HOW ABOUT THIS NUTTY PRODUCT?

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support AutomaticWasher.org:

The RCA Victor Hi-Fi that my Dad bought for the family in 1956 received FM broadcasting, but Stereo was an option that required a separate speaker cabinet, which like John’s family we didn’t have. But there was a switch over the tuner that was surrounded by a brass plate with a button to press for Stereo, which of course didn’t work without the extra stereo speaker.

And our ‘63 Chevrolet Impala had an AM/FM radio.

Eddie
Back then, in 1956, the only true stereo that RCA you mentioned could produce was from reel-ro-reel tapes that were a new product, and eventually RCA came out with the tape cartridge format.
So even if you had the seperate speaker system, unless you also had the tape recorder, you'd only hear mono sound from mono records.

My dad had a maroon 1963 Chevrolet Impala 2 door hardtop which was severely hit in the rear by a truck in late 1968 (Dad was unhurt which was very fortunate). Was time for a new car. He didn’t like the look of the 1969 Impalas. Then he saw the redesigned for 1969 Mercury Marquis (hidden headlights, full width tail lamps, very classy interior) and he bought one. My mom loved that big ‘69 Marquis and so did our family Scottish Terrier who sat in the backseat but positioned his front paws on the front armrest and was a back seat driver! We really loved that dog and that car.

Here is a YT Video of a 1956 RCA Victor Hi-Fi that is identical to the one that my Dad bought in 1956. Note the two button switch above the tuner for selecting Stereo if so equipped. I vividly recall that we got it the day after Halloween 69 years ago.

Eddie

Here;s another video that shows the stereo switch better. This model is from 1959 but looks the same as the 1956 model above that we had.

I'd love to know what brand//country that toaster was made in.
And did he register a complaint about it?
Because if that were me, I'd be contacting tv stations, the manufacturer, and all hell would hear about it.

Nevertheless, If I'm using any kitchen appliances, I keep my eyes and ears tuned in.
Even a simmering pot of pasta on the stove is no reason to be negligent.
His toaster was a Hamilton Beach, and the outer shell was plastic. It was nearly new, and this happened about 10-15 years ago, so I'm sure it was imported, probably from China. He was only about 15' away when it happened, so was able to attend to it it a timely manner. He unplugged it, and put it out with the sink sprayer. I think there was a recall of those toasters. His new one is metal.

Question for Matt and others, what year did stereo FM broadcast start?

I’m under the impression that when my Magnavox stereo was built, there was no stereo broadcasting or maybe it was so rare that people didn’t want to pay for a stereo equipment which would be useless to them.

I believe this is why the extra chassis was sold as an option, my parents bought a silver tone console stereo around 1963 from Sears, of course and on that one, it was also an option that we did not elect to purchase.

My Magnavox came from the factory with the stereo cartridge in the turntable and they got the optional satellite speaker album storage unit as well at the same time so it always played records in stereo.

A toaster fire is not something I would worry about much yes it could happen, the real trick is you shouldn’t have anything flammable immediately above or around your toaster and for pete sakes don’t buy a plastic toaster, lol

So I don’t think I would worry much about my toaster, two slices of bread only have so many calories of heat if they catch fire it’s not going to do anything more than make a lot of smoke and burn itself out in about 3 minutes.

Most residential dwellings around here have sprinkler systems anyway, except for some of these older homes, but of course it’s better not to have problems.

John L
It was a cheap plastic toaster, and fortunately didn't set the wood cabinet above on fire, but did scorch the underside and a roll of paper towels in a dispenser mounted to the cabinet over a foot away.

His home is in a condo that was originally apartments, built in 1972. His is on the top floor of a three level building. The building has no sprinklers, except possibly in the boiler and storage areas. There is only one exit from each unit above the first floor, other than the balconies, and those are accessed from the same room as the front door. The bedrooms have small windows that are high on the wall, so not a good fire escape.

I have a Proctor-Silex toaster that I bought in 2005, 20 years ago.
It has an outer plastic "Cool Touch" shell too.
I must have toasted thousands of bread slices in it since 2005, and so far it works fine.

