Well, thanks to Justin's pic of this plastic-top Kenmore available recently on Craigslist, I thought now would be a perfect time to show two similar looking washers, one direct drive and one belt-drive, so I can show everyone what we are referring to when we refer to the size of the lid. This is the best way to i.d. a BD or a DD when the panels look the same.

First, here is the DD washer that was recently posted. Notice the lid fills nearly all of the top. Also there are panel mounting screws on the outer corners of the control panel.

Here is the BD version

This is the BD version. These may have actually been available almost simultaneously, but the DDs took over for this model and models like it in 1982 - 1984.

Check out the lid. It is much less deep and slightly less wide.

The panel does not have the mounting screws on the outside edges either, as it is secured to the top from underneath and from the back instead.

So there you have it - short and sweet.

It's the angle Gordon's photo was shot...

I think it Gordon were to try and reproduce the same angle as in the first photo (a little higher and more of a down angle) you'd be able to see the difference easier.
