Add me to the long list of those who are happy to see a post from you again!  I was just about to write and ask how you're doing, but I won't burden you with the need to reply to yet another message.  I'm glad you received all of those well-wishes.

 

As you know, when I was a kid we had the '67 Snorge matched pair, but they were not "Her Majesty" machines.  The dryer had the Stop-N-Dry feature but we never used it.  Lint filter at the bottom.  A LOUD end of cycle buzzer, but when I discovered it was adjustable via a screw on the back of the console, I toned it down.

 

It looks like the "Her Majesty" machines got an upgrade with a full-width lens for the console light.  The lights on Mom's machines were about 8" wide.

 

Can't say I'd wish either machine on anybody.  In later years, the gas dryer started making it smell like a smog alert -- inside the house.  It couldn't have been healthy for my mom, who eventually developed respiratory issues.

 

As for the dishwasher, you and I know perfectly well that if Nate were still local, we'd be driving up to pay you a visit and fetch that machine.

How's that for positive energy and karma? With such an awesome list of folks who love your pile finds, and such cool appliances to post about, everyone wanted to comment first on your return to posting. It should tell you that we all love you Andy!!

I am glad you found these, and REALLY GLAD you enjoyed playing with the dryer. I think that's the tonic you needed. May the pile soon cough up even more dandy items.

In the meantime, two alumni from the pile will be quite busy this weekend as I didn't wash much laundry last weekend, and the wicked cold snap of this week had Duke energy running radio ads asking us all to conserve power and not run our major appliances if we could avoid it. I don't recall them ever doing that in the winter before. So, two pile finds from 2010 will be busy washing tomorrow. Its supposed to be a rainy day, so perfect for staying in and playing with washers.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that these machines find adoptive homes so they too can be alumni of the pile!

I have the console from the Her Majesty washer, if you find a vintage Wardge you feel the need to convert. It was the only thing worth saving on this particular machine.

As far as "top of the line" goes,this wasn't it. Norge made the "Touch & Wash washer AND matching "Touch &Dry" dryer for the "Monkey Wards" line up.They had all space age componants and the washer was a true three speed model.

Nah, not really, any more than they do nowadays. I had the original all-Bakelite arm from the little '69 Deluxe you found us, and the Imperial arm with the twirlie, and the washing was equivalent. But if you had your choice and it didn't hurt, wouldn't you want the mini arm, too? :-)

This wash tower was what the '69 Deluxe came with, and kicked much more butt than the tall but single-slit tower that rode on the rack with the Imperial. This one had directed jets plus a jet to wash the silverware basket, and it worked. The only bummer was losing a contiguous section of rack at the back; the rack with the fixed/bearing-mounted tower made for much more flexible loading.

I love the concentric rings in the top rack that shoo dishes away, so that the stream shooting straight up from the tower could hit the spinning constant-rinse disc on the top of the machine.

Considering how amazingly well the Deluxe cleaned with its basic punch-to-start-and-stand-back cycle, I'd bet the Custom Imperial/Wards Signature here would be stunning, especially with the 150-degree wash option.

Sound-insulated? So, like power-washing a wooden shed instead? ;-)

I think quiet operation is overrated if the sound is satisfying, like a maelstrom of kick-butt unfolding within.
 
On the Custom Imperials, only the top and left side of the dishwasher are insulated.

The constant-rinse disc in my 1969 Custom Imperial is tired, It's loose and doesn't spin much because of the wear. The wash tower isn't fixed to the spray arm but to the lower rack but it's the one with the ball on top. It works fairly well but you have to be careful that it sits on the center of the bellow when you start the dishwasher as otherwise, it probably won't turn. 

 

 

 
 
That's quite a find, Drew! Thanks for sharing all the great photos. I'd have to agree that the FrigiWards dishwasher is a low-mileage unit. They were great candidates for rust-outs. I've always thought that upper rack was odd, and wondered about the purpose of the tower of rings.

Oh--and someone should be in charge of reviving Nate!

