While cleaning the shower today with Lime Away (the water is very hard here) and after wiping it down, I thought I tossed the rag in the sink but it landed on my fairly new Carrera marble counter top. I didn't notice it for about 10 minutes. Now there is a giant blemish in the marble. I don't think there is anything that will take it out other than having the marble re-honed and who has the money for something like that. As much as I love the look of marble in the bath, I will never do that again. On its first week, I put my contact lens case on it and it left two perfect little circles etched in from the saline. As my mother always said, "we can't have anything nice"

When you spend money on upgrade options like that you also need to have the money to maintain it as well. We had out foyer done in marble and were well aware of how careful you have to be with it. But who would have thought that you could remove the shine from it simply by letting the dogs lay on it? We had it repolished once, two hundred bucks. Six months later we had the same problem. We knew that our dogs like to lay on it for the coolness factor, that's one of the reasons we had it installed.
But we did find somewhat of a fix. Go to your local Miele dealer and buy a bottle of Sofix. It's a product for natural stone that shines it up really well. I think it's an acrylic, but it's made for natural stone.

Sure is cheaper than having your counter repolished every year!

Jim,

Did you have a sealer put on the marble after it was installed?  This is something that needs to be done periodically with natural stone products.

Tim, I try to seal it every 3 months, and knowing how delicate it can I be I really try to be careful, I think that's why I'm so upset with myself.

Allen, The dogs fur take the shine off the marble, I would think the oils etc in their fur would make it shinier

One would think. It's not our short hair dogs that are the problem, it's our longer hair yellow lab/golden retriever mix that scuffs the surface. Brandy lays down on the floor in the same position all the time. Rear legs spread eagle on the floor.
After we had the floor about 6 months we turned the foyer light on and we noticed that the shine was gone in the exact same shape that Brandy is when she lays on the floor! It seems her longer hair acts like steel wool on the marble. We now use Sofix when this happens and have no further problems.
