I have my AC going-put it on about 2 weeks ago-humidity climbing.And last week had to put it in heat pump mode becuase the outside temp that night went into the 40's.The weather this spring here has beeen weird.
How hot does it have to get......

It was hot as heck on Saturday in Connecticut-- then it started hailing like the devil.
These new micro-climactic eposides sure are weird.
The sun and and ranin both alternated about 6 times in two hours.
Load of whites on the Gadget's clothesline were soaked!

~For me anything above 70 degrees calls for the air conditioner to be on set at 63 degrees.

The astrological "fire" signs, Aries, Leo and ? are forever "burning up" and feel heat where others don't. Meaning they don't like or tolerate heat. Often these signs need to have a window open or a fan on, in that the belief that air is moving comforts them.
I, on the other hand, HATE humidity. I was quite comfortable in Arizona (dry heat) at over 100*F (say 38*C +/-) but low humidity.

86°F and yet there's no A/C here: not at home, nor in my car, nor at university... If I wanted it cooler, I'd have to go to the mall :-/

The only person I know in Germany with air-conditioning. Ten months out of the year, my German friends think I, personally, am responsible for global warming.
From late July through the middle of September, they all think my tiny apartment is heaven on earth...(Munich summers hit the mid to high 30's with humidity over 90% at times).

Dan! You are living without a/c in Pleasanton? How do you do it?
No a/c here, we get a good bay breeze every afternoon unless it's a serious heat wave. When things are hot and stagnant we dress less, or not at all, and use the ceiling fan in our bedroom. Usually by 4AM or so it's cool enough that we have to shut it off and pull up the covers. It's a very different situation upstairs, which simply becomes off limits and unlivable during a hot spell.

Heat + Rain + Sune = Steamy, or as I call it MISERABLE!
When I was a small kid my parents had one of those old gray Vornado reversable window fans. They did the same thing. Open one window in each room and have the fan blowing out the kitchen window on full power. It really sucked out the heat and created great airflow. Wonderful for those Chicago hot days and cool nights.
Right now we have a dew point of 72 with a humidity level of 87%! We definitely have the a/c running at 75.
We turn on the a/c at about 80F, or when your feet start to stick to the kitchen floor from the humidity!

Here in my city I use to turn un the a/c when the heat is discomfortable. It means 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 11 months and a half per year. I don't follow any "temperature protocol". I always set the A/C thermostat to 24°C or 25°C (very cold) and I can hear the compressor suffering a lot to reach and keep the temperature.
Now it's winter, finally.

It's old enough to run on R-122 (I think).
I love it, tho' I don't need it too often.
The Americans have begun to discover this style, too - with, off course, the limitations their 110V systems set.

When we were up in Waco last week the people we visited had this huge thing for a/c in their window. It was a Bonaire water cooling unit. They had a tank on the roof to collect rain water that went to a hose that led to this unit installed in a window.
They turned it on and it really pushed out some cold wind. You could feel the breeze in the next room. The unit was much taller than it was wide. I would estimate that it was 3 feet tall by two feet wide. It was deep enough that it needed external brackets to support the weight in the window.

Works and works well when the air is "dry" enough.
Advanced units have two or more stages so that the air finally blown into the house is genuinely cooled, but not humid as from a swamp cooler.
Fascinating stuff - we should do more with it.

Did from 1985-2006. Had A/c installed in October of 2006.
I don't turn the A/c on until 80-85F
I guess I have a high pain tolerance from a lifetime of chronic neck problems. I'm also old school and tuff it out.
The real fun was from 2003-2006 when I worked graveyard and had my windows and shades permanently drawn. Trying to fall asleep (and sleep) in 123F on the second story was loads of fun. I call those 3 years my "Vietnam" experience. No time in my entire life did I have the most hatred for summer (and the most love for winter)!!
