Waste King disposals were great. I love the beautiful orange color too.

My parents live in the last section of "phase I" of Elk Grove Village Illinois. Their house was built in 1959, and was outfitted with a Hotpoint electric kitchen, which included a built in oven and stove, fridge, disposal, and washer and dryer pair.
One block south, there are different style houses, slightly larger, built 1962. From there on west to hwy 53 the builder(Centex Construction co) used Waste King appliances. The Washer dryer set and fridge were eliminated instead for a dishwasher. Depending on which model you bought you got either a regular range, or Waste King built-ins. Every model had the dishwasher and disposal.

My parent's house, taken on a Christmas day, maybe 2002?
The one car garage was turned into a family room back in 1975. The current garage is around the back, built by my dad in 1974.
I still think its a nice house, and very typical of late 1950's Chicago suburbia.

Now that I see this picture I'll date it 2001. The black Sable was my sisters, the white Grand Marquis was mine.

Does the Orange WK have the "reverse" style swivel WK hammers on the shredwheel?I liked the way they worked.Very effective.I thought some WK machines had fixed hammers on the shredwheel.
 
I have a later Frigidaire disposer made by Waste King in almost the same color.
Hopefully I can set the two together and find out.

Parents house: New in 1959 it sold for $21,500...the model is called "The Mediterranean" I grew up there. My parents have alwasy been very persnickety about upkeep and maintenance, and IMHO have the sharpest house on the block. Over the years realtors would ring the door bell and ask if they would be interested in selling. The answer was always the same, NO!
The house has two downsides: no basement, and its kinda at the end of an O'hare runway(its 3 miles from the west fence of Ohare)I always found it relaxing to sit on the patio and watch the planes fly over, every two minutes or so...747's, DC10's, L1011's...I loved the jumbos! The worst offenders were the old Boeing 707's and 727's which would literally shake the house when they flew over...

So many memories triggered by one disposer...wow!
 
If memory serves...

The orange WK is identical in mechanism to their fill size models, the main difference is a shorter upper chamber. The disk would be stainless steel with pivoting hammers, and the grind ring would be cast.
 
I had a fair number of friends growing up who's parent's had these disposals in their kitchens. The last time I saw one of these was in my friend John's house as his parents were moving out of it in 1987. The orange WK was still sounding good, but by that time the splasg guard had worn away. 1987 would have made that disposal 23 years old, a long time for one to last!

My friend John's mom took very good care of stuff. When they moved from their house the original WK dishwasher was still there and running too.
I remember my friend Kari who I knew from Church youth group. 6 kids in her family, and her mom went thru one dishwasher after abother. Their orange WK disposal stood up better, and was still going the last time I was at their house, which would have been early 90's...
I am amazed at the people I have remembered because of one disposal~
