Last night we went down to Kihei, to do a pick-up of a washer. As we went by Keolahou Church, I saw some braindead A**h*le had dumped a fridge and a PORTABLE Dishwasher in the church lot. On our way back up South Kihei Road, we stopped and took a look. The dishwasher is a White on white Kenmore Ultra wash(whirlpool built). It is missing the front panel, so you can see all the workings for the detergent dispenser, but I think I can fix that. So I get it here to the shop and it works great! I can't wait to take it home and start enjoying a holiday from apron strings! When we first moved here, dishwashing by hand didn't seem to be such a chore. Now we are so busy all the time the frickin' dishes start piling up in the sink as soon as you put the dishpan away. Not even sure where I'm gonna put the machine, but I'm sure we'll figure something out.

What kind of DW detergent is good these days? I used to use Electrosol tabs, but have been outta the loop for a while

Cascade Complete powder is ABSOLUTE TOPS in any condition.SUNsations,not to be confused with Sunlight,works well in some conditions, but I've found not in all conditions.One can get it in dollar stores.Personally,I've never found the tablets as good as a good powder.Boy,I sure miss the high-phosphate version of Calgonite in the late 70s,it made things sparkle and gleam unlike anything EVER.

"Aloha" David, I've been using the Wal-Mart "Great Value" Brand of D/W Detergent. It is a "Best-Buy" in the Consumer Reports and for me has been doing quite well. I've also been using Electrosol Powder and Tablet's as well and I used to use Cascade, but Cascade seems to leave dry pieces of Detergent on my Glassware and the others have never done that at all. I've got my Water Heater Heating to around 120-Degrees F, so I'm thinking that the Water should be hot enough for everything. I've also got a 50-Gallon Self-Clean Water Heater and with just myself being here I hardly ever run out of Hot Water.

Good Luck with your newly found Dishwasher, how about some Pix's of it when you are able?

so STB,which Cascade formula did you have? There's Pure Rinse powder,which is Cascade's standard formula,then there's Complete,their best formula.Several years ago the regular powder still was chlorinated, then became enzymatic like it's still more powerful cousin,the Complete powder.BTW,sometimes 120-DEGR.F might not be hot enough.Yes, all machines today claim you can go that low,but some of them boost the temp.with time only,i.e.they,as a GE example, might have a 20 minute main wash,figuring that's enough time to get the water to 140.Problem with that is you may start with 120 water, but temps in the line can wildly fluctuats by the time you get to the main wash.A better arrangement, found on Whirlpool-made Kenmores and some others is to delay timer advancement until the water gets to around 140,THEN advance.

Yes...Wallyworld's Great Value is the best..I don't have to pre-rinse the dishes and don't have to use Jet-Dry. Dishes come out spsarkling....
 
Detergent & a dumb question

Cascade Pure Rinse (powder) is what I use w/ Jet Dry in the rinse aid dispenser of my Maytag DWU9962AAE. I just fill both cups and push "smart start," the sensor cycle. If you don't use Jet Dry then the Cascade Complete is a good choice (expensive). I don't think you need to use the Complete and Jet Dry (waste of money). That's like using Tide w/ Downy and then using Downy.

Do you have a Wal-Mart in Maui?

Yes, we have all the same ugly big box stores! We have Walmart, Kmart, and Costco. If you stand out on Dairy Rd, it looks like any commercial strip on the mainland. I am secretly hoping for a Target-they are not as socially reprehensible as Walmart.
 
David David David!!! Allright an UltraWash Portable. What a machine!! Can't wait to see pix of outside and inside so I can figure out all the features it has. Scott55405 had one for a few years and really loved it.
 
One thing though...

I checked the service techs cheat sheet and ran it through a cycle. This machine only has ONE rinse after the main wash. Is that gonna be enough? Even the ultra cheap Roper DW we had in an apartment rinsed twice I think
 
David, there's one rinse, but there should be a purge between the wash & rinse. You'll have to see for yourself if one is enough for your needs.
 
My brother has a build in Ultra Wash and loves it, because you never have to pre-rinse.
When you get the control panel, try the "water heat" button (wash heats to 155 degrees F.), and the "hot rinse" button (heats the rinse to 155 degrees) and you should only need 1 rinse.
Bob is right about the purge. My old KitchenAid would skip the purge and do a second rinse if needed. Did you run it empty?

Electrasol Tabs for me

I haven't tried every brand of detergent for sure but haven't been disappointed with the Electrasol tabs (without the jet ball). I just find them convenient, no measuring, and when I buy a big box of 80 they last for months around here. I only run the dw every few days and never pre rinse so plates etc have plenty of time to get good and crusty and the tabs never fail to clean.
 
no tears from Sears

we've had an UltraWash for 15 years, it is EXCELLENT in performace.No grit all over dishes as with lesser brands,no pre-rinsing,even pots with BAKED-ON food come COMPLETELY clean.
 
Toggle says- remember powder powder powder.

The gels/liquids foam up too much and use clay as a filler to make a sludge of the fomrula... gums up the machine to some degree eventually.

I too am not thrilled with the one rinse on my SS K-Aid. I thought it was just a fancier version of my beloved portable WP. But things change.... Light wash was W-R-R and it worked great!