But, going back to my original post, this marketing of small household appliances seems to have gotten utterly rediculous.
And one thing I find quite annoying is the aggressive way they market products and services, among other things these days.
I'm sure others here know what I'm talking about.

And those endless miracle drugs ads are some of the worst!
Drugs for this illness....
Drugs for that illness....
Drugs for everything....
And the funny thing about them is the way they glorify their snake oil garbage.
Along with an endless list of side effects....

"Consult your doctor if...."
"May cause blindness, loss of hair, insomnia, dizziness, digestive issues, diarrhea, joint pain, and thoughts of suicide"

Hell, I have thoughts of suicide every damn time I see one of those commercials!
So.... I gotta hit the Mute button before my brain becomes completely "nutted out".
And those fake doctors, reading a teleprompter or cue card, with a stethoscope hanging around their damn neck and trying to convince you that "it's Doctor Approved", or "Clinically Tested".
Yeah, right!
I ain't puttin' that crap in my body!

The TV drug ads you mention are morally depraved. The pharmaceutical industry is a powerful lobby raking in billions of $ pretending to keep us alive forever with their drugs which in turn create other medical issues which in turn lead us to taking more of these drugs. It’s a never ending cycle of addicting people to drugs and the huge $ profits that are divided among pharmaceutical companies, doctors who get kickbacks for recommending these drugs and politicians who reap the $ benefits of supporting these vile pharmaceutical companies. I suppose a lot of people are afraid to die but I’m not one of them. Personally, I take no drugs and I’m not interested in getting screened, scanned or spammed by doctors and “specialists” so I just live until my time comes and then I’ll kick off this earth and go to a better place.

I can remember TV commercials for Doans pills for back pain, Excedrin and Geritol. As for cars in 1969, I don't think any were ugly. A few were plain looking.
A 69 Caprice had a hidden headlight option. In 72 the Dodge Monaco had them while the others quit offering it.

Yes, Caprice offered hidden headlights as an option for 1969 and I liked the look. My dad preferred the redesigned for 1969 Mercury Marquis with hidden headlights and full width tail lamps. True that Dodge Monaco had hidden headlights standard for 1972 and 1973. Plymouth Fury Gran Coupe and Fury Gran Sedan (not Fury III, II or I) had hidden headlights standard for 1972 then went to exposed headlights on all Fury models for 1973.
Continental Mark series (Mark III, then Mark IV, then Mark V), Lincoln Continental and Mercury Marquis all had hidden headlights standard for 1972 through 1979. Ford LTD Landau (not Brougham or Regular) had hidden headlights standard for 1975-1978. I’m probably not remembering several other hidden headlight, full size cars from the 1960s through mid 1980s. I don’t think hidden headlights were offered by any of the Big Three (GM, Ford, Chrysler) any longer in the 1990s and beyond.

Thanks, John, for reinforcing what I've known for decades!

I've often told my friends that "Once you get on the Merry-Go-Round of Big Pharma you'll never get off of it".
And I've seen the results of those people who bought into that medical bullcrap.
Even the so-called common flu that rears its head every year is part of the Big Pharma Plan.
Because the virus has no wristwatch or calendar, how could it possibly know to attack society the same time every year? - usually in the fall.
Does it wake up from its sleep, and decide to infect the population?
And, conveniently at the same time, the tv ads pop up for getting the so-called flue shots, and other drug remedies.
I see this as a yearly "revenue boost" for Big Pharma, the drugstores, and hospitals.
I also see it as a Mass-Population-Control tool, designed to benefit those behind the scenes who are also greed-driven eccentrics, as you already mentioned.

It's a shame that many in society have been gullible enough to believe in this ongoing scam.
I'm like you, I saw this coming decades ago, I saw what it's done to friends, relatives, neighbors, some of who are no longer here on this planet, or if they are, have been habitually sick, their immune systems weakened.

And here I am, at 72, with the "normal" signs of aging, yet maintaining a decent life for myself without being helped to the grave by anyone.

