I was talking to a friend of mine who lives in El Paso the other day. How the subject got diverted to washing machines, I don't know (he has a front loader but didn't tell me what brand). Apparently, with his daily walks, his clothes get a somewhat grungy odor to them.

I asked him what detergent he uses. He told me he uses FULL STRENGTH Lysol All Purpose cleaner for all of his laundry. I assumed he was using it as an additive, but he told me again, it was the only thing he used.

I then asked if it left a lingering scent from the product itself on the clothes. He told me no, but he does use lavender scented fabric softener and that's the only thing he can smell on them. He also said he'd used other detergents before, but they always seemed to leave a body odor smell behind. The Lysol All Purpose Cleaner gets rid of the germs and does a pretty decent job on getting the clothes clean.

Has anyone on here been daring enough to use Lysol in the same manner he does? I'm thinking of using it as an additive (especially on my work out clothes) and seeing what the result will be.

I also want to try the Wisk Deep Clean and see how it does on getting rid of odors.

I believe on the side of the Lysol bottle it states that it can also be used in your laundry too. I imagine it would be very harsh on the clothing over time leading to wear and fading of the clothing. Not to say anything about sudsing when water is added to the wash cycle.

I think his clothes smell grungy because they are not getting clean. I would think that the Lysol cleaner would be too sudsy for a FL so maybe he is not using enough. I wonder where he walks. It reminds me of an old joke:

Wife "I was down in the dumps today so I got myself a new hat."
Husband:"I was wondering where you had been finding some of those things."

HE NEEDS TO READ THE WARNING LABEL. Ton's of intresting information about the ineffective "detergent" he is using...

Keep out of reach of children. Hazards to humans and domestic animals. Causes moderate eye irritation. Avoid contact with eyes, skin or clothing. Wash thoroughly with soap and water after handling and before eating, drinking, chewing gum or using tobacco. If you have sensitive skin wear rubber gloves. First aid: In in eyes: Hold eye open and rinse slowly and gently for 15-20 minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present, after the first 5 minutes, then continue rinsing eye. Call a Poison Control Center or doctor for treatment advice. If on skin: Take off contaminated clothing. Rinse skin immediately with plenty of water for 15-20 minutes. Call a Poison Control Center or doctor for treatment advice. Questions? Comments or in case of an emergency, call toll free 1-800-228-4722. Have the product container or label with you when calling a Poison Control Center, or doctor, or going for treatment.

Seems like a dangerous, and harmful skin reaction waiting to happen...

I would think that he's using the all purpose cleaner version, hopefully not the brown bottle disinfectant! That would (and does) definitely leave an icky odor on the clothes, in addition to bleaching colors out. I would imagine the all purpose cleaner version (usually lemon scented) would work fine as a laundry detergent, it is a degreaser, and one of the main laundry soils is body oil. Would I use it? Probably not. There are plenty of purpose made laundry detergens available.
