I voted for Obama and would do it again considering the opposition. However, my initial happiness of doing so was quickly dashed just before the election when Obama gave the Proposition 8 crowd that nasty little sound bite "I believe marriage is between a man and a woman." At the same time he came out against Prop. 8, so who knows what his view on same-sex marriage really is - evidently he doesn't, or he's keeping it a secret. He has promised to address "Don't ask don't tell", though we've had no action on that while the military continues to dismiss gay personnel.

Given the economic mess we're in, gay rights shouldn't be the number one priority of the Democrats. I do however expect some clear and concise thinking on the matter rather than the mish-mash of platitudes and half-promises we've received so far. Apparently I'm not the only one to feel this way:

They give you what they want you to hear before the election, then do what they want afterword. Dems and Repubs alike.

Which is why

We have to keep pushing for our rights!

The Democratic machine knows full well that America is completely polarized.

The single issue voters have already made their choice and will cast their vote for which ever party supports their one and only issue:

Guns
Abortion
Gays

Many of the independents will either swing back and forth, choosing to love the person, not the party.

The rest are either those who vociferously scream "I am NOT a Republican, I am a Conservative (or a liberal)" but would rather die than vote anything but Republican.

And those, like me, who are yellow dog Democrats and couldn't imagine voting for a Republican...unless maybe the alternative was a Nazi. Oh, right, Palin already gave us that option.

So, yeah, basically - what are we going to do? Obama knows full well that (except for a vanishingly small number of gay Republicans) we can't leave him. Yes, very Brokeback.

The only chance we have is to keep up the financial threat: Grant us human status or we will not support you with our money. We will give it to those candidates who stand for us.

Ultimately, it's about making the case to the straights that if our rights can be taken away (and they were, we are now sub-human in California) then theirs can be, too. That is where we really have a chance to bring in the Latino/a, Hispanic and Negro voting block...make clear to them that their civil rights are now up for disposition.

The christianists are monsters who nearly destroyed the US Constitution under shrub. They were able to do so because the vast majority of people were willing to sit there quietly and believe the lies they were told. Right now, we have the first opening we have had in decades - and probably will have for some time again. We have to use it.
