Does anyone remember something from the late 60's/early 70's called Incredible Edibles or Creepy Crawlers? It was a toy--kind of like an Easy Bake oven. There were molds and bottles of liquid goo; you'd squirt the goo into the mold (usually a creepy insect or some such thing), then you'd slide the mold into the baking chamber. Afterward, when it was cool, you'd peel away your creepy, gummy worm-like treat from the mold and eat it. I think this product was made my Mattel.

I seem to recall you could even buy refill bottles of goo which made glow-in-the-dark creepies!

I can't imagine what sort of evil, carcinogenic chemicals lurked in the goo. I'm sure it would never pass muster, today!

It's all pretty hazy, but I think Incredible Edibles were the edible version of Creepy Crawlers.....I HOPE, at any rate!

I definitely remember us eating them, and not just on a dare. If I'm wrong, that would explain quite a bit about childhood gang! :)

Yep. Creepy Crawlers were made of vinyl and inedible. Of course, so was Play Doh, and we all know what happened with that! Anyone ever discover anything saltier than Play Doh?

The Creepy Crawler "raw material" was called Plasti-Goop. Mmmmm. Nothing smells like Plasti-Goop cooking in a Thingmaker. I had the Fright Factory set, myself. I also had a similar product by Topper called Johnny Toymaker. One used this set to make cars out of a plastic that cooked to a hard consistency. There were apparently molds available to make boats and bugs and stuff, but I never saw 'em.

Incredible Edibles. Never had the set, but the "raw material" for this was called Gobbeldy-Goop. I may have the spelling wrong. According to my various Christmas catalogs, the stuff was sugar free and approved by Parents Magazine. Can anyone recall was the cooker was called? It was round and had a lid and a monster-like (friendly) thing on it. The nose was the knob to open it up. I'll remember it as soon as I hear it. There was a similar set that made cakes called Kooky Kakes. Sort of like an Easy Bake oven for boys. You made the cakes and then attached plastic monster legs and arms to take the "girly" curse off the act of baking. This cooker was called the Makery Bakery.

Mattel was just too cute in the '60s.

Really fun toys like this would never stand a chance in today's climate. Can you imagine giving today's younger generation a toy that got blistering hot and probably gave off noxious fumes to boot?

Can you say "lawsuit"?

And yet we survived. Of course, those noxious fumes could explain a lot of things...;)

The grandson of a neighbor ...

had both Incredible Edibles and Creepy Crawlers. I spent the night at his house (they had a matching coopertone GE filter flow washer and dryer in the basement, but I digress), and played with both toys, on more then one occassion. We couldn't have been more then 9 or 10 at the time. There was NO adult supervision and yes they both got VERY hot. Creepy Crawlers gave off an oder that smelled not unlike burning plastic. You wouldn't want to eat them. Incredible Edibles gave off a sweet smell when it was cooking. I don't remember what they tasted like, but I'm thinking along the lines cinnamon candy.

I had forgotten all about them and now I'm even remembering that they had commercials for them. Thanks for trip down memory lane! :-)

I had the Creepy Crawlers,

but not the Incredible Edibles. I came across a Creepy Crawler snake just a few days ago.

I ate a few Incredible Edibles then, but was far from impressed with them.

No, these would never be marketed today!

(Why do I have a strange feeling that a bunch of us are in the 40-45 age cohort ;)

Consumer alert.......

Loved the Creepy Crawlers and Incredible Edibles! Frankly, couldn't tell the difference tastewise between the two. Damn, those things got hot! I put them right up there with the woodburner set I got one Christmas. OUCH! "Off with her fingerprints!"

I had one also-Christmas 1966

God what fun, actually getting to cook something on your own little stoveLOL! Creepy crawlers, not particulary tasty, but I sure enjoyed making them. Christmas 65', got my first chemistry set. Parents apparently trusted me and I was cautious with it. But the toys got old especially after I ran out of the goop. I can't remember playing with either toy for more than a year.

Mattel's Vacuform machine. I got that first. It had the heating plate on one side, and the mold/vacuum platform on the other side. You would heat up a square of special plastic, then quickly flip it over and pump like crazy to make a vacuum, thus forming your own little cars and things.

My parents then got me the Creepy Crawly set of plates/molds that fit the heating area. These same plates were used for the Incredible Edibles. As I recall the Edibles were just horrible. Sort of the like a gummy worm, but with a very off taste. Licorace comes to mind for one of the flavors and a cherry and an orange. We ate them, but I don't recall getting refills for the stuff.

And you're correct Lawrence, I just hit the magic half century mark this past April!

Mattel

I didn't ever have Creepy Crawlers or Incredible Edibles, but I DID have the Vac-U-Form and the Power Shop.

If it's Mattel, it's SWELL!

I had both the Creepy Crawlers and Vac-u-form toys, but my parents drew the line at Incredible Edibles. Those things got incredibly hot and I burned myself way too many times not only on the heating plates themselves, but on the Creepy Crawler metal mold - it ended up being basically a frying pan. And that little plastic dish of water really didn't cool anything down.

But all this talk of toys has jogged my memory - I remember a discussion about Mr. Machine - what fun that was and I think I still have it in the attic along with my "Big Job" motorized dump truck, Spirograph, Flintstone Village and Mattel talking puppets......

angus thats true: the little plastic pan,

was a joke the water got very hot, I had the creople people, that made heads and arms and feet you put them on pencils to make stick men. the "goo" in the bottle if spilled would eat holes in the styrofoam packing box the set came in. my friend had the creepy crawlers set the centipede looking things and worms. I hadnt thought of this in years :-) alr2903.
