It's all VERY preliminary, but some current forecasts have it/her landing on the coast near this area. I've heard predicted between Matagorda and Galveston. Matagorda is 53 miles to the south.

Local denizens have already gone wild snatching up supplies. I hear Wal-Mart is out or nearly out of water, canned goods, candles, batteries and such. Plywood is also just about gone from the local sources, but could be small resupplies over the next couple days.

Right between Brenham and Sealy...a safe distance from Matagorda and Galveston. El Campo's a bit closer, so Glenn, stay safe and if it gets bad, don't try to ride it out!

Although when Carla hit (sometime before this house was built), Bellville had 140 MPH winds, so if Rita's strong enough we'll probably feel it...

Just Canceled My Plane Reservations . . .

I was scheduled to fly to Houston tomorrow, to meet with clients in College Station on Thursday and Friday, and then attend a conference in Galveston on Saturday, and spend time with family in Spring/The Woodlands on Sunday. They are evacuating Galveston now, so the conference was cancelled. I called my client in CS and told them I was going to reschedule, as I didn't want to be stuck in Houston if Intercontinental was going to close due to the hurricane.

You guys be safe down there!

Tex

Oh god, here it comes

And it's getting freaky down here. They are trying to evacuate 1 million people around the Houston/Galveston area now.
Yes Dadoes, all the home depots and lowes, 84 lumber, are already out of plywood....Water is scarce already, all the schools in the area are closed from Wednesday-Friday.
This is not looking good....and frankly, I am freaking out here.

Few hotel rooms to be had

I'm in Austin TX on a business trip, and there are many Katrina displaced New Orleans families at the hotel. The front desk phone rings almost continually with people looking for a place to stay still from Katrina; now coastal Texans are calling too.

Those of us here in connection with work, feel awkward being here taking up space.

My prayers and good wishes to all

in the region, and especially you fellow residents of Applianceville, and your loved ones.

Lawrence/Maytagbear

I just finished talking with my parents. They are staying in Houston. Dad was mentioning the latest prediction is Metagorda like Glenn stated. I hope they will high-tail it to my sister's in Dallas. Glenn you both know you are both welcome here. If it comes in the Galveston/Houston area, there's a strong likelihood it will go generally up I-45 to Dallas, like Alicia did in 1983. Dallas experienced 70 mph winds then with many downtown buildings windows smached due to flying debris, particularly the pebble like substances and such on building tops. If it comes in more west, there a chance i will feel effects, in addition to San Antonio & Austin. This was the scenario in 1992 or 1994 and there were actually 2 deaths here attributed to flooding.

44 years ago the 24th is when we moved into the new house. My parents finalized the deal, we'd already looked at the house, because it emerged completely unscathed, not even a shingle, and absolutely no flooded streets after Carla.

Carla blew from 9/11-9/13 at winds estimated up to 175, based on overview of hurricanes the last 100 years or so here. I now find it "interesting" Carla 9/11/61 and 9/11/2001 hmm.

So much for my ramblings. Bob

First we had Katrina & the Waves and now we have "Lovely Rita Hurricane, where will we be after you. Wink your eye and slowly dissipate". (If some of y'all don't get that, I'll have you arrested by Srg. Pepper)

I understand (and don't doubt) that all hotels/motels within any distance are booked up, what with the Katrina evacuees also spread around the state. I was at Wal-Mart a few mins ago. Some things are sold out, some things are not. There's no bread, other than some hamburger and hotdog buns, bagels and such. Saw one fellow loading up a cart with tortillas, which seems kinda odd. Not much water, but there's some Gatorade and juices. Don't quite follow why people are buying/hoarding water, city services are working fine at the moment. Didn't look at the canned meats, already have a supply. Lotsa soups on the shelves, already have some of that too. Batteries are not all gone, but some sizes may be picked through. I understand some loads of plywood and such are still coming in tomorrow at the two local lumber supplies. What's there is snapped up quickly and some people are having to just go with what's available, such as sheets of siding instead of plywood. RJ's 'back room' has two walls that are glass / sliding doors to the south. We're getting that covered best as possible. He's worried about the baby grand in that corner, said it's a b!tch to move. I suggested at least wrapping it in plastic or something. His house came to within an inch of flooding during the Thanksgiving 2004 incident. He is raising up some of the furniture, we'll finish that tomorrow evening. He'll probably have to be at his office during the event, coordinating damage control. My house is about a foot higher than his, but who knows.... My main concern, I guess, is the two palm trees in front of my house. They're not anchored very deep. I don't care if they blow away, so long as they don't end up in my living room.

The granny is squared away with a "shack-up-sack" for staying with me, and she's not protesting the idea as much as usual. I'll shut down the network at some point before crunch-time, pick up all the servers, wrap them in trash bags. My mom is having conniptions, which she does about this kind of thing. Dad won't leave, but they really don't need to. My sister & bro-in-law in Bay City (see map above) are planning to hit the road with their travel trailer, for a planned trip to Somerville, but that may not quite be far enough to get completely out of the path. In Houston, my other sister's employer is evacuating the local office to one in Corsicana.

