I've spent most of the afternoon doing laundry after returning from a summer vacation trip. I just happened to glance at the Downey bottle and it said "Imported for Proctor & Gamble." I next checked the Tide box. It says, "Distributed by Proctor & Gamble." That suggests to me that what's in the box is produced by some company other than P&G. So what gives? Are laundry detergents and aids no longer made here in the United States?

LOOOL,I read the title and I thought that you bought imported clothes that were contaminated with AIDS and you were trying to wash them in order to disinfected.

Maybe Downy is manufactured in a manufacturing plant outside the USA, in Mexico or somewhere else, while Tide is 100% made in the US.

As far...

As I know, Downy in it’s “US form” is sold in US, Mexico, Canada and Asia. In all other markets, “Downy” carries a different brand name.

Is it possible that you have picked up a product that was meant to be sold in another market (sometimes discount stores pick up stuff meant for sale in other countries if there is an excess stock in the supply chain somewhere - see it a LOT here in the U.K.).

This can apply to any product.

As a side note, Detergent tends to be manufactured in the country/continent it is intended to be sold in, due to shipping weights and volume (especially liquids as they’re mostly water and no one is going to pay to ship that). So would be unusual if Tide wasn’t being manufactured anywhere in the US at all, especially considering how many units is sold.

haha! GRWasher_expert, you're too funny! I purchased the items at Walmart...so I don't know. I was surprised that the Tide box doesn't say "Made in the USA" or something to that effect. It struck me as odd that it simply said, "Distributed by Procctor & Gamble." I always thought that term meant that an item is made by one company and "distributed" under another company's label.
