I was wondering if these were still available. I removed it from it's location to keep it full... I don't plan compacting anything that stinks with it but still, I'd like to get some more if they're still available!

Nice score, Phil. I've never used a WP Trash-Masher, compactors are pretty rare around here and GE & KA are about all I've seen.

I have a KitchenAid compactor that I found at a thrift store, also never used. We use it for cans and plastic recycling, not ooey-gooey trash so it stays pretty clean.

There's a Frigidaire disposer advertised on CL at $600! I did contact the seller telling him I was interested in getting it but stating that I couldn't afford buying it near that price. He seemed nice and he asked me to make an offer. Then I made what I thought was a fair offer at $100 but the seller didn't get back to me since.
The Whirlpool I got was advertised at $25 negotiable and I didn't even negotiate the price as I thought it was fair! But Even at that price, it's been advertised for a while and remained unsold!

In my previous post, I meant a Frigidaire compactor, not a disposer! I also wish I could find a Frigidaire disposer (I know they were Waste King rebadges) but I haven't seen a single one for sale yet!

We used to like putting giant rounded long-neck Almaden jugs in a friend's Trash Masher.  The whole machine would move in a sort of cartoonish style as the mechanism met with resistance, but of course it won out in short order with a muffled yet satisfyingly explosive sound of triumph and finality.

My aunt and uncle had a house built in the mid 1970s. Growing up in the 80's, I was there a lot. They had all SEARS everything including a central vac and a trash compactor. I think that's the ONLY time I have ever used or saw one...

They were practical before recycling. I had one that was original equipment in a condo in Annandale, VA. I was the only one in my court that used one or the disposer it seemed, for on trash day, people put these white plastic kitchen trash bags with all sorts of gloppy contents while I would put out one of the trash masher bags once a month. I only used it for clean containers and paper and I was just one person. I loved the straining sound it made just before something would lose structural integrity and break with a muffled boom. It reminded me of a bathroom noise. People wondered why using it made me laugh.

I have a Hobart KitchenAid that Steve B. and I found at a local thrift shop, never used.  It's roughly from the time of the 18 series dishwashers.  I installed it under the counter in the garage and it's used only for recycling.   It really isn't much more than a novelty and source of wonder for some of the younger ones in the family (who doesn't love smashing things?) but it is useful for compacting large amounts of recyclables down to fit into our city's relatively small bins for weekly pickup.

I wonder if people still install them? I built a house in the 80's and bought one to install but thats cause we had to bring trash off the mountain to dispose but soon after we had two large trash containers for the increased population. Mine is still in the box new but think just having a slide out under the counter with 2 or 3 sections must be better for recycling...Does anyone miss the insinerator air is cleaner now

I don't know how many home type trash compactors are still used-but with recycling they are less useful-or put it this way the recucling truck has a compactor.Often in "single stream recycling" RL trash trucks are used.Would have to bet some trash truck drivers have great fun smashing and crushing things in their trucks compactor-they can exert up to 100 tons force!The truck compactor can compact to greater density than the home one.Same with stationary-bailer compactors at trash transfer stations.Often the place you go to dump your trash and recyclable goods if you don't have regular trash service.The home type compactor would be good to fulfill your home crunching needs-they are MUCH cheaper than a trash truck--The compaction body and truck chassis add up quick in cost!!!Not to mention the maintenance!
