<span style="font-size: medium;">We lost cable, internet and wireless data service around 7:30PM. Finally data on the smart phone just started to work again, so I tethered it to the laptop. It was really bad earlier. I can see from my home Manhattan is still dark from 23rd st to the Battery. Our lights flickered a lot but we never lost power. The streets are empty, save for an occasional police cruiser or ambulance. Still some gusts but

WOW......we lost power about midnight......hooked everything to the generator, was doing OK, about 1AM the generator quit, and could not get it started....DAMN.....this thing is brand new, and just 4 hours of use on the meter....out of no where it quit, and seized up.....back to the store in the morning, and thats if they have anymore to exchange......PITA when you need it....

Power just came back on around 4:30AM......everything back on regular power and running....

very windy and COLD outside.......

hopeing the worst is over.......

it's been a rough ride.....some wose than others

What A Difference A Day Makes

Don't know if 24 little hours are going to bring sun and flowers, but at least for the most part wind and rain are gone.

Peeped out the window upon arising and the street and sidewalks are a mess. Lots of leaves, tree limbs and debris all over the place but other than that not much major damage. May go out for a walk about after breakfast, OTOH it is really cold out so going back under the duvet seems a better choice.

Parts of Manattan suffered really badly, Harlem,Yorkville, Turtle Bay, Chelesa, Fianacial District/Battery Park City all had problems.
 
Never lost power alot of flickering. Now that it is getting light out can see a lot of branches down but no major trees on my street. Many other parts of the city are without power and a majority of the smaller towns around are without power. The wind was incredible. I never heard the house crack and creek as much as yesterday afternoon. The rain was sideways blowing so hard. Seems the worst is over here. some rain and wind today but nothing like yesterday. Talk about a good blow job. lol

Daybreak...

<span style="font-size: medium;">It's gray, raining lightly and still windy. Cable, internet have been restored. A real mess downstairs. Getting dressed to check on the truck, then get the papers (for posterity) if anything is open. Subway system is wreaked, power will not be restored to most parts in Manhattan for over a week. This has to be the worse natural disaster this city has ever faced. Virtually no one outside. The silence is deafening. </span>
 
Just very, very, very

steady rain here in my part of Ohio. Rained all day Monday, is supposed to rain all day today. Rain is to gradually taper, and be at 30% chance by Friday. Temperatures are in the 40sF/ +2 or so C.

No power problems yet in my neighborhood, though other parts of my town have had blackouts. Schools in the area have been closed today or delayed. One of my best real life friends posted on Facebook the saga of getting their new and untried generator and transfer switch up and running, and a few minutes later, Ohio Edison was back on. Jean said she was afraid that Gerold was going to look like Clark Griswold from "Christmas Vacation." If I ever have a house of my own again, I think I am going to get a permanently installed Generac or Kohler.

For those who have followed my heat saga, my furnace has been cycling close to normally, and I am grateful.

So far, the winds have only been moderate, gusting at +/- 30 MPH.

Just heard on the radio that a hospital in NYC is without electricity and the back up generator failed.  All critical patients are being moved to other hospitals and of course have to be carried down the stairs since no elevators. 

 

Way up here in central Ontario we just were affected by the tail end of the storm.  We got very little rain but had high winds.  My electricity went out 10 times starting at about 3 am for a few minutes each time.  I use a cpap machine so of course ever time it went out I  woke up since I had no air.  I just had to wait 30 seconds for the back up generator to kick in fortunately.  The last time the electricity went out it was 4:30 am and the generator was still running when I got up at 6 am.  Electricity finally came back on at 7 am.

NYU-Langone Hospital

On the Eastside of Manhattan lost backup generator power last night. About 215 patients were transferred to other local area hospitals with the last remaining completed about an hour or so ago.

That was the last report one saw on local NYC news about an hour ago, was getting a bit weary of newscasters with hero complexes harranging the employees/doctors and others trying to get the "story" that one turned off televison.

Besides the power outages, NYU Hospital, the crane coming down on West 57th Street, and flooding of the NYC subway system and other areas there isn't much to report about NYC aside from damage and clean up, so they keep going back to the same "live" locations over and over.
 
Well just got back....

<span style="font-size: medium;">a lot of things blown from the terraces of my complex, patio furniture, flower pots, screen inclosures, plants, even a shopping cart. Amazing the stuff that was strewn about, not to mention what was hanging from the trees. A few trees down, most of the leaves on the ones standing have been stripped away. The swimming pool cover was ripped right off, (it's an Olympic sized pool, so that's one huge cover). A lot of large branches on the street, side walk and parking lot, some resting on cars. One grocery store open and the dry cleaner was open. Everything else was closed. No newspapers have been delivered yet. Truck is plastered with leaves but otherwise appears ok. It's pouring again and real windy, I guess it's not quite over. </span>
 
Yes, Out in Breezy Point, Queens

A seaside complex an entire block of homes went up in fire last night.

Should have said "Manhattan" and not "NYC". As one has been speaking with friends and family in the other broughs and New Jersey, yes things are bad in terms of flooding, power loss and other damages.

Am really worried about the power outages as it is turning cold outside, and probably will be downright chilly by evening.

<span style="font-size: medium;">Breezy Point is a gated beach community in Queens county, NYC. 50 homes caught fire, most of that has been extinguished. No other major fires have occurred. While this is without a doubt the biggest natural disaster the city has every had to face, and damage will be in the untold millions, most of the city suffered the kind of damage my neighborhood suffered. </span>
 
Very calm outside.....no vehicles around for miles.....seems too quiet.....most of the neighbors are in their homes, branches and such laying around, AND its still drizzling rain, wind blowing, but not that bad.....

we made it thru, but some not so lucky....but for the most part, were thankful for the few casualties....it could have been a lot worse....

Thanks for everyones input for their areas, and thoughtful concerns....this was better information than Action News!
 
Whew!

Glad to hear everyone made it through so well. Nature's power can be incredible. Keep us informed. It's a sunny morning here in the Midwest, a typical chilly fall day. I suppose the remnants of Sally will make it here later in the week.
 
We did not lose power. The howling hurricane force wind gusts did not come during the night. It is raining, chilly and breezy, like a regular fall rain. It is a blessing to be spared the worst of the storm's wrath, so far. I hope others have a speedy return to normalcy. Sell property close to the water to Republicans who don't believe in rising ocean levels and move to higher ground.
 
News...

That's no joke. It's been observed more often than not that in times of disaster, etc., that information travels faster and more reliably via sources like shortwave radio and Internet. It comes from people who are experiencing events first hand not some scrub newscaster looking for a promotion to the Today Show for his/her dramatic coverage. I'm glad to hear from our AW family on the East Coast and all is under control. I'll breathe a little better now...

It's been my experience that you don't hear of the full extent of hurricane damage til 3-4 days after the storm when communications has been restored.

Getting into and out of New York for the next week at least will be difficult. The subway will take some time to drain & assess the damage from salt water.

All the airlines have flown planes all over the place to get them out of harm's way and now they'll need to be flown back, but first engineers will need to check out the runways at the NY airports to make sure no undermining has taken place under the runways.

Saw the front facade fell off of a building in NYC and you could see all the rooms and the furniture. I wonder if anyone was in any of those rooms when that happened?

Usually with landfalling hurricanes you see tornadoes, but I haven't heard any reports of such. Is that only a southern thing?
Anyone heard from Jetone or Toggles? (even though he doesn't appear here too often anymore).