LOL “doctor recommended”! As I write this I’m smoking a Marlboro cigarette and drinking my second cup of coffee. I’ll sprinkle salt on my lunch and have a piece of sugary Danish cheese ring for desert. I’m pushing 70 and I have no intentions of living like a nun. I take after my father in that way. When my father was elderly his doctor told him to go for this scan and that scan and stop smoking cigarettes, eliminate salt and sugar and no more cheese. My father told my mother he was never going to the doctor again and had no intentions of living like a nun and he lived out his life as he wanted with his cigarettes and salt and cheese.

I would agree that many of the TV commercials for medications are over the top. The list of potential side effects are harrowing, leading one to think that if they weren’t sick before taking this medication they very well may be after taking it. These disclaimers are necessary because of the litigious society that we live in where so many are looking for a payday.

But as far as the Flu goes it is scientifically proven to be seasonal world wide, with every global region having a different time of the year that is designated as Flu season. See the Wikipedia link below:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flu_season

So called “Big Pharma” has been responsible for the eradication of many diseases for many decades. I’m old enough to remember well the kids that were paralyzed or died from Polio. With the advent of the Salk Polio vaccine in 1953 and the wide spread administration of this vaccine beginning in 1955 this horrible disease was wiped out in America. When I was 5 years old, two doors down from our home the bay window in the front of that house had an Iron Lung in the living room, the only room in that home large enough for this life saving device for their son who was paralyzed from the neck down from Polio.

In the early 1930’s my Mom’s family lived in Cullison, Kansas a town with about 250 population at that time. An epidemic of Scarlet Fever killed off 50% of the population and all the able bodied men in town had to dig the graves to bury the dead. My Aunt Virginia who was 12 at the time was never able to see again without glasses after having Scarlet Fever. Grandma and her four daughters were quarantined and Grandpa, who miraculously didn’t get Scarlet Fever had to pass food through a window so they could eat. Because of the development of Penicillin diseases like Scarlet Fever and other strep infections were no longer the cause of thousands of deaths every year. I had Rheumatic Fever at age 6 and Penicillin and Sulfa drugs saved my life. I was told in my teens that because of the heart murmur that I was left with I probably wouldn’t live beyond age 35. Well I’m 3 mo shy of 75 and still going strong. Antibiotics developed by “Big Pharma” have allowed me to live a long and healthy life. At age 31 my heart murmur mysteriously dissapeared and never returned.

I retired 20 years ago and haven’t been ill with a cold, flu or sinus infection since then because I’m no longer exposed daily to hundreds of people with illnesses in a building with a closed air circulation system, knock on wood! But I always get an annual flu vaccination and with the Covid Pandemic I’ve kept current on my Covid vaccinations too. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I only go to the doctor once a year for an annual physical exam.

“Big Pharma” has saved countless lives and improved the quality of lives with medications like Insulin that keep diabetics alive. Before Insulin diabetics died painful and early deaths.

So, if you choose to not avail yourselves of the scientific benefits of “Big Pharma” thats your business. But failing to vaccinate your children and allowing childhood illnesses like Measles that had been all but eradicated because smart parents for decades had their children vaccinated, but in many places children are no longer being vaccinated and spreading the disease to others is socially irresponsible.

We’ve known for decades that vaccinations can save lives and improve the health of the general population. What a shame that so many are turning back the clock to a time when these illnesses weren’t preventable because of their mistrust of medical science.

So Matt, you don't believe in daily fiber, even though it is "Doctor Recommended"?
Bob, really!..... using a "for instance" question like that?

That fact was introduced decades ago, when recommended health benefits were real, were validated.
Even in 1959 my mom used to say "Eat your veggies, they're good for you".
And my kindergarden teacher would "suggest" that greens were needed in your diet.

Eddie, that wikipedia link is propoganda to convince the masses - likely paid for and posted by some Big Pharma executive.
Because they've gained enormous power over everything concerning health.
The slow "conditioning" over time of the public is the key to making things like that seem viable and truthful.

