In february 2011 my 5 years old computer broke. It started smelling burnt and there was some smoke coming from the backside. I turned it off directly of course. Some day later i tried use the compter again but it didnt even started.

So i had to get a new one. The old one was a Compaq. I found a pretty cheap compter on my nearest supermarket. Its a Packard Bell. Windows 7 84 bit edition.

Very good computer in my opinion. Only sad thing is that i lost some videos and other stuff i had on my old computer. Including some of would upload here. Oh well.

Heres video about the new computer.

If your old hard disk wasn't fried, you could possibly hook it up to your new computer and copy the files that way. If you don't know how to do this, maybe someone you know could do this for you.

File Recovery

If the old hard drive still works, you should be able to copy your files to your new computer relatively easily. From your favorite office supply store or an online store get an external hard drive case for your old hard drive. Make sure you get one that is compatable with your old hard drive, there are two that are most common: IDE and ATA. Remove the hard drive from the old computer and put it in the external case. The plug configuration on the external hard drive case must match your old hard drive. The connection from the external case to your new computer will be a USB cable. From that point, if there is no problem with the old hard drive you can copy your files to the new maching. Once you have copied the files from the old hard drive you can format it and use it as extra storage.

It could be easier than that

If you new computer has a spare drive bay. Most disks have "jumpers" (connectors to join pins together) on them to indicate whether they are "master" or "slave". The drive in your old computer will amost certainly be set as a "master" but they usually have a label on them to indicate what the settings for slave are. Insert the drive in the spare bay and secure - there will usually be spare power and motherboard connections (usually a ribbon cable), these can usually can only be connected the correct way round. Not sure about Win 7 but with XP you had to enter the BIOS (Press F2 as the computer starts up) to indicate the disk is there. It could be that Win 7 will detect the drive automatically, where upon it will appear as another disk, usually assigned a disk number before the CD or DVD drive.

If it is "found" you should be able to access your your files, and indeed you can just leave it there as a back up - you can even remove the, now redundant, operating system from this disk to make more space for back up.

Good luck!

Sadly the hard drive was fried. The fan had stopped working while i was at the toilet. When came back it smelled burnt at the computer and seconds later smoke started seeping from the backside. It was only to throw away the computer.

I miss some things i had on it. I will try to find smome scanned items from a friend if he still has the papers still. Some old commercial about washing machines from the 60´s (Swedish ones)
