I have to dog-sit my sister's boyfriends dog this coming weekend. How do you pet owners wash their food & water dishes, in the dw or by hand? Do you use any special detergents or methods? I've never had to watch someones pet and don't want to screw up. if at all possible. Thanks guys for any help.

Our dogs food bowls go through the dishwasher with the rest of the crockery....

Water bowls I wash by hand with normal dish liquid. Rinse very well. I only do this because it takes 5 minutes and the dishwasher takes an hour.

I always washed both water & food dishes by hand, with regular dish soap and well rinsed, but have not had a pet for a while now.....

anything

that gets washed in my house goes in the dishwasher. usually put the dog bowls in the bottom rack but it's not a rule.

By hand....

I would run them through the d/w, but ms. anal annie who lives here doesnt approve of putting much in there

Both

The food bowls go through the dishwasher, and the water bowls I usually wash by hand, but sometimes they go through the dishwasher too.

Don't have a dishwasher...

so the bowls go in the sink to be washed by hand, after everything else has been washed and dried. I use fresh kitchen linens every day, so I don't worry too much about "dog spit" all over them. I keep a clean sink too, so don't mind the bowls in the sink all that much.

We put all of our dogs water bowl and food bowls into the dishwasher bottom rack and set it to "Sanitize" daily along with our dishes.
Nothing could survive that mode. When you open the door when the cycle completes enough steam comes out to fog up most of the kitchen!

Three dogs here;

If there is room they go in the dishwasher, otherwise they get washed up with larger pots and pans that I don't put in.

In the DW

Norman's dinner bowls go in the dishwasher, but his waterdish is not DW safe, so that is by hand. If you are not sure, and it is not yours, I would not do it.

IMHO

Wanna be safe? Wash them by hand with the same care you'd give your own dishes if washing by hand (clean all corners, etc., and rinse well). I'd avoid anything that leaves any residue.

Water dish, probably every other day. Same with the food dish if it's dry food. Wet food = wash after each feeding. Moist (i.e.- Moist and Meaty) = every day.

Fred's bowls are stainless steel so they go in the bottom rack of the dishwasher. I feed him Blue Buffalo dog food and have to give him some pumpkin for added roughage. His red fleece coat ends up in the ABC too. How we spoil our pets! lol have fun, Gary

Sorry, couldn't resist including a shot of Korky!!

His bowls are stainless steel and go in the dishwasher like the people dishes. He only wishes he had access to all that people food in the fridge!!

His sofa blankets are washed in a Frigidaire 2140 once a week or so.

Oh how cute!

Friends of ours have a rottweiler-pit mix and a rottweiler-doggie mix, a chihuahua, four cats and various other foor-footed family members.

Everything gets washed in the dishwasher or the washing machine.

The chihuahua is the only dawg in the family with a bad temper.

Wonder why that is...

Korky is Rhodesian Ridgeback mixed with "we don't know what". He behaves like a Ridgeback, in that:

1. He's a terrible guard dog, to him all human are potential treat-bearers and attention-lavishers. He is as affectionate toward strangers as he is to me.

2. He's killed coyotes, bobcats, raccoons, possums, rats, etc....which is what Ridgebacks in Africa do: they rid the farm of nuisance animals.

3. He completely ignores ducks and chickens. They are beneficial farm animals so he ignores them.

4. Cats are a problem. Ridgebacks hunt lions in packs, and unfortunately he thinks cats are baby lions. I've been told they are ok around cats if raised together, but they still go after unknown cats. Just instinct.

5. He will bark if he hears a strange noise, a doorbell, or knock on the door. However, as soon as he sees it's a human, he's quite friendly. When he does bark, it's worth checking out because he's quite selective about barking.

Bosch

I now have 5 cats, I found little Tabitha kittie the other night. EVERYTHING goes thru my Bosch, but it melts many types of plastics, esp. peanut butter jars......Bill in Az....

likewise a Bosch

Korky's bowls are stainless steel so not an issue.

I know what you mean about plastics, though. Sometimes I like to save those square-ish jars with screw top lids, the kind you get at Costco (e.g Jelly Bellys, nuts, etc) when you buy two pounds sizes. THey are nice for storing coffee beans, rice, or other perishables. However, even on Regular wash (140 F rinse), it's enough to warp the plastic. Probably they would do ok on Quick Wash (105 F).