This is Robert & Fred's Montgomery Ward dishwasher.  We had some fun with the Frigidaire demonstration door-window a couple of weeks ago.  It's a cool action inside, less upward spray from the lower arm than I'd expected (this one does not have the whirly-gig) but it seems to move a lot of water and it washed the full load we did later quite well.

Wouldn't that kinda like my being in the heart of the F-5 tornado? Talk about noise and having to hold on for dear life! LOL! Which, of course, means that I'm seriously entertaining the idea...

I got a chance to evaluate the Ward's dishwasher tonight. Mixed news...

1) Overall condition. There is bubbling in the door liner around the rinseaid dispenser and more so at the bottom edge of the inner door. Also a bit of it around the motor mount in the bottom of the tub. It's not thru but it is there.

2) The wash motor is SIEZED! Looks to have been weeping and totally locked up the motor bearings.

3) The controls themselves are in working condition. After a slight bit of love, the timer both rapid and normal advance is ok. The status lights are all good and the selector buttons are also in good shape after a bit of cleaning and lube. The fill valve wants to activate and the float switch assembly is also functional.

4) The racks are almost in new condition considering her age. Overall, a nice little treasure trove of parts. And a fair amount of them has been spoken for by a member here who can speak up if he wants but I will have fun in saying he lives north of the border... LOL! It was a pleasure to finally be able to put a voice with a name, kind Sir. Someday, I'll put a face with that voice!

Thank you all for your kind words. I'm not kidding when I say this is like a second family. I'll start getting more into the machines after my current case of sciatic nerve pain with the accompanying clenching leg muscles is back under control. For those who have had/have this, you know the... Pain level it is. For those who have not had the dubious pleasure of knowing it, thank your stars!

The saga of Her Majesty continues!!!

Score a small victory over the bane of our collective existence: SCRAPPERS!

I am off duty for a week to deal with the awesome pain level that only a sciatic nerve can cause. Last night at about eight o'clock, I was at the shop dropping off paperwork before my leave. As the shop is full of used machines to be overhauled and sold, Her Majesty had to sit outside by the back door on our property for one night.

This morning, I was at the local scrapyard that our shop uses to drop off a damaged alloy rim from the Solara. As I walk around to the office to get paid, I do what I always do... Scan the pile for anything interesting. I see the back of a green dryer that I know to be a old Norge. For some reason I had this sick feeling and asked them to turn her around so I could see the front. Of course, since I had no hardhat or yellow vest, I couldn't do it myself. Sonnavabish, it was a Her Majesty. I call the shop to find out that mine was missing, having been stolen during the hours of darkness where the cameras can't see well. THANK YOU ROBERT for providing this site. I showed the people there this thread with the pics and model/serial numbers I posted on the 10th. They verified she was mine and pulled it out of the pile. Talk about pure chance of my timing. She had just been dropped off and was less than 2 minutes from being crunched.

Now I get the pleasure of not only rescuing her from another pile, a uglier pile than The Pile behind our shop, but I get the pleasure of messing with some methheaded scumbag's day because as soon as I file the police report, the junkyard will supply the police with this dirtbag's vehicle picture w/license plate, his driver's license and the finger print they make us all put on their copy of the money slip that this motherless offal signed stating that she was his property and not stolen. Yes, I realize that the jerkwad will get a slap on the wrist but I don't care. It's a small but morale boosting victory.

I'll get her back soon. There is paint damage on the left hand side and the top came off when dumped. I will be able to give her a close inspection as soon as I can.

Guys and Gals, I finally got one back. I've had a few stolen and, FINALLY, I got one back partially due to my being a hopeless appliance geek and posting this thread with pics and info! Thanks, Robert!

That's a great story!  I'm glad you got one of the thieves, won't they be surprised when the police show up with a citation for unlawful taking?!

 

 I've had more than a couple scrappers stop when they see appliances in the open garage and ask if they can haul off my garbage appliances for me.  Uh.... no.  Never had anything stolen, but I'm wary of leaving the garage open when I'm not out there.