There's a tension in the air, and a sense of anticipation and dread.

anticipation and dread

Really can relate to this. For several weeks last summer our grocery stores had trouble keeping stocked with necessities due to one storm threat after another. We were ordered by the authorities 3x to evacuate. During the Charlie & Frances, we were fortunate to have escaped with next to no damage or issues. As little as 30 miles away an entirely different story. The last storm Jeanne, was predicted not to affect Floridas southwest coast at midnight Saturday at all. Well by 5-6 a.m. Sunday we had hurricane force windgusts and torrential rains blowing for the next 8 hours. The police came in the early morning hours as the Gulf of Mexico was overwashing the seawalls in the yards and at the end of the street, flooding the neighborhood streets. The only refuge we could find open was the Sarasota Ritz Carlton. It was a "white knuckle" drive down Tamiami Trail to get there! The out-of-town hotel guests were in a frenzy witnessing the outdoor mayhem as rainsoaked & windblown evacuees paraded into the hotel seeking refuge. In the grand foyer, garbage cans were placed below the opulent crystal chandelier to collect the water that was pouring through the roof and running off the fixture. Bellmen were mopping the floors.

All in all our area was spared the worst and gratefully this was quite minor in comparison to what others experienced 1st hand both last summer and this year. Stay calm, prepare & heed the warnings. You all are in our thoughts & prayers

You know that all of you down there are in my thoughts and prayers! Please be safe and if advised to leave do so!! Terry

This situation could get pretty bad. Some predictions are it will top Carla. Granny's house very likely will suffer some damage and maybe some flooding. RJ's house very likely will have some damage, he has added-on three times and has some weak points. My house is less than 2 years old, and should be very well built, but...

I'm also very worried about my friend GW down on the coast near Palacios Bay, west of Matagorda. His mother's house is only about a mile in. GW's house is only a mile or two from that. They'll leave, no question, they went to Dallas for Carla. But he has been doing expensive remodeling on his house .... and that may be all for naught. Lord Have Mercy.

Lord have Mercy indeed Glenn!

I hope it veers off for you. Your post on what is left made me remember the Blizzard of "78 here in Boston. It shut down the city for days, the drifts were over the car tops all over the city, a Huge fully loaded TracterTrailer tried to Cross the Mass Ave bridge at the height of the storm near my Dorm and it got blown across the bridge to the very edge. The only thing that prevented it from being blown over into the river was the fact that one of the cab tires got stuck and jammed against the high curb wall! I talked to the driver the next morining he was shaken.
After the storm susided all that was left in the 24 hour food stores was Famous Wafers, Whipped cream in cans and dirty magazines. We had no food or power in the dorms for days and so we ate Famous wafers sandwiched with whipped cream!! After 3 days of no food the National Guard showed up with a huge pot of soup for my dorm of 400! I tell you to this day it was the best tasting soup I ever ate!

This is no fun :'-(

Thanks to all for your prayers and wishes. I think we all are really going to need it.

This mornings news says it is going to hit between Galveston and Matagorgda. Also saying it may stall around with all the winds and rain, so Austin and Venus, ya'll better hunker down!

How do you figure out all these worse case scenarios? MG, I am so materialistic. Hating the thought of loosing most of my family/friends heirlooms.

No insurance, so I will be SOL, if this mobile home blows away. This day has been the day I have been dreading for the last 4 yrs. of living here. I figured at some point soon, I will start breaking down and crying, because this is just too much to handle.

There is only so much of my antiques and collectibles I can get out of here. Unfortuneatly, the rest are going to have to stay. I hate the thought of loosing ANYTHING!

I awoke to a bad dream this morning...(short version) "trying to save my mothers ashes, and only having a certain amount of time, to get back on the boat, before it closed up. My daughter and I paddling on a surfboard of all things, with me holding onto my mothers half opened Urn". It was really bizarre. I woke up by the time we got to the entrance of whatever it was we were trying to get to. Freaky.

So far, I am staying at my sister's BRICK home 4 miles away, while I think they are all heading up near Shreveport, to the in-laws. I may change my mind at some point, but right now I'm too stubborn to go at this point, because I want to be able to come back here ASAP and shoot any looters. I know, sick huh? Must the redneck Texan coming out in me.

Thanks for letting me rant. I apologise. It's just all so overwhelming, esp. for me. *sigh*.

Dadoes, I can relate to your mom having "conniption fits", I am like that too right now. Must be a female thing. lol
Man, I have been in such a tizzy.

Prayers go out to everyone here in Texas Applianceville. May God or whoever your higher power is, Keep you ALL safe!

Now to start the loading process! Gotta find the Xanax! lol/jk, NOT!

