how good or bad is your washer ?

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

AEG

AEG L14850 washer dryer here.

Good points:
- exceptionally quiet washing
- not too noisy spinning
- build quality generally seems ok
- spin balancing is fairly good

Bad points:
- exceptionally poor rinsing caused by bad programming (see below)
- machine vibrates and moves to the right across floor when spinning (others mention this in reviews online too)
- when spinning around 1000rpm the tub and cabinet vibrate and rattle, even on a balanced spin; better as it gets faster
- soap dispenser drawer gets mouldy quickly (common AEG/Zanussi fault)
- noisy when drying as pump runs continously
- recirculation jet does not seem to work as well as it did on previous Zanussi WJD1665 (?) I had

Biggest bugbear with this machine is the awful rinsing, caused by the most daft programming I've seen (happy to be corrected if there is a valid reason why AEG did this). On easy care (synthetics) programmes, the interim spins are only at about 400rpm and last about 2 seconds. Worse, the pump cuts out as soon as the drum reaches speed, so no water is actually extracted from the machine as it's all over too quickly. Machine then fills for next rinse. Not all rinses even have an interim spin! As it uses very little water, by the last rinse, the water is often as sudsy, if not more so, than the wash water was! The recirculation jet doesn't help in this respect either.

Whirlpool

American Whirlpool Duet WFW9750WW01
The Good:
•Great washing on nearly all cycles.
•Some very gentle cycles (normal, bulky, handwash, silk, wool)
•Low water consumption (compared to american top loaders)
•Extra rinse (3) and Max rinse (4) options
•Oxi dispense option. Boosts water level with selected water temp towards the end of the wash.
•FanFresh option. This is worth it in its self.

The "Okay"
•rinsing on normal cycle
•no perfect cycle for towels
•Sanitize cycles
•Deep Clean or Steam.

The bad
•The noise and vibration due to the pedestal. Other Duets similar or like mine without pedestals are perfectly fine
•Long running cycles do to the balance issues due to the pedestal.
•Handwash cycle isn't long enough in the wash cycle. Wool and Silk are the exact same.

All in all, the pros far outweighs the cons. It has been flawless for the past 3 years of abuse in my household.

Miele

W5741

Good:
- Washing performance, with correct cycle, detergent and temperature
- Water consumption
- Ability to select extra rinses, pre-wash and soak
- Reduced agitation profiles (very gentle). Used for washing underwear/socks, garments lasting at least triple what they have in the past
- Seems very study
- Internal water heater
- Able to select boiling temperature
- Noise at 1400rpm is acceptable. Normal kitchen conversation can occur with this happening.

Okay/Adequate:
- Rinsing. Always used with extra rinse (softened water), so we can use enough detergent

Inadequate:
- Spin logic.
For WHATEVER reason, Miele's engineers couldn't work out that trying your damn hardest to get the load up to 1000rpm (or more) very quickly when washing a full load of ANYTHING (especially cotton towels) will overload the drain pump with suds, and cause a water or suds lock. The machine then gets pissy claiming we used too much detergent on some cycles (even though the locking event was only a ridiculous amount of excess water building up). We've even tried selecting 400rpm spin just to stop it from doing this. Nope.

My Kenmore 90 Series:

What I like:

Lots of temperatures, extra rinse, variable water level and speeds! It's big on capacity! Plenty of parts and qualified service people to make necessary repairs (maybe I can DIY)! It works!

What I don't like:

Probably not very water-efficient... Color is in Boring WHITE! For something so hi-up in the model-series, why No Detergent Dispenser or Fabric Softener Dispenser?!

Asko WM80

The Good--

18 years and counting....

Great Swedish reliability like the old Volvos

Stainless inner and outer drums

Never had a mold or odor problem

4 rinses automatically built into a regular cycle

Hot temp boost

All mechanical

No rubber front boot/bellows seal

Actually will fill up to almost half the door glass if I want it to

Haven't found many things that didn't come clean

Only 4 repairs in 18 years....motor replaced at 8 years and again a month or so ago at 10 years and a drain pump at 8 years because something got caught in it, and a new belt last year

We hope it will run forever

The bad...

it's noisy during spin

it won't spin beyond 1000rpm

My 1981 Hoover 1100

Though my machine is 34 years old I have only had it as a daily driver for 2 ½ years now, it has given faultless service with perfect washing and rinsing results of which my 3 previous machines could not compete with.