 

There are a couple of guys that I call when I do want stuff hauled away and they usually jump and rush right over knowing my scrap weighs twice as much as most newer appliances they usually get calls on.
 
Well Andy, after reading that story I'd say you were meant to have this dryer.  Or at least rescue it -- twice -- in order to find it a loving home.

 

That would NOT EVER be my home, btw.  I get queasy just looking at the control panel.

I think I can imagine how you feel, I really do.

Back on July 4th weekend 2009 I re-arranged my storage trailer of machines and had loaded back 21 Kenmore and Whirlpool washers and 2 dryers. I didn't re-enter the trailer for about two months, but when I did I found it completely empty. I would have loved to fry the arses of the people who violated my space...

Back then we did not have the identification rules in place that we have now which will hopefully locate then stun the jerks who took Her Majesty enough that they might think twice next time, and hopefully they'll tell their fellow thieves.

In my case, some of the machines I don't miss, and it may be good that the metal presumably got recycled. Others I miss, including the 4 Ladies and the 1970 500s in the middle of the photo below.

SO GLAD you got her back Andy, and I agree with Greg, I think it means you're supposed to be involved in the future of that machine in some way or another.

Actually Ralph, I can't totally blame you for that but having her is better than shaving with her...

Just filed the report. After the lady at the counter got over her laughter that a grown man was complaining about having his collectable green dryer stolen but was able to identify it from pictures posted on a website dedicated to people who collect them...

They will contact Western Metals to work with them and eventually get the dryer back to me so I can do a triage on the damage. Gordon, I had to call you first so you could enjoy a little Karma in action and maybe get a little closure.

Got her back.

Met the police at the metal yard. Proved that she was mine and was released to me. The jerkof most likely get hit with a petty theft charge as I could only value her at $400 and the minimum value for a misdemeanor charge is $650. Oh well. The police are going to try to tack on a fencing stolen property if they can just to add a small amount of misery to this scum.

We'll see about repair. She was dropped off and skewed the frame so nothing lines up. The left hand side paint is really scratched up badly. The chrome on the console is also bunged up but not badly. It'd be a labor of love (or vindication...). Sigh...

Andy, you know what they say:

Love is blind, and I mean that in the worst possible context.  Tough love, however, is not.  

 

After reading your latest post, I retract my previous statement.  I now consider this a classic case of aggravation and waste of time and energy in true Snorge style. 

 

Perhaps the powers that be are trying to tell you this dryer is destined to reincarnate as a Yugo -- or whatever the modern day equivalent would be.
 
Oh, I do understand.

But I dunno what I'll do. Let's face it. Each and everyone of us has at one time or another (or more than that...) come face to face with something that just asks to be saved, even though you really do know better. Sometimes you get rewarded by it just coming together and purring. Other times, you have to beat your head against the spiked rock wall before you give into the inevitable.

Kinda like people, too. LOL!

Anyhow, I'm not sure I was going to ever keep her and save her or pass her on to a possible loving home. At the very least, I was going to video that huge 747 turbofan like blower for fun. Meanwhile, if people need any parts, I'll entertain it as she may have been turned from Royalty to donor by this abduction.

My son whose member name I'm using with his permission for this reply is extremely upset & angry as a result of what he read. I don't know what is going on on here that he's upset about,but I want an apology.

DESERVES to see?  I'd like to know the basis for that assertion.

 

There is nothing upsetting about RCD's response.  If there is anything to be upset about, it's your son's request for someone to risk injury by operating a machine in a dangerous manner.

 

Judging from your statements above that attempt to shift blame, it's clear that you are aggravating your son's overall condition and making it worse than it needs to be. 

 

I've reported your hostile post to the webmaster in hopes it will be removed.  This attack on one of the most good-natured members we have here is entirely uncalled for.

 

If anyone needs to issue an apology, it's YOU, Mom.
