Ice maker questions please

I have no idea what brand refrigerator my brother is bringing me when he arrives for Thanksgiving. It was given to him by a friend that purchased a new one. He stated it get's hot on top because it's trying to make ice and not hooked up to water. Since this is going into the utility room as a second fridge, Im not interested in the ice maker, is a ice maker plug and play so to speak, do they just pull out, or is there wiring involved, since we dont know age or brand. What do you think? Thanks alr2903

Arthur, older fridges get warm on the outside of cabinets becuse they're going through a defrost cycle, my 1980 Kenmore used to get quite warm on top at times. It has nothing to do with the ice maker. Just keep the ice maker in the "off" position.

Any modular (non-GE basically) icemaker is interchangable, a handy and money saving bit of knowledge.

Older refrigerators get warm because they have heaters built into the cabinet to prevent moisture forming on the cabinet. Newer friges have an energy saver option that shuts off this warmer. Look at the control panel where you set the temps. As far as the icemaker, you can leave it in the off positon, or go ahead and run a water line to it, you never know when you need extra ice.

Also, some units, my deep freeze, though it may be different from a standard refrigerator. Anyway, it doesn't have an outside condensor. Instead it has the tubing routed to the outside cabinet which warms the cabinet, and the cabinet acts as the condensor.