Do you honestly believe everything that you read on the internet and take it as Fact?
Come on now!

And those early afflictions like Polio, Measles, etc, they were indeed something to validate and treat - but that was "back then" when actual medicines were not greed-driven, population-fearing nonsense, as many are today.

As far as the yearly Flu and it's yearly vaccine, which has risen only in the recent decades, which tipped me off to the beginnings of Pharmaceutical Greed, it was brought to my attention by a friend who works at the Pentagon, and had inside info about why it came about.
So I firmly hold my stance about it being another generated revenue bunch of crap.
You do or believe whatever you like, as will I.

I am not a fan of most doctors (and most veterinarians but that’s another story) from quite a few bad experiences my family has had with them. My aunt had throat cancer and I can’t begin to tell you of the torture she endured from surgeries and drugs that made no positive difference and her life ended within a year of the “treatments” and my mother had clavicle cancer and after two years of chemo drugs I put the doctor on the spot and asked is she getting better on chemo drugs or not? The snippy, well dressed doctor flipped through a chart and said no, she’s not getting any better, you should get her final affairs in order. It was heartbreaking that I had to tell my mother because the doctor didn’t have the decency to tell her or to take her off worthless chemo drugs. So the doctor was stringing my mother along and doing it for the money (of which I found more than $100,000 in Medicare receipts for chemo drugs). My mother then lived for a short while without chemo but shot a blood clot to the brain which paramedics told me is instantly fatal and painless and a doctor later said that shooting a fatal blood clot may be attributed to cumulative side effects of chemo drugs. My opinion became that the doctors who treated my aunt and my mother were very interested in billing Medicare for enormous amounts of money for medical treatments that were torturous and useless. I do agree however that the Polio and measles vaccines that we all had as kids were useful but I have great suspicions of the medical and pharmaceutical industries as a whole.

LOL!...... Amazing!
I'm ALSO sitting here with my 2nd mug of coffee..... AND smoking a Pall Mall!
At 72, I have no breathing problems, no high blood pressure issues, my mind is clear, and actually surprises my younger friends.
Just the other day, a neighbor that I havn't seen in several years was surprised when her and her husband saw me out headed for the store.
First words out of her mouth was "Hi Matt!..... you look great!"
I tried to downplay the remark, but she was insistent that I'm holding up so well for my age.

And John, I also will do as I please without listening to propaganda warnings telling me how to live.
When they say "do this"...... I do the opposite!
Embrace the entitled freedom that everyone is born with without fears being put into your brains.

Choices are yours for the making. Smokers pay higher premiums and risk more health problems. You can take your doctor's advice, get second opinions, or ignore it. Research has proven that smokers on average have a shorter life and poorer quality of life than healthier eaters and non smokers and lighter drinkers of alcohol. Some things are genetic and hereditary. Other's are preventable with lifestyle. Exercise, good sleep, diet, socializing, moderate enjoyment of alcohol and foods higher in fats, cholesterol, preservatives, sodium and sugars.

Yes indeed, it always seems to point to MONEY anymore, instead of what USED to be honest medical care.
That's another reason that odd, suspicious new illnesses have come onto the scene, to keep that influx of infected people heading to the hospitals and doctors.
When I was in my teens and 20's, is was somewhat of a "believer" in medicine.
But I'm learned a lot since then.

To hell with "research" - to me it's just more propaganda to make the masses believe, and convince them to follow.
I just don't take things for Face Value, sorry, there's too much corruption out there today.

However, yes, hereditary illnesses can show up down the family tree.

Matt,
I don’t believe everything I read online, most especially the crap you have to say. You are insulting to anyone that disagrees with your take on things.

If you had bothered to read the Wikipedia link on Seasonal Flu you’d have realized that the information was based upon historical records and scientific studies, not just on opinion like the propaganda that you believe. For cryin’ out loud to say that you don’t believe in research is one of the most ignorant statements you’ve made.

I don’t believe in blocking members, but from now on I won’t bother reading anything that you have to say.
