Someone here might have heard of this before but, it's new to me! So they say when fridges ran on Sodium Dioxide people use to keep canaries in their kitchen. If they woke up in the morning and came into the kitchen and the bird was dead the fridge had a leak! True or False? Seems like there could have been a better method!

The refrigerant was Sulphur Dioxide-and it was toxic.Goes under the designation of R-764. It is a group two refrigerant(UL lab rating for toxicity)R-764 was used in older household fridges.Other very dangerous refrigerants-Listed them for those folks that work with older equipment-R-717:Ammonia,R-113:Dichloroethylene,R-160:Ethyl Chloride,R-40:Methyl chloride,R-611:Methyl Formate. Some of these can be flammable as well. These designation are the National Refrigeration Safety Code-National Board of Fire Underwriters. Some Ice cream makers still use compressers that have R717-Ammonia-because of its low temp capability-and can reach it quickly.
