado is making a comeback...inasmuch as I hope it won't be a liability when I sell the house. I will say I don't care for it in the Kitchen sink as always looks dirty.

The Sears Kenmore Dryer I already had. The model number is 6817800A10. Anyone know what model it's companion would be?

Oh, and I did look up the Julia Child reference...it looks here like she did use a Thermador oven similair to mine:

You might find that the baking sheet cabinet is more handy than you currently think.  I use mine to store things like broiler pans, pizza pans, wire racks, etc., not just cookie sheets.