Ok folks, you cannot change the course, however, you can change a plan of being safe. These hurricanes are no game, not fun, and will be devestating. Take it from me here in Pensacola, all ya'll Texans even as far as Dallas, get out of harms way. Glenn, Austin, Venus & Family, appnut, Tex, and Maytagmom please adhere to the warnings. It is not only to coastal areas effected, but the horrible tornados spawned by these massive storms that follow them. So if you think you live far enough away from the coast, here is my Grandmothers house in Covington LA from three weeks ago. Covington is just north of New Orleans and is 75 miles from the gulf!

Steve

Carol, glad ya posted. Glenn, ugh, you weren't even born in 1961. As bad, if not worse than Carla, means a Catagory 5 storm, worse than Katrina. BTW for anyone curious, Hurricane Carla gave us Dan Rather. I even remember his constant broadcasting for the local CBS affiliate from the basement of a building in Galveston. This was quite a feat for modern tv journalism at the time & network big wigs noted. And the rest is history as we know it. Incidentally, Walter Cronkite went to the same Jr. High I did.

This morning's newspaper had an article about 7-10 Tulane Med. students were expected to arrive here in the next week for them to resume their training. Univ. of Texas Med. Branch Galveston could be flooded out like Tulane if the conditions are right. So, we'll be receiving more students and residents/fellows if needed.

Bob, quick note before I start loading the truck...

I was 4 years old when Carla hit. My parents tried to outrun the storm, by heading up to family near Marlin. My dad was an electrician at an alarm co. and had to be at work the next day, SOooo, he drive my mom and 3 kids BACK to Houston during the eye of the storm.
My sister and I were talking about this yesterday, and she said she can't even remember how he got back, but everything was intact, but there was no electricity, etc.
The next day it was flooded. The only memory I have is of me and my sister and brother playing in the water in front of the house. Me holding up my little dress (very high) so the water wouldn't get it wet. Dad took 8 mm film of it, and at the present time, it is at a video shop, getting transferred over to DVD.
Alicia was a *&^%$ too. I never slept at all that night. Living in South Houston at the time, I can just remember freaking out....sounded like a freight train coming through.
Didn't loose anything then, really did not have much then. Not like I do now. *sigh*
On a FUNNY note...now if Anderson Cooper shows up here, I will relays all the love and affection some of you guys have for him. And will direct him to this website! ;-) Gives me reason to stay and seek him out...he is cute. LOL.
More later from Hurricane Central.

Kids, I dont even know where to begin and how to phrase my wishes that his all comes to pass with minimal negative impact on your lives.

I am speechless and feel very powerless, even at this great distance from the coming storm.

May your higher power guide you, protect you, help you, and continue to nourish you mind, body and soul. AMEN.

And now to lighten this up and bring it down to the level to the level expected of me..

Carol, Miss you hunny and sorry I have not responded to your personal e-mail to me. If I had any good chemicals like valium, zanex, paxil etc, you KNOW they'd be on you doorstep FedEx! Lawd knows it's gonna be a bumpy ride.

Now WHO pissed off Mother Nature and how do we calm her down?
Maybe her mouth is the Grand Canyon and I should've stuck some of those chemicals in there?

Seriously..... my prayers are with everyone known and unknown to me in that area.

Glenn, Austin/Venus and Family, Bob, Tex and others I hope you guys will evacuate North if your counties go under a warning. Everything is crossed (including my eyes) that this wont be the case, but Rita packing a punch now and must be taken seriously. Keep us posted and let us know you are safe when you can.

That ain't no Marga-RITA!

Wow! As if things weren't crazy enough here! I haven't had time to read or post just because of the tremendous list of to-dos at the Wilder wildlife facility! Now, we have a hurricane to deal with!

Projected tropical storm winds will expand about 140 miles out. If the current path prevails, the storm will pass between San Antonio and Dallas, which means Bellville takes a big hit! I am more concerned with rain than with wind. We came to within one inch from flooding inside the house during our last heavy rain. It was about six inches deep in the garage, lapping at the back door. The RCI-59 is still in there on the packing pallet, so hopefully she will stay dry. I also have my fingers crossed that the laundry shed will not suffer any flooding. It is in the flood zone because of a creek that runs directly behind it.

It was a zoo at the grocery store this morning; no C or D batteries, no water, huge lines, etc. I am glad that's over with. Now I will continue to remove yard *projectiles* and get stuff up in the attic that may get wet. We will probably be taking in evacuating relatives and pets, so this will be one crazy household!

To all of my fellow washer friends along the gulf and inland in the projected storm area: Keep Safe! If you are told to evacuate, please do so. It is far better to be a little inconvenienced than injured (or worse).

Anderson Cooper? Not, my type, but I will certainly make room for, uhm, Hugh Jackman. ;-)

... Drinking out of a two-liter
When I cause a glimpse of Rita
Churning through the waters of the Mexico Gulf
Katrina came, if Rita makes it
Up to Texas, we will hate it
Goin' up to Okie, all the motels are booked

Ohhhh

Ugly Rita Hurricane
Never go mess with Venus
If you do, you'll wash her stove away

Bob, take the next verse :-)