LIKES
Consistent results every time

Short wash times

Practical programs

It achieves the recommended wash temperatures

Powerful fast heater

Hot and cold fill

Quiet pump

No need to use expensive powders or additives (other than household soap for spot stains)

Nice clicky whurry ticketty timer

Good wash action with a powerful motor

Conservative load rating

Totally user serviceable

Made 250 miles from where I live by British workers who had the normal workers rights and privileges

Passed its “ECO” test as a result of not being disposable in terms of its build quality.

DISLIKES
Can be noisy on an unbalanced spin

GE Harmony

Pros:

* Lots of cycle choices and options, including pre-wash, second rinse, and extended spin.
* Heater (takes a long time but that's inevitable with North American electrical wiring).
* Full complement of dispensers, including for pre-wash.
* Long soak cycles possible, up to 8 hours.
* Washes large towels and blankets without difficulty.
* 1000-RPM spin; stuff comes out almost dry.
* Automatic water level actually works. (And there are some cycles which provide a full fill always, for when you need that.)
* Can store user-defined cycles.
* Useful diagnostic functions
* Cool charcoal color and window in lid
* Direct drive means no transmission worries.
* My wife loves it

Cons (none of them really a big deal):

* Some work to keep clean. Needs to be run with a full tub of water and bleach periodically to combat mold. Every few months I have to take the dispenser mechanism completely apart and scrub all the parts with bleach.
* Drain pump is noisy. (Although it's not a big deal for us since the laundry room is away from the living areas.)
* Peculiar notion of "spray rinse" (spin stops, basket rotates slowly while water is dumped, then spin resumes)
* Automatic transfer of cycle info to dryer isn't as useful as it seems. First of all, user-defined cycles don't transfer. Second, on the dryer, for practically every load, after the transfer you have to go back on the dryer and select "more dry", or the load won't get dry.
* Touch screens could have used a "calibrate" function
* Soft suspension looks alarming at the start of spin, and it has gotten softer over the years. Although the machine has never walked, I keep wondering when the day will come that I have to replace the suspension.
* Most of the water valves are inside the backsplash with the electronics. So far it has not caused a problem, but that just doesn't seem like it was a good idea.

Miele W1 - WKF 120 WPS

I'm really getting to like this machine.

The main advantage is that it can do a very effective cottons cycle in an hour.

Pros:
* Excellent build quality. (Stainless steel inner drum and outer tank, cast iron counterbalance weights, excellent shocks, springs, built on a chassis, extremely good quality cabinet finishes that don't rust etc)
* Fast, effective wash cycles.
* Very good wash and rinse results (although default rinse levels are low, but they are programmable).
* Quiet / Near silent - quiet pumps (it has two of them), quiet motor, quite mechanical components.
* Dual coin trap/button trap filters at front. These are self-cleaning other than for large items e.g. coins, buttons, clips etc.
* Very stable (no vibration).
* Respectable load size and you can stuff it very full and it will wash perfectly.
* No nonsense spinning - it just balances quickly and goes.
* Easy to use
* Great features : water meter fill (it knows exactly how many litres it's using and can show you) energy meter (shows you kWh used)
* Powerful recirculation pump and jet.

Cons:
* Powerwash 60 which it is marketed with is really not very good at rinsing! It does ONE fairly aggressive rinse, but it's not enough.
Cotton Wash set at "Short" with "Water Plus" solves this problem and gives you a really very effective wash and lots of rinsing in 61 minutes.
* Default options are all set for quite stingy rinsing, but you can adjust them. It took a day or two to notice this though.
* Quite expensive.
* They dropped the drain filter tube which Miele always had so it now just trickles water down a flap, more like 'lesser' machines.
* Fussier about cycle interruptions than older Mieles - you can press 'start / stop' and select 'add laundry' for the first few minutes of the wash, but after that the door will not open unless you cancel the cycle and start again.
* Requires you to press "Start/Stop" to open the door on some cycles where it has an anti-wrinkle tumble. This isn't intuitive and I've had family members trying to pull the door (very hard!) thinking it was stuck. I think this may be a design error as they've historically had a "door" button to open the door rather than a pull door.

Overall, it's an excellent machine but I think there may be one or two early-adopter minor 'bugs' (well more like minor design oversights like the start/stop button requirement) to be worked out, perhaps in the new software which I might be able to get uploaded onto it if I ask nicely :)

Not allowed to use it in this retirement poorhouse, but still own a 1998 ElectroFrigiWhite FL. Original cost $800. Maintenance cost $0.

