Ok.... I have a 18 month old VERY lightly used Hoover carpet shampooer.. I bought it at the time thinking that since it looked like the older model hoovers it would last like the one that i had from 1997..(i wanted to upgrade to one with rotating brushes.. and plus the tank on that one was cracked)..I did not like the feel or look of the new (chineese/maytag) made ones.. Well that was a mistake... I have used it about 6 times max and the "turbine" (thats what makes the brushes work) has cracked and now they dont work..Im very meticulous and keep them quite clean (which i got complimented on by the vaccume repair shop)..

They sell the one listed below for $399.. However if i hand over my broken Hoover they will sell it to me for $299.. I think if i pushed i could get it for $250... He said he hardly every fixes these and i do like the way that the water is in one tank, soap in a second tank and dirty water in a thrid.. Plus everything snaps apart for simple and easy cleaning...

But its expensive...If Miele made one, i wouldnt question it... I love my miele vaccume...

should i not be cheap and get this Royal made one?? OR

It's hopeless, they're all

junk.
Buy one that works at a garage sale or thrift shop and accept that it will be junk in a short time.

The throw-away mentality has captured this sector 100%.

I love my Miele vacuums. Best modern vacs in the world.

Like my 1950's Kirby (it's a wedding of several), too. Why on earth Kirby decided to go the fat pregnant cow routine in recent years is beyond me.

Better yet----

just rent Rug Doctor or call in Stanley Steemer.

This is one thing that is pointless to own, in my opinion.

We have...

....an older version of this. Our controls are not on the handle...but this is effectively the updated version.

We have cream carpet that takes a pounding from dogs...I can tell you for a fact that this machine can get it as clean as a commercial steam cleaner.....provided you are patient and don't try and do a rushed job....

Friends who have triplets also borrowed it and said it was wonderful on their light coloured berber carpet too....

I Have...

...The Bissell Pro Heat 2X and I'm much happier with it than any previous cleaner I've owned. The water-heating feature makes it clean far better than just hot tap water, and the revolving brushes help a lot too. What's best about it is the selection of optional tools for the hose attachments. There is a 6" wide stair tool, a 4" wide upholstery tool, a crevice tool that is perfect for cleaning that black like at the edge of the carpet next to the baseboard, and a bare floor tool. I own all these. There is also a power brush attachment for small areas, which I don't own. Bissell really did their homework on all these goodies - the machine has been used for carpet, bare floors, auto interiors, and furniture, and does a great job every time. The Bissell cleaning products are not cheap, but they leave things smelling very nice.

Keep the ideas coming..So far its votes for a bissel pro heat

And FYI: the last time i had my carpet profeesionaly cleaned, it came out looking like it was covered in meth and was as crunchy as a corn flake

Got the Bissel Pro Heat 2 also and really like it. Has everything you're looking for, dual tanks, plus soup injection that you control - Light, reg., & Heavy soil plus rinse. Some complain that it doesn't meter correctly but I've had no problems.

If you have a Bed, Bath and Beyond nearby use one of their 20% off coupons.

We have the Hoover stream cleaner with the Spin Scrub brushes. It really cleans well and extracts liquids well. The carpet usually is dry within 2 hours after you wash it. If you do an optional rinse with warm water and a little vinegar added the carpet is really soft when dried.
This unit also cleans hard floors very well too. The floors are instantly dried as you clean them.
The only thing to remember it that they don't heat the water, they just maintain the temp of the water you put into it.

P.S.: Bissell ProHeat

If you do decide on a Bissell ProHeat, you need to be careful about two things:

1) If you want to carry the machine (like up some stairs) carry it by picking up the base; don't use the handles. The base is disproportionately heavy, due to the heating and brush mechanisms, and it can strip screws in the base from the weight.

2) Follow the instructions about rinsing out the machine to the letter. The machine is circulating water and shampoo through a heated plumbing system; if you don't rinse it out after use, the shampoo builds up in the plumbing and can cause it to clog.

Neither of these common-sense precautions should be considered a reason not to buy the machine - every machine has its little quirks in use.

I have a Vax Rapide and it is not too good and Which magazine advised that it is to be avoided!! It does clean the carpet after about 20 passes and from the colour of the water it does the job but it hellishly noisy and hard work. I have rented Rug Doctor over the years and highly recommend them. Also am advised by family that the TOL Bissell is the way to go!

I have the Hoover Steam Vac Spin Scrub, I got it in late 2006, I have used it very heavily, usually 4-5 times a month between the dog and I shampoo my car interiors alot. I have had no problems, except it is starting to leak a little. It performs great.

I am wanting to upgrade to the Hoover Steam Vac Platinum Series. I think it looks like a great performer, especially being heated and 2 rows of brushes

My hoover spin scrub brushes are driven by the suction, like a turbo brush, we have had it since the 90's. I would think you could just get the cartridge with the rotating brushes? I would try the vacuum cleaner "stores" on e...bay and see if i couldnt get what i need to fix old faithful. i am not selfish at all, but this has been one "toy" i have never loaned out. (probably why it still works). I am not quick to figure out ways to "get over" but when i purchased it long ago at k-mart there was a strict return policy. evidently people would purchase one and share it with the whole family and neighborhood then return it. alr2903

hehehehehe.. well...

im down to either the bissell pro heat 2x or the royal.. The main attrection to the royal with me is that its sold by a mom and pop style store and i like that.. I like the treatment and the feel.. And the fact i get help and a full explanation of the machine..But the bissell looks nice and i think it would work fine

I bought an early Bissell carpet cleaner back in the 90's. It was a cannister type model, so no rotating brushes etc. Have never used it much, but probably will fill it up with plain water to give the carved thick wool Chinese carpet a good scrubbing in the dingier areas when I roll it out again. This time it's going into the spare bedroom instead of into the master bedroom - it will stay mintier that way. Also don't want to keep it rolled up too long, as I understand it's not that good for the carpet.