Now there are two motors (one for the drain pump)!

The "Power Scrub" option (or whatever it's called) rasies the temps by 5 degrees and adds a second rinse. I use it anytime there are no plastic in the machine and it helps...
 
But in theory the final rinse is filled with rinse-aid (anionic or non-ionic surfactant is it?) Which I believe is a component of detergent.

So how pure is any rinse, actually?

I would normally be freaked out over this, but I have been drinking this chemical since mom's first dishwaser in 1968 and am still alive, so can you say F _ _ _ it?

Won't give up the convenience (or de-greassing ability) of a DW on principle.
 
What Year is This Thing?

Is this a newer model? 'Cause I would just about bet the farm that my '96 KM Ultra Wash III portable has a short rinse immediately after the main wash, then the final rinse. But, it's been six months since I last ran her, and my 41-year old memory cant even remember where I put my car keys when I got into the house tonight.

Meanwhile, I am trying to grasp a good firm hold on the idea of you, a purveyor of appliances, *WILLINGLY* washing dishes by hand for any amount of time, small or large.

That just goes outside the natural order of things, ya know?
 
1) My KA is from 2002.

2) 6 months since last load?- LOL
I'd do a "rinse only" or "rinse and hold" once a week to keep the seals wet. {They don't need sardines, but do need water!)

3) Memory loss- Just spoke about this in the office today. Lost keys... that's OK. Forget what they are for? You might want to start worrying!

PS If you designate a top dresser drawer for your keys, wallet and watch(es), and never stray from it, that little issue will disappear. Same "policy" can be adopted when in hotels or visiting a friend for a few days. Really works well.

4)Doing dishes and other work by hand. Not generally fun if avoidable. But also not such a big deal based on some jobs i've had. Changed a few diapers in my day..and I dont have kids. Dishes are SO tame in comparison.

How does the saying go?

Between dishes, diapers and d@@ches, a girl's hands are always under water!

Once a Week...

Ewwww...

And I thought I was doing my baby a favor by firing her up only twice a year. Since I have not been able to even give her away, I may as well hang on for awhile. One more toy to play with is not going to spell the end of my little world. And, she makes such a great island in a kitchen that didnt previously have one.

Now about that key/spare change drawer: Works fine unless I also forget to put em in there!
 
They say all habits take about three to four weeks to establish and extinguish. But many have been "trained" by this one sand they seem to like it!

Since my genetic donors and I myself have very little short-term recall/memory I try to avoid the pitfalls. Here's on I was taught early on:

Doors and window should either be:
Opened and unlocked; or closed and locked.

It takes two seconds to ensure it is locked when closng it, just make that a norm in your head.

Electric cooking:
Safety rules.

Never store anyhing on top of the stove.

There should be something on the stove only when an element is actually on.

I get even nuttier- I turn on the light in the range hood whenever I am cooking. That way if I get distracted it acts as a reminder taht can be seen from a number of places in the home that the stove needs attention.

Don't laugh... there are times when the hair gets washed twice or not at all in the shower...I wash it every day. And there are days that I forget to shave which I normally do in the shower.

It gets better! Ever have one of those days where a sbiling says .."did I ever call you back", and neither of you has any idea? JOY!!!!!
 
I use Finish 3-in-1 Powerball tabs at the moment in my AEG dishwasher and you just can't beat them - I think these are sold as Electrasol in the US?

Steve - what exactly do you shave in the shower??? LOL LOL

has not been used as a filler in liquid dishwasher detergents for a LONG time now. It was used in the first generation of liquid detergents.

I never liked the liquid versions because, depending on the design of the detergent cups, often a lot of the detergent would get washed out of cup before the main wash.

Welcome to the 21st Century! I grew up without a dishwasher, so having one as an adult is a *necessary luxury*. You will never be without one again!

As far as dishwasher detergents.....I have never had a problem with any powdered dishwasher detergents. I recently bought some at Dollar General ($2.00 for a huge box). It's lemon-scented and seems to work very well in Bosch. I have never tried liquid or tablets. I think they are too expensive, and frankly, I think the liquid would start to *gunk* things up!

Do you have a rinsing agent dispenser? I have started using Cascade instead of Jet Dry. It is cheaper and the bottle is larger. Our water is full of mineral deposits so we go through lots of rinsing agent!

Good luck and glad to see you now have lots of *extra* time on your hands! ;-)

PS - Don't buy dishwasher products at Hilo Hatties! ;-)
 
I know its strange we went so long without a dishwasher. Our kitchen is really small, so I did not know how to fit one in. I have had many machines go through the shop, but all of them were built-in style, which would leave me with a carpentry problem. Portable dishwashers are pretty rare around here.

Once I got the machine home, I found that because our kitchen is so small, I could not get the machine close enough to the sink to hook it up to the faucet. So over the weekend, I converted it to a permanent freestanding installation. I now have a ton more counter space, now that I was able to banish the dish drainer. Martha says she is going to bring her dishes to my house!

Dennis picked up the walmart cheap kind of detergent and Cascade rinse aid.

We are both so happy to be free of the daily dish chore-it makes you wanna do the dishwasher dance!