Pro:
Clockwork timer, no "digital" jiggerypockery.
800 spin, fast for its day, balances well.
Actually uses water.
4 fill/1 spray rinses, thorough.
4.5 cycle; Prewash, Normal/plus, Permpress, Gentle.
Simple mechanics; brush drive, shaded pole pump, strut & weight suspension (no ring).
Even in humid area, never stunk.

Con, if you'd call it that:
Have to manual soak for heavy soil.
Manual advance from prewash to main, dispenser needs reloading.
800 spin is not 'amazingly dry' like my 1300 twinny is.
Not programmable.
Tap hot and cold; no thermo or heater.

All somewhat irrelevant, unless you wanted to buy* it. "Progress" has largely robbed us of simple/functional/reliable choices.

*I'd let it go for a song but shipping would kill us unless you're close enough to truck it yourself.

Brastemp Duet Black - same as Maytag Epic on USA

Pros

- Long cycles for heavy soiled
- Lots of water on rinse (when the washer detects suds or large load)
- Daily cycle is very efficient and fast
- Sanitizing is wonderfoul for whites
- Internal Heating
- Automatic Soak on some programs
- Delicate with high water
- Spins very well and fast (more than 1000 rpms)
- In general the washer needs short time to balance
- 7 years from heavy use and no repairs

Cons

- No pre wash
- Fast cycle is too short on wash phase
- Delicates has no soak option
- No liquid detergent dispenser

For the machine I use the most in the house, Miele W5780.
Pros:
Heavy
Pretty smooth when running
Logical programming
Weight adjustment for load, seeing as my loads are mixed this makes sure things get washed properly
Doesn't disfigure clothing
leaves washing relatively crease free
Handles an unbalanced load with ease
Washing comes out fairly dry

Cons:
Longish cycles unless Short or Automatic plus is used.
Sometimes due to my mothers love of using too much powder it leaves darks with whitish marks on them (but hasn't done so recently *she says touching wood*)
The detergent drawer is a pain to keep clean
Sometimes it squashes my dosing bubble thingies for liquid detergent
No time remaining on the display!

This is the machine I use a fair amount of time hence why I wrote it.

Out of my machines in the garden I can't really write anything for any of them because I swap which one I use weekly.

Whirlpool AWO/C 7714

Pros:

Great value for money
Uses good amounts of water
6th sense generally spot on
Spins very well, even on 1000rpm (Max is 1400)
Cleans very well
Isn't fussy with balancing
Isn't a crap washer dryer like the previous Caple.

Cons:
Suicidal with balancing, doesn't rebalance until it's already spun so often I have to stop it from doing damage (on Sunday towels went into a ball, causing the machine to come out under the worktop and move across the kitchen, a lot of banging but no damage to the machine!)
Sometimes it undersenses.
Motor is screechy on a boil wash.

But overall I like it, but I would like to get a bosch at some point.

Miele W562:

Pro's -
Reliable
Excellent wash results everytime
Adjusts water levels and wash time according to the load

Con's -
Only does 2 rinses as standard on cottons. I have to use water plus a lot
Can be loud on the spin

GE Hydrowave (2014)

Really nice affordable washer. I have the BOL version but it has everything I need. Fast wash times, cleans well, and still very old school. I would like a 2nd rinse option, which is available on the higher end models, but very easy to just do another rinse. Dry times are excellent too, even though it doesn't spin as fast as some other models…still spins faster than older washers. Drain is a bit noisy, but agitation is very quiet.

Here is my daily driver set...

The Admiralpool Washer (Whirlpool Direct Drive), very BOL, and my BOL Frigidaire dryer.

I have had the dryer for 8 years no issues, and the washer for 5 years no problems. They have nothing extra, but they produce clean and dry clothes with minimal fuss.

I have the same GE washer that Joeypete has in reply #16 and it is great! Never has given me one problem in over 2 1/2 yrs. of service. I do an average of 4 to 5 loads a week. It has a very large capacity, I could probably get by on 2 to 3 loads a week if I didn't sort the whites. I always use the Power Rinse option and it gives a full fill rinse. Also, there is no ATC, hot gets you tap hot water and I wash most loads on hot. I have never had an issue of suds left after the cycle is complete. I sometimes feel guilty that it uses so much water when we are in the middle of a drought, but I just conserve in other ways. I always use the longest cycle time and still always complete a load in 45 to 50 min. The campanion dryer is the bet I've ever owned, and I've pretty much had TOL models before, but this one is hands down the best. When a load is complete there are never any damp spots, the clothes are all dry and lint free. This set was really the best bang for the buck I could ask for.
